I just blew my Peavey Windsor

These are wierd British flavored Chinese made amps Peavey sells. They can be had under $500 and have 100 watts of EL-34 power. The preamp has both a high gain and low gain input and they kind of sound like a tricked out JCM 800 with their own mojo going.

Anyways the amp sounds pretty good with my SG and just for fun I dimed the master volume and the amp is blazing through a 5150 4x12 and I dial the texture control from class A to class B and then pop and no sound. I turn the knob back to class A and it works but not in class B.

Damn. I was afraid I blew the transformer.

I open the amp up and on the circuit boards are sevral small fuses. One fuse was blown. I replaced it and the amp works again.

Apparently these amps don't like the texture control to be fiddled with while going full out. They blow the fuse but Peavey on such a cheap amp didn't have to spend the money for the extra fuse holders on the boards but they did. It was a matter of pulling the chassis out and replacing a small fuse to get back into business, so these amps are pretty reliable. No problems since.

Older Made In USA Peavey gear, especially amps and speakers are top notch and very reliable and servicable by an average joe musician with basic soldering ability...

Some of the guitars and especially basses are nice as well...

I don't care if a Made in China Peavey Windsor sounds good or not, I wouldn't buy it...

At one time Peavey boasted how they would always be made in USA...

Well, they lost this customer for life...

Hartley Peavey had the right idea. Make a quality, reliable, affordable, easy-to-maintain amp for the working stiff.

But you get what you pay for.

I only heard one Sleavey in my life that sounded decent. It was a single 12" combo amp, and a friend played through it in the 80s.

Aside from that, Sleavey was there when nothing else was available.

But in my case, something else was always available.


As for Crate, I have a 65-watt 1 X 12 combo amp.

It is a transistor amp that I bought for $150 in 1986.

Playing live, even when cranked up full, it can not be heard very well over other instruments, drums, etc.

But as a recording amp, it has the perfect sound without the fire-breathing sound of tubes. Meaning the tone and distortion are just right.

Kinda strange.

So I use it to record with occasionally, as something different to use than my Marshall halfstack or my tube preamp.

Really, Crate is not that bad.

Never owned a Crate tube amp though.

Yup. They could have done fine selling the middle of the market like they always did. I actually took the amp out of the box and shot the box up with a 12 guage just for the hell of it. I hate how the fuckers look. I just put a metal plate on the bottom and have it out in the open like a high end stereo amp. LOL! If it blows again I sledge hammer the Chink fucker. LOL!
