The result would probably be different if the experiement took place in a trailer court instead of Yale. Why? The subconciouse of the people being tested is going "Wow! We are at fucking Yale and this PHD is taking intrest in us."

It's the "You are part of something big!" mentality. The percieved prestiege and wealth creates the authority the monkeys want to obey.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

With all due respect to you Nick, that was stupid. I normally like to read your post, but this was very amateurish. This was something I would have posted, not someone sensible like you. Don’t ever give me crap again about watching my “Creation Propaganda Videos” because this was propaganda at its finest. “How Good People Become Evil” you ask? Choices! From the time you “choose” to wake up, until the time you “choose” go to bed and everything in between is a choice. It’s not all black and white in my world, there are exceptions to the rule, I guess. Let me explain. I chose to drop out of school very early, I chose to look at porn and I chose to smoke pot after 5th grade. But, but, my hippie mom kinda helped me along by buying us bongs and putting us into situations that most people would have failed. From 1979 until Thanksgiving of 1993 I chose to be the most sick and evil person you would ever have met. I’ve done things that I’m ashamed to say and I’m crying right now just thinking of them. But thank God, THANK YOU GOD, that I chose to turn my life around. With the help of you know who, of course. And I don’t care how stupid that sounds to people. While I chose to smoke dope, listened to CVH and drop out of school. My wife chose not to smoke dope, she went to college got an education and she listened to Air Supply. My wife’s families are crazy and half of them are in prison too. And she grew up in San Antonio’s worst housing project, but she chose not to succumb to peer-pressure. Okay, that’s enough. I just realized that I’m starting to rant like Katydid. I’m not trying to start a fight with you again, I was just expecting better from you. Thank You for being my Psychologist.

          I think I've struck a nerve...

But I'm wondering what your specific criticisms are of the videos.

You don't believe that good people can do bad things in certain circumstances?

No, you didn’t. I was in a good mood after drinking my nightly glass of Ernest & Julio Gallo’s finest and I felt like talking. I feel sometimes it’s better to talk to a complete stranger than someone close to you. My wife found me when I was homeless and sleeping in my car. She knows SOME of the crazy crap I did, but most things I’ll take to the grave. In the meantime, I’ll pray for the best.

But I'm wondering what your specific criticisms are of the videos.

The first video was OK. The second video was just flat out stupid. The part when the narrator said they wore mirrored glasses so you can’t see their eyes was especially dumb. My main criticism of the second video is that it wasn’t a REAL situation. They were just role playing actors. When we watch a scary movie and the killer is running after the victim and the victim keeps falling down and we always say, man if that was I, I would grab a stick and beat that killer up with it. The fact is, you don’t know until you are in that situation.

You don't believe that good people can do bad things in certain circumstances?

Of course I do. I was a good sports playing kid until I started smoking dope and looking at porn mags. For the next 14 years I danced with the devil. I believe all kids are good, but the things they learn from society screws them up. That’s why I’m such a staunch social conservative. Where I break away from most conservatives is that I’m a fiscal liberal/moderate.

If smoking dope keeps you away from Air Supply, pass the bong over this way! Better do it fast.... I haven't smoked any in about 7 years. I'll be singing "I'm all Out of Love" at a karaoke bar before too long!

I think both videos were dumb, the second one more so.

If I was put in that situation I would not continue to shock a person that was begging for mercy. If the person being shocked said it was ok and I could see him and read his facial expressions to see if he was being forced to do it or not then yah I would do it.

But I think the people in that first video were just morons. Anyone who is not sadistic or evil at heart already could not continue to shock someone when they are begging for mercy if they had any choice in the matter.

That psychology experiment is worthless. How do you know that the people selected to do the shocking weren't evil to begin with?
-We have enough youth. How about a fountain of "Smart"?

-If you can read this, thank a teacher....and since it's in English, thank a soldier.

HA HA FORD. I was trying to make a point with that line FORD. Are you gonna put that in your sig too? Since I’m horrible at putting my thoughts on paper, you guys probably didn’t get it. One thing I do know is that “I’m all Out of Love” is a better song to listen to when you turn out the the lights than “Runnin’ With the Devil.”

Why am I not surprised that the right wingers here never even heard of the Milgram experiments before?

Did any of you people even graduate high-school??

This is Psychology 101 here. Or was that Sociology 101. Hell, probably talked about it in both classes, actually.

Here's a clue for the clueless....

EVIL really isn't the point here.

Blind, sheepish submission to an authority figure is.
