Anyone ever see John Wayne portraying "Genghis Kahn"???

    I mean, Come ON!!

I have seen this only once or twice in my life on cable. Never found it interesting enough to want to watch it more than just a few minutes.

But talk about a ridiculous idea!

Who cast Duke in such a film?

And why did John Wayne (American Hero) agree to do something so idiotic?

Not only that, but as always seems to happen in Modern Life, there is a bizarre twist to the production of this film:

    "Synopsis
In the historical epic The Conqueror, John Wayne stars as Temujin, better known as Genghis Khan. Red-haired Susan Hayward costars as Bortai, the Tartar princess whom Temujin claims as the spoils of battle. Eventually, Bortai's hatred for her captor metamorphoses into love, while Temujin's hordes lay claim to the entire Gobi Desert. Director Dick Powell, many of the actors (John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendariz, Thomas Gomez, Agnes Moorehead), and several of the crew members later fell victim to cancer, allegedly the result of producer Howard Hughes' decision to lens the film on location near the atomic testing grounds in the Utah desert."

Talk about a strange piece of work....

For "The Conqueror", John Wayne deserves a little bashing!

I read one time that the filming location of this flop was nearby a nuclear test site in Nevada.

Yeah! The shoot location is located near a city that has just as many health related issues as the actors and crew. One of the local families started a chart of the people in the town who became ill. One entire neighborhood was afflicted with some form of cancer and there were practically no survivors of that neighborhood. The only one still around when they shot a documentary about the test site was at the time very ill herself. It was her mom who started taking note of the impossible number of neighbors all coming down with cancer. She passed away shortly afterwords. Back then (I believe late 40's early 50's) they were assured by the U.S. gov that the town was completely safe as they wer far enough away from the actual test site that any radiation they received would be less than they receive from the sun while walking their dog on a summer day. What they rarely bothered to mention was how that could change with the direction of the wind and it did. ALOT!
I could be wrong about the era. The name of the doc and the town escape me. I only watched it one time a few years ago.
