View Full Version : Finding moble missle launchers is a bitch.

We invented the stealth B2 bomber not only to be a penetrating bomber but one that could fly around and find moble missle launchers and take them out.

ICBM's are effective at fixed known targets but not effective against missles on moble launchers.

The Gulf War and the invasion of Afganistahn and second invasion of Iraq have allowed the air force to test the B2 bomber in it's search and destroy role, looking for scud missle launchers roaming the country side.

What we have learned is these moble missle launchers are an absolute bitch to find even when it's a two ton truck modified to get a scud off. The B2 failed in it's role in destroying such launchers.

The Russians are still making nuclear missles that are launched off of moble launchers. Cheaper than a submarine and almost as effective.

That's because the B2's are flying too damn high! You need a combination of spec ops, satellites, drones and low flying tactical aircraft to find em' and take them out.

Nah, not enough range, too slow, cannot carry a large enough payload and too large for recon. If they made a small enough drone that can be carried in several backpacks by a small team, is capable of being fully functional while gliding, then it could be an option. Or better yet, how about an unmanned blimp? Less maintenance and capable of see a wide area with little movement.

the B2's role is to destroy what it's told to destroy and to get the crew back safely. if there's a failure, it's in the intel and reconnaissance that didn't get the B2 the right coordinates.

True enough.

The B2's bombers role is to destroy...not search and destory.
