It just makes me sick if it's true about zeppelin
I know they ripped off Nina Simone with her royalties.

Dave admitted he "Stole" a lot of things, he put a new spin on those things though, MUCH like Led Zeppelin..

It's been known FOR YEARS that Zeppelin has ripped off old Blues artists...and it really hasn't affected their fans or music very much..

LstLkly2Succeed
06-30-2007, 06:27 PM
I gotta agree with Unchainme. It's not so much plagiarism as being inspired by the blues, and this certainly doesn't make me love them any less.

Mr Badguy
06-30-2007, 06:30 PM
Didn`t they have to pay Willie Dixon and Chester "Howlin` Wolf" Burnett a shit load of money and recredit their songs on the LPs and CDs?

LstLkly2Succeed

Isn't that what law suits are for though? I mean I don't think it's quite fair to discredit Zeppelin completely, they put a new twist on the music. I'm sure the blues artists they took from got lots of money in settlements.

you didn't listen to the clips.

This has zero to do with being inspired by the blues.
ALL of hard rock is inspired by the blues.
Here you have cut after cut after cut not just influenced but blatantly stolen from original artists some who left the business, who never got acknowleged or credited in any way.

The exception is Eddie Cochran's Nervous Breakdown, which can only be an influence since you can't copyright a title, and the chord blocking has zero to do with Cochran's Nervous Breakdown.
Stairway IS from a Spirit song, there is absolutely no denying.

Of course it doesn't detract from the groups chemistry, but that's not the issue.

LstLkly2Succeed
06-30-2007, 08:32 PM
To be honest I couldn't get the clip to work, so no, I didn't listen to it. But I mean, it's not like it wasn't Robert Plant singing, or Jimmy Page not playing the guitar. I understand that it was stolen, but doesn't this still count as inspiring them, I mean they liked it so much that they copied it and probably made it better. If it was a copyright infringement then the originial artists have the right to take them to court and probably did and got a big settlement (wikipedia says thats true but I'm not one to trust it.)

Blasphemy!!! Bite your fucking tongue. Zeppelin rules!!! Howard and Robin are a couple of douchebags. Where have you been for the last 30 years. Most true Zep fans have known this all along. We are talkin mostly about the 1st album. Then bits and pieces along the way. This band sold like 300,000,000 albums. Yes 300 million.

MUSICIAN: I understand "Dazed and Confused" was originally a song by Jake Holmes. Is that true?
PAGE: [Sourly] I don't know. I don't know. [Inhaling] I don't know about all that.
MUSICIAN: Do you remember the process of writing that song?
PAGE: Well, I did that with the Yardbirds originally.... The Yardbirds were such a good band for a guitarist to play in that I came up with a lot of riffs and ideas out of that, and I employed quite a lot of those in the early Zeppelin stuff.
MUSICIAN: But Jake Holmes, a successful jingle writer in New York, claims on his 1967 record that he wrote the original song.
PAGE: Hmm. Well, I don't know. I don't know about that. I'd rather not get into it because I don't know all the circumstances. What's he got, The riff or whatever? Because Robert wrote some of the lyrics for that on the album. But he was only listening to...we extended it from the one that we were playing with the Yardbirds.
MUSICIAN: Did you bring it into the Yardbirds?
PAGE: No, I think we played it 'round a sort of melody line or something that Keith [Relf] had. So I don't know. I haven't heard Jake Holmes so I don't know what it's all about anyway. Usually my riffs are pretty damn original [laughs] What can I say?

To ripp songs for your "first" album is criminal.Rippin in general too.
You can be inspired by some guitar sound and buy the same effect pedal but ya don't go stealin melodies, riffs and lyrics.
According to this guy on Howard Stern they stole 9 outta ten songs on that album or something like that.
He has a strong case with the backup clips.

I get emails of people saying thank you for giving me your music to sell in 3rd world countries for a profit.
LOL
Swear to god.
Just remember..you're not a musician..you're a pimp.
I dunno..

I'm gonna watch duran duran in London at the Diana concert.
I bet they didn't ripp anybody off..they did a tribute album of cover songs of their inspirations...Sly Stone,Bowie,Lou Reed,Grand master flash..
Now thats cool and respectfull.

So go down the crossroads and thank Robert Johnson for
Stairway to Heaven !!

I never really got into the real bluesy side of Zep..

Fook, most of the Beatles first hits were other peoples.
But thank the lord they played em and became the
greatest writing machine ever..

Over the Hills and Far away, Stairway,
Immigrant Song, Going to California,
Livin Lovin, Kashmir, Black Dog are like
the Quintessential Zep to me..

Show me the old black bluesman that wrote those
tunes and you really will be proving a point..

In fact were any of the alleged "borrowed tunes"
ever one of their big hits ??

Of course, they only nicked the lyrics for that one.

Whole lotta love riff doesnt surprise me that
its been done before..

But seriously, the Led Zep songs I dig, are not
stolen. I probably ignore 3/4 of their catalog.
I never really got into the blues side.

Led Zep (When in Hard Rock Mode), Priest and
Sabbath.. They created Metal..

I know a lot of dudes get into the bluesy stuff
they did, but I never did..

I could lengthen that list of faves by the way
and Im betting none of those tunes are borrowed..

Point being, if they did "borrow" they also "created"
some great original material..

Might be a coincidence that I only get into the original
stuff instead of the rehashed blues numbers ?

Besides,

No blues tunes sound that original to me anymore....

I listened to Led Zeppelin when I was a youngblood...an' I got into the blues because I heard Percy Plant singin' all 'em ol' blues...

Bluesman are just as guilty of 'rippin'!! Mos' of the ol' blues was 'ripped' from ancient spirituals. And bluesmen steal all the time...dey all sing 'em ol' same tunes...and credit the writer as 'traditional'...

I dig researchin' Zep...this makes me even a bigger fan of 'em...
