You know, I have the seen the clip of him showing that game to Letterman before but I've never seen the performance before. That was a great job of "Tell The Truth" live even if it was a bit subdued for the studio atmosphere. It's also the only time I've seen that song done other than the video.

Great Job my man.....

Awesome! I let someone borrow a VHS I had of this about 10 years ago and they TAPED OVER IT while trying to copy it for themselves! Glad to see it again...one of my favorite appearances, especially since there were so few around the time...

That was awesome !!!

It's hard to believe the difference of 1991 Dave to 1998 Dave when I first saw him in what had seemed like forever opening for Bad Company ... :(

I wish he had stayed loyal to himself, (and his true Fans), and stuck with his own material for the "Live" shows ...

There was alot of depth and soul to Dave's solo output that is so overlooked and ignored, it just pisses me off !!!

Great video, Thanks for posting it !!!

Who was that lead guitar player? I know Becker played on that album, but that didn't look like Becker.

I believe that's Joe Holmes. Ex guitar player for Lizzy Borden & Ozzy

Thanks for finding the vid. It's always great to see rare stuff.

"Tell the truth" was a bad choice for an ALAE extract though IMO. It is no reflection of the album, which is a blast.
If Dave was supposed to present ALAE, well, on the Letterman Show... people must have thought: "Well, DLR has taken an odd path here. Where are the big guitars and his huge 'whOAWs'?"
When I play ALAE, which is my fave solo album, I always skip to "Baby's on fire". Sorry.

Pick another song on the album that would've translated on the show......

That was fantastic!! I must have missed it 15+ years ago. Back in the day it might have pissed me off to hear Tell The Truth instead of something else off the album, but today...it's one of my favorites. I love it when Dave puts on his bluesy, soulsy hat. It's a great fit.

DLR even got extended time in the chair and bumped someone. Only with a CVH reunion could that happen again. Hmmm.....

I wonder why Dave changed his style between shooting the Lil AInt Enough Video and the tour? If you notice in the video he is sporting the super long and thick hair extensions and still quite "Diamond Dave" attire. Then he cuts his hair, wear a pony tail and tones down the "Diamond Dave" persona. I wonder if this hurt the album sales?

The thing to me is, was it ever a matter of adapting to the places he's been, or the latter to put up or shut up? I mean, Dave is no bully, but he never really was the one who'd compomise, was he?
Inviting DLR to a show means you know who the fuck you ask to come and play a song, how it will be sung, with what kind of band it will be played - hell! Letterman knew he hadn't asked for Paul Anka, didn't he?
As a fan, I would have bought the album just by watching and listening to this song, but I doubt non die-hard ones did.
It just amazes me how Dave took the prerogatives of the production into account. I imagine the "average" TV viewer who knows about DLR: "Mmmwell. So Diamond Dave's into this now? OK."
Whatever the show is "about", artists should do their thing when they're asked to join in, shouldn't they?

Excellent...hadn't seen that in long long time. Dave sounded mint, IMO.

But, that joke??? WTF??

I think he did a little bump of ketamine during the commercial break. :D

tell the truth is my favorite song off of ALAE. Dave should make a strictly blues album.

i guess the thing that hurt the sales of the album (and the following albums) was that steve vai had left. from then on dave's career went down slowly unfortunately. of cos i was still buying his stuff, but must say that the "diamond dave" cd was not necessary. hope the future brings somethin better!

Dave never cut his hair short for the 1991/1992 tour, i`ve got a tour programme from the uk leg of the tour, and his hair is very long. He cut his hair short in 93 because it was so thin on top, it would look silly long down the back and sides.

I wish I had been a Dave fan back in the day when he still pushed new material. I'd love to go to a past Dave show when it was more 50/50 between solo and CVH. So many great tunes like this one will never see the light of day again. Unfortunately, only true Dave fans appreciate stuff like this and would want to hear it live. Further, I'll never understand Dave's greatest hits CD. It left this out and Damn Good in favor of Lands Edge?

If the van halen reunion goes ahead maybe it will revive interest in his solo material. There should be dvd releases of Dave`s music videos and early concerts. The stage production of the skyscraper tour looked amazing. These concerts are a text book for any up and coming rock star!

right said, bro! and if there wont be any new CVH recordings, i hope dave will rock like on DLR BAND, and not do another "diamond dave"-like CD!

Do you guys think Dave`s hair looks better now, or back then?

dlrevh00
07-25-2007, 08:00 PM
Dave did cut his hair alot. Watch the video for A lil aint enough, then watch the letterman 1991. Im not sure if Dave cut his hair or just removed the extensions. But he changed his whole persona mid tour. I also like the way he has hair now with the short extensions on top. Makes him look alot younger than the do he sported in 02

I think the reason Dave changed his image half way through 91, was because it was the year of grunge. The rock star died. It was the year Nirvana stormed in and decided to change it all. They were against the flash clothes , long hair , and party image. So Dave decided not to dress and act like a 1980`s "big ego" rock star. So for that period 91-95, he probably tried to act more humble!

gunnyhighway
07-27-2007, 03:18 AM
for real! but around '99 he acted again as an 80's rock star (incl. long hair - or at least what was left of it). unfortunately this interested only his true fans and he hardly won a new audience. if VH gets back, this would raise a new interest in the band and its members. let's hope it will happen...

I hope that it does revive interest in his solo material, especially in the UK. Then we might get to see him over here again...

yo! i imo a dlr show should include 50% solo stuff at least, as a dude in this forum already sed

07-27-2007, 01:27 PM
Yeah, again Dave want back to his 1980`s surfer dude image between 1999 and 2003,as the 1980`s retro explosion happened, If Dave had dressed and had the cool hair cut he has now, he would have won over new fans over that period. In hindsight Dave should have re worked the tracks From the 2000 van halen sesssions, for his own solo album, after they reunited with Hagar

I think Dave`s carreer turned into a mess from 1999. He recorded the highly rated DLR Band album, which was released on his own independent label, and he was also set to release another album in 1999 with the Same Van halen Style band when, Ed is forced by warner Brothers to make an album with Dave or look for another label. So the songs he wrote for his new solo album were probably used in the 2000 Van Halen sessions!
