Anthony 'Totally Fine' Without Van Halen
Michael Anthony with Sammy Hagar

October 24, 2007, 11:40 AM ET

Gary Graff, Detroit
Michael Anthony is getting his post-Van Halen career going in earnest.

After his acrimonious and controversial ouster from the hard rock group he helped to found -- which is currently on the road with original frontman David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang in Anthony's place -- the bassist is once again riding a hard-working sidecar to second Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar.

He's leading his own trio, Mad Anthony Express, which plays a selection of "more obscure" Van Halen tracks, including "DOA" and "Light Up the Sky," and some cover songs. On some nights Anthony and Hagar -- the only VH members to attend the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in March -- bring out their Los Tres Gusanos to play early Hagar material, and at every show the duo plays a set of Hagar-era Van Halen material as the Other Half.

"I'm on stage for a good part of the night," Anthony tells Billboard.com. "I'm just happy to still be out there playing. I'm having a great time doing it. It's not like we need the money; we can just go out there and party with the fans and we have a great time doing it."

Anthony says that Mad Anthony's Express, which currently features guitarist Vic Johnson and drummer John "JD" Douglas -- both from Hagar's Wabos band -- could spur him to launch his own group or recording project. "Possibly," he says. "After this tour I'm gonna check into doing some different things, doing some writing with different people. I've got a lot of friends I've made in this business. I've thought about doing something where I'd use some different people, put some original stuff or some covers stuff together and put my own twist on it. We'll see."

As for Van Halen, Anthony says he's not going out of his way to keep tabs on the group's tour but that "people tell me things, and I heard the tour's been fine." He admits he was "bummed out for a little bit" after being booted from the band -- and especially after he was temporarily replaced from album cover images on the group's Web site -- but that he's largely over it.

"I'm totally fine with it now 'cause it is what it is," Anthony explains. "There's no use dwelling on it or whining about it. The fans know the band. They know what we've done, and I'm really proud of the history of the band. But I'm focusing on having fun and doing what Sam and I are out doing right now. As long as I keep that perspective on it, that's good."

Mike's a class act. It's comforting to know that he's not broke, and contemplating a solo effort.

Right Now.

Word on the street though is there's a youtube about to surface putting into question whether it was actually MiA speaking during the interview.

Parts of it don't line up at about the 2:13 mark.

We're thinking digital enhancements.

Welp, it's good to see he's accepted things with such a good attitude.

Time to move on.....

What else do you say when the realization hits that you
are in fact, totally replaceable ??

Keepin it cool, Mike !

Hey Mike Drop the "Other Half" crap with Hagar..
That just comes across like an egotistical stab at
undermining the brothers significance..

It reaks of a Sammy idea too.. I know he is your
man and all, but dude, truth be told, EVH & AVH
are 3/4 of Van Halen.. They know it, and are pissed
at the "Other Half" shit..

Why not rename it to Van Hagar ?? Seriously..
It would be a more accurate band name.

I cant believe you never rang the brothers when
their mother died. If this is true, that must be
eating away at ya, give em a call !! You are
over the Wolfgang thing, I'm sure its not too late.

Oh, and lastly, you crap all over Sammy Hagar
as a musician, dont play second fiddle to that dude.

You are a cool dude, way cooler than Hagar. He
should be worshipping your footsteps, not the other
way around...

That is all... (Thanks Icon !)

(Panamark deluding himself that Michael Anthony would
actually care about what he says !! :p)

I don't have a problem with MA, but his contributions to Van Halen aren't what made the band GREAT. He's a good backup singer for sure, but he was told exactly what to play on bass.

I love it when people post knee-jerk generalizations, and then when confronted with their own factual errors, back peddle.

Do your homework before spouting off, skippy.

There has been plenty of respect and credit thrown MiA's way in here.

Van Halen was founded that day.

Suppose it's just as well MA is "totallt fine with it", since it was gonna happen without him, regardless of his feelings, blessings or misgivings.

In terms of him doing a solo album...well...can MA actually even WRITE a song?

Agreed he should drop going out as the "Other Half" (the other half of what, the third best Van Halen lineup - behind the classic one and the current incarnation?), regardless of if he continues to associate with Hagar or not.

Suppose I can also see why he continues to hang with Hagar, as well: clearly you're gonna want to gravitate towards someone who wants you around (Hagar), as opposed to those who don't (the Van Halens) or those who don't give a shit either way (Roth).

STILL sticks in my craw a bit that he wasn't asked to participate. Smacks of shabbiness on the part of the Van Halens. But I don't know much of the particulars of the 30-year association MA had with them (have read the conventional wisdom of what transpired, but am not confusing this with probable facts)...maybe, just maybe, MA was the real douchebag culprit in terms of the VH split...although I doubt it.

That's like saying "are we talking The New Yardbirds or Led Zeppelin?"...same fucking band. Or if you really wanted to get technical the original Led Zeppelin had Keith Moon and Jeff Beck in it, and it was Moon's idea for the name. (See Beck's Bolero on the Truth album)

I thought Mark Stone got the axe before they ever got Michael Anthony in for an audition. I could be wrong, and it doesn't really make a fuck since MA was playing with them when they got discovered. However, this "getting tired of Mike" shit with EVH goes waaay back to at LEAST the Fair Warning era. I've got an interview of Ed from when Diver Down was being done, and he's dogging Mike BIG time. Ed says Mike contributes nothing, but bought a new Porsche and remodelled his house on the money he made off of Van Halen.

So yeah, Mike may be the "every man" in that band, and a likeable guy and all, but these circumstances are a long time in the making. I really do feel sorry for him, because Ed and Al should have had the balls to tell him to his face...especially after all of these years together. Of course if Mike maybe had stood up for himself, then this might not have happened. Who knows?

Halen High
10-25-2007, 10:57 PM
I don't believe Mike is "totally fine" with missing THE reunion. He's just accepted his days in VH are over.

And I agree with others who wish Mike would leave Hagar and go do his own thing. As THE bass player during the VH glory days, Mike has legendary status, and would do well to join up with some other legendary rockers and put out an album and tour.

Panamark
10-25-2007, 10:59 PM
I still think the non-contact after Mom Van Halen's death
has a lot to do with this. Add that on top of Edwards thoughts
about MA's contributions all along, and the obvious alignment
with hagar, then throw in EVH's only son who can play bass
and sing...

Is anyone really that surprised ??

Seriously ??

Getting back to the technicalities and the founding member
deal, am I right in saying that Dave knew the brothers at
high school, before MA even came into the picture..

So technically, couldnt we even go back that far ??

All these MF are friends and just like lawyers and judges who fight all day in court they are all members of the same bar association and when the day is over they know that all thier fighting goes into the same retirement plan.

At the end of the day thay are all across the street drinking cocktails together.

Mike's interview style is very "Sammyesque".

Agree?

I think so.

Oh isn't it hilarious that Mike would even ATTEMPT at putting his own band together??

LMAO!!!

As Terry said, can Mike even WRITE a song??

No man, I had a fight with a bro over the phone this morning and I let my anger trickle into here.
This is my oasis/happy place and I just fucked up a little with an angry post: I then deleted it.

No argument here Lounge! Got "STUPID" Reasons! Not excuses! Still celebrating two VH shows from last week! Have to move my wife/stepkids out of the house this weekend! My bad! As Vanhalener said above! This site helps! I have been on a binge lately w/the bottle!
