Detroit: Well worth the price of admission!

Just got back home from the Detroit show, and what a show! The setlist was excellent, the band sounded fantastic and the show brought back some memories and made some new ones. Being a guitar player I was a little disappointed in Eddie's solo. I could see he was struggling to make some magic moments but his guitar just didn't seem to want to play along. The whole thing felt like he didn't quite have as much control over the guitar as he usually does but the crowd didn't seem to mind. Cathedral seemed weak, like he wasn't getting enough volume out of each note. But he made up for that with his solid playing on all the songs and some cool call and response riffing with Dave. The crowd seemed to be pretty "up" throughout the show with plenty of crowd participation singing along with several tunes. There were some cool song choices like Little Guitars and I'll Wait sounded great even if the keyboard sounded a bit cheesy. The 1984 synth intro sounded great because it was the actual synth track stripped from the original recording. Love that fat Oberheim sound! Dave's voice sounded very strong. He dropped a couple lines here and there but it was usually during the choruses where Ed and Wolfie were singing so the lines weren't missed that much. Speaking of Wolfie, he threatened to steal the show many times. His backup vocals along with Ed's were excellent. I didn't hear anything off key. The thing I noticed the most was that the crowd really seemed to get behind him whenever he did anything to stand out a bit. Despite earlier reports that he looked stiff I thought he looked pretty confident, strutting around the stage casually, hamming it up now and then with Dave or Ed, and walking out onto the front walkway to low-5 with the fans, and there were a lot of hands reaching up to touch him. Funniest thing was to see 3 young girls at the front of the stage standing right in front of him and staring at him the whole show. And he knows how to play! He was doing some pretty cool tapping and funky octave bass work in a few tunes. The kid did all right, the band sounded great, it was well worth the ticket price and the 4 hour round trip!

Seems like the guys are getting it right every night on this tour. Fuck the negativity that spews from a certain few. Sam and Mike will be at a tavern near them soon. So what if a solo ain't perfect, who fucking cares that at age 53 Dave is not running around like a wild man anymore, Ed isn't wireless, Wolf isn't quite Mike on stage, Alex's solo is a great time for a piss. Fuck everybody who wants to rain on our Van Halen Parade across the country. Detroit, I know the first show was great and I hope the second is even better.

Heh, sorry gorndog I didn't mean to sound like I was peeing on the parade, hell I was cheering the guys on just as much as anyone and I was just happy to see them perform again! I'm a big EVH fan so I'm going to be a bit more critical of Ed than some, but like Matt said it wasn't a big downer. He played so well the rest of the night it didn't really matter. Oh and BTW, I forgot to mention Dave's stage activity. I don't know if this is true but on the way out of the building I heard someone say that "we got no less than 18 spin-kicks from Diamond Dave! Can't ask for more than that!" Well, I don't know if it was *that* many but to those who thought he wasn't moving around as much I counted at least a dozen solid spin-kicks. He also did a bit of his martial arts moves here and there and he did a nice bit of baton spinning near the end. Made me wonder what would happen if he lost control and the thing flew off into the crowd. But that's our Dave, the ultimate showman! Speaking of which, I really liked the bit where he played his acoustic under the street light before going into Ice Cream Man. If I didn't know it already I knew it right then, Dave is back

Dr Raven, I am sorry my friend. My anger and frustration isn't directed at you, but at at these people who can't get over the fact it's not 1984 anymore. When Michael Jordan came back to basketball from his short lived baseball career, he wasn't the same player he once was. Mike didn't jump over everyone anymore, he didn't take it to the basket like he did pre baseball. He used his jump shot more etc... you get my point I'm sure... Van Halen, kinda the same thing. 3/4 of the band is now 23 years older, I think they are using the jump shot now more than driving to the basket. But you know something? Jordan and his Bulls won 3 more championships with him doing it that way. Dave and Van Halen in my mind are the champs again at what they do.
