View Full Version : "Unleashed in the East" VS "Priest...Live!"

One the cornerstone of live Heavy Metal, the other largely forgotten.

There`s no point having a poll as "Unleashed..." would win hands down.

However, how did Priest blow it in `87 with their second live album?

Okay, so the tracklist is heavily stacked with "Turbo" material but there is still a shitload of 80`s Priest classics.

Also, "Unleashed..." gets a lot of heat for having overdubs but "...Live!" is full of obvious overdubs, backing vocals and lead fills, which if you watch the accompanying video stand out like a sore thumb.

Eh?

The gee-tar tones on Live are weak.

Just about everything on LIVE is weak. From the ridiculously ugly brown ( I imagine they wanted it to be gold) album cover, to the lousy song selection, to the overproduction. That was not a good period for the mighty Priest.

"Unleashed in the East" is hands down the better album. And the majority of the overdubs, I'm led to believe, were on Rob's vocals cos he had a cold when the shows were recorded.

"Priest...Live", although I actually do like the "Turbo" album even though it hasn't aged as well as other Priest albums, is just too...80s? It sounds very dated. The guitars sound weak...the audience sound annoying and the overdubs are too obvious.

They shouldn't have released it. A "Painkiller" live album would have been much more enjoyable.

They were talking about overdubs on the 1986 album.

But yes, Rob recorded all of his lead vocals for Unleashed on a patio at a studio in London. He spoke about it years ago online.

If you listen to the track "Starbreaker" from that same performance in Japan, you can hear him introduce the song, and he basically does not so much introduce the song as croak an introduction. He had a severe case of the flu on that Japanese tour.

Of course when they released the remastered UITE they could have erased his intro. But the songs were released on vinyl as b-sides of singles back in the late 70s - early 80s.

The only thing I dig about the 1986 show was that they played material that had not come out when UITE was released.

That said, after Defenders Of The Faith came out, Glenn and Ken made their guitars sound like over-processed pieces of fucking shit.

The ultimate live official release by them is the 1982 Memphis show on DVD.

Halford wailed, they played nothing from fucking Turbo, and the guitars sounded great.

I really don't care for Priest..Live, largely because of the song selection.

The only thing worse than listening to it is watching the Video where they look like a shitty 80s hair metal band. Ridiculous.

I love Unleashed, it's a magical album. Even though I know it's full of overdubs, I just don't care/

But the 1982 performance is their best, no question there - to me, that's what Priest are about.

I haven't seen the DVD from the last tour, is it anygood?

Yes, but it doesn`t compare with Memphis.

When will they release the live "Evil fantasies" from the "Living after midnight" 12"?

That version kicks ass even if Rob croaks a bit.

THAT was the song....I thought it was Starbreaker.
Ahhh...I just went to Amazon.com and looked on the track listing for the Remastered UITE...and it is not there.

I see said the blind man...

And of course he only croaks during the intro, the song itself has his overdubbed vocals.

As for the recent Priest In The East DVD, I give it a thumbs up.

Halford's voice is not nearly what it once was, but he still pulls out the amazing intense scream....and the version of Victim Of Changes on that DVD is one of the most terrifying that the BAND has ever released.

VERY intense.

But here...don't take my word for it...check it out!

The bad overdubs and overproduction make Live a weak album. Unleashed is classic.

I honestly don't have a problem with it. It captured Priest at a very different moment in their career, and it was really where I got onboard with Priest (Parental Guidance and Turbo Lover were getting hevay rotation on the radio).

I learned that first, discovered the rest down the road, and because of that, Live still holds a warm spot in my heart...

Live was still a lot more listenable than Horseshit of Retribution was...

Honestly, after I heard that album, I wished Ripper was still with them...

And the upcoming Nostrahorseshit concept album? Don't get me started on what a great idea THAT is...

Everybody figured they were gonna start sounding like grindcore, and they did. That's why people hate that record. I don't really hate it.

Halford probably fucked Anselmo up the butt alot while on hiatus!!!!!

I don`t hate "Turbo".

It`s just when I think of it I think more of "Parental guidance" than the killer stuff like "Reckless", if you know what I mean.
