I need to replace the guts in an old Jazz bass. If anyone has a recommendation for a passive replacement Jazz Pickup set I would sure appreciate it.

The bands I play in really cover the enter spectrum of genres. Are the Duncan's and EMG's pretty versatile? Have you all ever heard of Bartolini pu's?

Bartolini's are pretty groovy from what I hear.

EMG's (being active) have a bit more punch to them than yer standard average pickup.

Seymour Duncan rules as well.

If ya want passive pickups, I can easily say SDs will do you fine.

I played a bass that had Bartolini's and I thought they were kind of screechy in the top end, but overall they didn't sound bad. I think they do a lot of custom pickups for people, so maybe that was what that person wanted. To my knowledge they make the only Gibson Thunderbird replacement pickup out there.

The Duncan Antiquity pickups are VINTAGE sounding. I think they're versatile enough to play anything, but that's just me. Plus, you can always add a bass preamp if you need more punch. I've got a Sadowsky outboard bass preamp that fuckin' owns, but I rarely use it.

I've heard a jazz guitar, but didn't know there were specific basses for jazz.

How do they differ?

They're not basses for Jazz, they're basses called Jazz :)

An Example:

That style bass :)

It blows me away how many instruments Fender got right in the 1950's. You would think in 2007 we would be playing something else. Look at Geddy Lee. He's played a Stienberger and a Wal and he's gone back to the Fender Jazz bass.

I think I'm going with the Fender Custom 60 pickups on one and the Seymour Duncan's on the other. If I like one over the other I'll swap them out.
