Woman Dead, Child Injured In Sledgehammer Attack

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. -- Police have charged a teen boy in a sledgehammer attack that left his sister dead and a child injured.
Deputies on Monday were investigating a possible child abuse case at a home in the 8200 block of Brock Road. They were trying to figure out how a 2-year-old girl suffered a fractured nose and skull. The girl's mother took her to a hospital after discovering she was bleeding, News4's Pat Collins reported.
A detective was searching the home when he found a padlock on a bedroom door. A hammer was used to break the lock. Upon entering, the detective found 22-year-old Betsy Mary Smith dead on the floor.

Smith, who lived at the home, had been stabbed and beaten with a sledgehammer.
Police said Smith's 16-year-old brother told a detective that he went into the bedroom to kill his sister and beat her with a sledgehammer. Police said the teen then hit the 2-year-old with the sledgehammer because she was crying. He then killed his sister, police said.
Police said the teen then raped his sister, left her on the bedroom floor and locked the door with the 2-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy inside. Sheriff Howard Smith said the victim was baby-sitting the children, who were her cousins.
Collins reported that the suspect let the children out of the locked room about 12 hours later after they started crying again, which is when her mother noticed she was bleeding. The 1-year-old was not injured.
The teen was charged with first-degree murder, rape and malicious wounding. He's being held in the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center.


My initial thought would be to drop this 16 year old in an adult prison and forget about him until he shows up dead one day.

WTF would drive a kid to such an evil act: Drugs, his depression, abusive upbringing?

I don't know about that. It is satanic, and evil, but society as a whole is just as evil as ever. There have been homocides and serial killers throughout history. Barabus, the man set free by the jews in order to kill jesus, was a killer. Argueably the most famous serial killer ever, who is a sick sob, jack the ripper, was around over 100 years ago.

Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely says Virginia law will eventually require the 16-year-old to face charges as an adult because of the seriousness of the offenses.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff Howard Smith says that the teenager confessed, telling the detectives, "I’m the one who killed my sister."

Mary and Walter Smith’s son is charged with 1st degree murder, rape and aggravated wounding...

Mary Smith showed reporters a picture of her murdered child and said, "She was a good daughter."

All that you’ve mentioned and a lot more other stuff. We are now living in an “all about me” society. I’ve only been to one movie in the last 2 years and that movie was The Transformers. And I wished I didn’t take my 7 year old to see that crap. Leave it to Hollyweird to screw up a cool Cartoon and put an unnecessary scene in it. This kid should have been on meds.

He probably displayed all kinds of warning signs that the parents ignored. Its easier (and cheaper) to turn your head and pretend you "didn't see that" than it is to get on the phone and make an appointment for your kid to see a professional. Especially if you have the guilt associated with possibly being the cause of the childs problems. Whether you were the abuser or the one enabling the abuser. Most kids like this have one parent who abuses while the other allows it to happen.

Definately needs to be investigated, I am guessing that the kid isn't the only one who should be in jail. Seriously, who the fuck talks to the press after one of their kids rapes and kills the other?? Some fucked up mind set right there...
