Top Democratic Candidates Stop Short of Withdrawal

Susan Davis reports on the Democratic presidential debate.

The three leading candidates for the Democratic nomination said they would begin immediate reductions in U.S. troops in Iraq upon taking office, but declined to pledge that all forces would be out of Iraq by 2013. “I think it’s hard to project four years from now,” said Sen. Barack Obama (D., Ill.) “If there still troops in Iraq when I take office…then I will drastically reduce our presence there.” Sen. Hillary Clinton (D., Ill.) echoed the comments stating that “It is very difficult to know what we will be inheriting.” Former Sen. John Edwards (D., N.C.) pledged an immediate withdrawal of 40,000-50,000 troops but would similarly not commit to complete withdrawal.

The three frontrunners also declined to say if they were prepared to wage war on Iran if they continue to pursue nuclear weapons. “I would do everything I can to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power,” Clinton said, citing diplomacy and the use of economic sanctions as the first methods of offense. Obama advocated direct talks with Iran. “We’ve got to talk to our enemies and not just our friends,” he said. While Edwards said economic sanctions should be used as “carrots and sticks” to get Iran to abandon its program.

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani has taken a the toughest stance on Iran, pledging to do whatever it takes to get Iran to end its nuclear pursuit. Sen. Joe Biden (D., Del.) took the harshest shot at the former mayor’s foreign policy prowess. “He’s the most uninformed person running for president,” Biden said.

I did love the Biden callout of Rudy...

Shrillary is just so damn pandering it turns my stomach....

And someone PLEASE for the love of God tell her the forced laugh is played already....

Kucinich was fantastic......

Gravel was a riot....

Obama was playing Halo 3 in his mind's eye, somewhere off in never never land...

I like Dodd, would make a solid VP.

Whoever wins can make Richardson the Immigration Czar.

Now if they would just sign the damn oil law, and hand over the rights to Exxon/Mobil we could go home.........

No shit. The Democrats win the congress in the last election and Bush manages to put 30,000 additional troops in Iraq since then. Nice. Go Democrats!

Hillary talks with two mouths, her Senator mouth and her Presidential-elect mouth. Rush has been talking about this for weeks.

She's said the last few years that we gotta get out of there right now, but when asked if she would pull the troops out during her first TERM as president, she said she's not making any promises: the situation could get worse, Iran could get more involved, on and on.

She's basically taking the same position as George W. Bush.

A Who song seems to come to mind here. :)

Which is exactly why I won't get fooled again, and vote for the bitch.

Whoever wins the presidency (and I'm sure it will be a democrat), they will have inherited an impossible fucking mess.

It's a tough position to be in..........

But as I'm so fond of saying, it's all Chimpy's fault, so they can rely on that to defend the criticism they'll get no matter what they do.

Aren't you one of those morons who voted for Bush? Twice?

If so, you are responsible in part the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent people, torture, and other nice things.

How does that make you feel? Like a real man? Do you feel proud?

Yes, I am a proud American.

Thanks for asking.

Well I already knew that.

Your blindness to reality already told me so.

So WARmongerer, are you proud to have contributed to mass murder?

Or are you gonna pass the buck like I expect?

I'm proud of my voting record.

Thanks for asking.

I think W. is secretly endorsing Hillary here.

The Clintons and Bushes have been buddies for years. The Clintons hang out up in Maine during the weekends.

All the more reason to vote for Ron Paul!

Whoever, FORD!

Did you see Dennis on Jay Leno the other night? He was pretty entertaining.

The only time I ever watch Leno, and I see Kucinich sit next to 'The Rock'. lol

I'm sorry, where in this article does any Democratic candidate say we are going to be in Iraq "forever"?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing...

And does withdrawal mean a 100% withdrawal of US forces?

Or is it inevitable that we leave behind a counter-terrorist group in the North Kurd section of Iraq (stable and mostly free of violence)?

No one can predict exactly how things will look years from now...

My favorite moment in the debate had to be when Gravel called out Hillary for voting for the LIEberman-KKKyl "Let's Nuke Iran" ammendment, and also Obama for being a chickenshit and not voting at all.

Gravel was hilarious...

Especially when he "stuck" the credit card comapnies with his 90K bankruptcy. :)

Gravel is like your cranky great-uncle who did time back in Capone's day...

I think Edwards went up a notch in my book.

Shrillary is a CUNT

Obama was MIA

Biden will make a helluva Sec. of State.

FORD, can you cut a check to Sharkey.... I'll get the next one.

:gulp:
