Darkness recruit veteran producer

The Darkness have recruited veteran rock producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange for the follow-up to Permission to Land.

Lange's credits include AC/DC's Highway To Hell and For Those About To Rock We Salute You, as well as albums for Bryan Adams, Def Leppard and Foreigner.

More recently, he's also worked with everyone from Britney Spears to the Backstreet Boys, reports XFM.co.uk.

Meanwhile, Avril Lavigne says she's desperate to work with The Darkness.

"The Darkness are incredible," she said. "Their power is breathtaking and they are the one band in the world I now want to record with. I just can't stop singing their songs."

Metal Sludge says:

JBN: The good thing about Mutt Lange working with The Darkness is that it means we won't have to hear from The Darkness until 2009, since it takes Mutt years to produce a CD. Hey Mutt, take your time! If Def Leppard needed 4 years in between albums, then The Darkness needs at least 8 years!

OS: Avril giving praise to The Darkness says everything I need to say.

What would happen to Mutt if Bon Scott was still in AC/DC? He'd probably get tired to recording for several months, then smash Mutt upside the head with a bottle of scotch.

The 2 ways you can always tell a "Mutt Lang" produced recording:

1. The song starts out with just guitar and drums during the verse and then the bass and another guitar kicks in right at the hook / chorus.

2. The chorus is preluded with "whoas."

Jeez, I bet Mutt thought that Joe Elliot was the worst singer he`d ever work with.

Lange`s production always sounds very 80`s.

Echoey drums, reverb guitars, massive background vocals.

People always go on about bands that should retire.

What about record producers?

Isn't that what the Darkness would want though?

I don't care how many albums he sold. You know that AC/DC and Def Leppard turned to shit afterwards. Yeah sure he'll help you sell millions on one album, but then afterwards other albums don't match up and you start to suck. Kind of like forming a Cocaine habit.

Just like Bob Rock.

Look what he did to Metallica, Motley Crue, The Cult etc.

I'm ecstatic! The Darkness is probably the best NEW band out there. I hope all goes well. I will definitely be buying the CD, regardless of what I hear.

Permission to Land IS a great album. I think its one of the best rock albums that has come out during the last 5+ years. The vocals reminds me of a cross between old Rush (when Geddy Lee would sing a lot higher) and Queen. And i love hard rock. Rush, Van Halen, DLR, Ozzy, Megadeth, GNR, etc. If you like that type of music, go listen to that CD. I can't wait to hear the follow-up.

When I hear the name Mutt Lange, I think of spending several years in the studio. Sorry, but 2 weeks is the max for me!
