I've always felt closer to the albums I own that I love but no-one else knows about. Anyone else know what I mean?

Sure, there are Classic albums, albums that every rock fan SHOULD own, and they have their magic, their brilliance their pure genius.

But then there's the great albums from the bands that should have been huge but weren't. The bands you mention to friends only to be met with a blank and vacant stare which says "Who? What the fuck are you talking about?"

Anyone got any albums like that? Albums that are like old friends?

I'll start.

My first three of these albums come from a British rock band: The Almighty. They started off as a sort of biker rock band, but by the time of their third studio album, Powertrippin', had become something unique, powerful and heavy as hell:

http://www.jamiesummers.dsl.pipex.com/blog/almighty.gif[/url]

Imagine The Stone Temple Piliots meets Warrior Soul, but with a better lyricist and even more anger. I bought this album the day it came out, and love it to death.

Their next record, Crank, was even better. Pure fuckin anger, more stripped down than before and with more of a punk feel. I can't think of many albums with more punch or bite. Just pure power, with amazing lyrics than bite like a bitch on heat. This would be one of my top five favourite albums EVER:

Another one no-one's ever heard of:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8b/Kerbdog_OnTheTurn.jpg/200px-Kerbdog_OnTheTurn.jpg

Kerbdog - On the Turn.

Ireland's answer to grunge, a fuckin' amazing album. Taut and grating guitars, riff after riff after riff, immense chorus's, and songs which are relentlessly passionate and desperately catchy. Bob Mould would have killed to write this. Every song was a winner, IMO.

Next up, The Wildhearts - Earth vs the Wildhearts.

http://cdn.last.fm/coverart/300x300/3262266.jpg

Massive Cheap Trick influence, but this band was far more abbrasive, Huge riffs, kick-yer-teeth in attitude and lyrics that told stories as well as making you grin from ear to ear. The Wildhearts have put out some killer records over the years, but they never came close to repeating this. Very, very British, and one of the best albums of the 90s, IMO.

Great thread binnie

I give it 5 "I'd Hit Its"

I have 2 that to this day, are in heavy rotation in Casa De Lounge

Little Women

"Pretty Wiped Out"

ca. 1990 Portland band led by Jerry Joseph

The Pistoleros

"Hang Onto Nothing"

ca. 2000 Tempe band led by Lawrence Zubia

Pistoleros were actually started by Doug Hopkins after he was booted from The Gin Blossoms.

If anyone here has actually heard of either of these 2 disc I'd be FLABBERGHASTED ;)

Cheers Lounge, stuff like that was exactly what I was talking about, the rare gems.

I've never heard of either band but I really liked the Gin Blossoms, so I'll check out the Pistoleros.

Many thanks :D

Rockdetector Biography« Back to Artist Page

Stylish, Welsh Hard Rock merchants centred upon former UNIVERSE and SKID ROW guitarist PAUL CHAPMAN. LONE STAR was originally called IONA. Prior to adopting the LONE STAR title, a formative drummer, Steve Williams, joined QUEST in 1973 before he journeyed onto premier Welsh rockers BUDGIE. In turn, QUEST bassist Ray Jones joined LONE STAR in 1974.

During 1975, with original vocalist Kenny Driscoll, LONE STAR debuted with a British support slot to TED NUGENT to promote the Epic released ‘Lone Star’ album. Driscoll was to pack his bags in 1977 and was replaced by former TRAPPER vocalist JOHN SLOMAN, who recorded the second album, 'Firing On All Six', with the group. The group failed to survive though and guitarist Paul Chapman, following rehearsals with German act the SCORPIONS, rejoined UFO replacing the errant Michael Schenker whom he had covered for previously. A proposed third LONE STAR album 'Riding High' was shelved, finally seeing a belated release in 1999.

Sloman would, after contributing keyboards to UFO's 'The Wild, The Willing And The Innocent' album, end up joining URIAH HEEP for a period. Post URIAH HEEP Sloman formed part of the shortlived BADLANDS project assembled by ex-TYGERS OF PAN TANG guitarist JOHN SYKES and ex WHITESNAKE bassist Neil Murray. BADLANDS folded when Sykes got the call to join THIN LIZZY and Sloman went solo.

Drummer Dixie Lee teamed up with WILD HORSES before joining Canadian act STARCHILD then British Metal act PERSIAN RISK. He would also sit in on demos for the proto OZZY OSBOURNE band. Chapman's guitar partner Tony Smith formed SCREEN IDOLS with whom he released one album, 'Premiere', in 1979.

In July 2006 Chapman joined the GATOR COUNTRY BAND, a seasoned collection of MOLLY HATCHET veterans vocalist Jimmy Farrar, guitarist Steve Holland, bassist Riff West and drummer Bruce Crump.

Most of the Great Albums that "only I know" are ones I advertise non-stop to anyone who will listen;

"Born Again Savage" by Little Steven [1999]

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519ECHJCWXL._AA240_.jpg

A pleasantly accessible mix of loud guitars, chugging rhythms and barked vocals surrounded by 60s mythology and imagery...even if the lyrics sometimes do get a bit daft.

"Snow" by Spock's Beard [2001]

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Q%2Bcj4hVxL._AA240_.jpg

I see it as "Tommy" for the 21st century (but marginally more proggy)...about a mind reading Albino Priest who can cure people but ultimatley creates his own downfall...the only thing that lets it down is the final cheesey "I love you" from Neal Morse, which may be because he quit the band once the album was released.

Refugee-Refugee [the year escapes me]

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51DscvPrOkL._AA240_.jpg

After Keith Emerson left The Nice to form ELP, the remainding 2 members of the band formed Refugee with Patrick Moraz. Sadly, they only managed one album when Moraz joined Yes for "Relayer".

Brian May-Back To The Light [1992]

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41X608WGWGL._AA240_.jpg

Better than some Queen albums. Certainly in the Top 10 solo albums ever made. Slightly more rockin' than most Queen albums though. And "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head" is "39"'s slightly more electric younger half-cousin twice removed. The Small Faces cover is pretty fun too...although I prefer the cover of Mott The Hoople's "All The Way From Memphis" which he did on the follow up...which on the whole wasn't as good.

Slade-Old, New, Borrowed & Blue [1974]

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ANEZAW80L._AA240_.jpg

Slade are normally viewed as a singles band...but they were a fucking good album band too. Get some early 70s Slade albums...they are fucking good. Better yet, get the 2-CD edition of "Slade Alive", features both volumes of "Slade Alive", plus "Slade on Stage" and the "Alive at Reading" EP. One of the best Live bands ever, For a band who were so successful in the UK, they are they so overlooked.

Cheers Shaun, the Refugee and Little Steven albums sound very interesting.

As you know, I'm not a Queen fan so I doubt I'll like Brian's album. Might give that Slade one a go though....

The first U.K. album is absolutely epic.

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/8825.jpg

The lineup:

John Wetton (Asia, Roxy Music, King Crimson) - Vocals, Bass

Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, Brand X) - Drums, Percussion

Allan Holdsworth - Guitar

Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa) - Keyboards

I guess this one falls within the artsy/fartsy/fusion-type rock of the seventies? Nonetheless, this thing rocks and what little Holdsworth's on it, it's awesome and not like every single album he makes (excluding "Road Games") that sounds the same, IMO.

If I also remember correctly, I'm pretty sure U.K. opened for VH during their first headlining tour? I cannot remember but I'm almost positive that I've read that they did.

U.K. had other albums minus Holdsworth and Bruford which blew but this one's a classic.

If one's a musician, it's worth checking out cos it has a lot of brilliant work. Especially the songs "Thirty Years" and "In The Dead Of Night."

Also and I might as well mention this one cos it also has both Wetton and Bruford. Check out "Red" by King Crimson. Another great record, IMO.

A few...

Altura - Mercy (1996, I think?)

http://www.progscape.com/collection/images/880f.jpg

Mostly it's in the vein of Dream Theater, and this was the only album they put out prior to splitting up, but it's very good...

Blitzspeer - Blitzspeer Live (1990)

http://www.nolifetilmetal.com/images/blitzspeer_live.jpg

Blitzspeer was a GREAT live band...so good, in fact, that their debut was this live EP. They followed it up with a studio album in 1991 (or 1992), but surprisingly enough, for as good as a live band as they were, they couldn't really hack it in the studio and were obviously still finding their legs. They split up not long afterwards, but I think the lead vocalist is now playing guitar in Monster Magnet...

Fear of God - Within the Veil (1991)

http://members.fortunecity.com/crucideth/fog.jpg

I'd heard rumors of a thrash metal band with a female lead singer in early 1990 called Detente, and heard that they'd signed to Warner Bros. and changed their name to Fear of God, so I figured I'd better check it out. Only other hard metal singer I'd ever heard of was Sacrilege, so...I was very pleasantly surprised! Not really thrash, but more goth/metal. Definitely innovative. Seemed like a strange combo to peeps I introduced it to (females and hard metal...no Lita Ford bullshit here), but with the influx of goth/prog/death metal bands now featuring female vocalists, I guess Fear of God kinda predates them all...

Forced Entry - Uncertain Future & As Above So Below

http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/Sources/AMGCOVERS/music/cover200/drc300/c366/c3668218b13.jpg

http://img.mp3fiesta.com/covers/94/9416/alb_30259_big.jpg

These guys came out of Seattle in the late '80s and put out these two albums, in addition to an EP called "The Shore". Uncertain Future isn't quite as good as their second album (As Above, So Below), but I can ABSOLUTELY say that both albums hold up with anything anybody else was doing...Overkill, Testament, Slayer, Anthrax, whoever else...why Forced Entry weren't able to continue on and make it work, I don't know, but these two albums are fucking outstanding...

I would recommend ANYTHING by Kyuss: "Blues for the Red Sun" is easily their best album, but they are all spectacular and totally unique. They should have been huge.

I thought that the Supersuckers had been making records just for me all of these years, LOL! "Evil Power..." is a great good time rock n roll album, with consitently strong songs and great lyrics. "Stuff and nonesense" is a great love song. Cool Manchu baby!

Great clip of "All of Us..", but doesn't the riff remind you of "Burn" by

Purple?!! Always liked John Slomans voice, saw him with Uriah Heep

years ago.

May get shot down here everyone, but have a listen to Steve Hogarth

era Marillion especially "Afraid of Sunlight". Great singer/songwriter.

"Gazpacho" from this album is great.

Savatage - Sirens (1983)

Most people know them from either "Hall of the Mountain King" or as Savatage-Lite aka Trans-Siberian Orchestra...but their debut in 1983, "Sirens", ranks right up there with Iron Maiden, Metallica...any other metal band that came out with their first album in the 80s...

In my own personal list, Sirens ranks at #3 on my list of all time top 10 debut albums by ANYBODY, period...back in '83, they were signed to a tiny label in Florida known as Par Records; copies of the album were so few and far between that Steve Wacholz (drummer) once told me people had 5th/6th generation copied cassettes...

Fucking shame...Criss Oliva's guitar skill was...beyond reproach - simply fucking incredible, the best parts of Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and a bit of Yngwie Malmsteen thrown in for good measure...where they could have gone with REAL management and representation...

Ahhh well...trust me though, this album is a FUCKING ALL TIME CLASSIC.

An old school thrash/power metal band who (unfortunately) signed with Profile Records in the late 80's.

Profile pretty much ruined their career by not funding or promoting them, but not letting them out of their deal either.

This classic metal gem never got the recognition it deserved.

Outstanding production, vocals & a killer guitar tone from what had to be a minimal budget.

In The Dead of Night is one of the all time great prog pieces.

My dad is a massive fan of Bruford's, so I first heard U.K. when I was about...I'm gonna say somewhere between the ages of 6 and 8.

I actually remember saying I thought it was Yes when I first heard it playing in the car.

Why does Bruford always abandon things so quickly?

Good as they are...I wouldn't put them on the same bill as VH...

King's X unfortunately fell into the same trap that the 77's did.

They got tagged as a "Christian band", which means that mainstream rock radio and eMpTyV (even when they played actual music videos) pretty much ignored them.

Meanwhile, Christian radio also ignored them for the most part, and many Christian book & music stores won't sell it if they haven't heard it on the local Jesus station. Never mind that the band's roots trace back to Phil Keaggy and Petra, two of the best known names in Christian music.

Not to mention that what small portion of this genre did accept King's X definitely shunned them after Doug came out of the closet. Not what JC himself would have done, of course, but since when did that matter to this crowd??

I really love this band, I have been a fan since I first heard them in 1988, and seen them maybe 15 times since. I remember distinctly the first time hearing them on the radio. I was driving in my 78 Chevy Camaro, listening to 89.5 fm WSOU, driving across the Rutgers Busch campus, near the football stadium, and on the radio I hear this amazing music and song, the song is "Goldilox", and the band of course, King's X.

I said I'd post some more, so here goes....

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7e/TheShapeOfPunkToCome.jpeg

Refused - Shape of Punk.

This album has a cult following, and I bought it the day it came out after reading a glowing review. It is fucking immense, and the reason for all post-hardcore bands since (At the Drive In etc....). Ok, they are seriously pretentious marxist punks (the record comes with a fuckin' manifesto!) but if you can ignore the bollocks, this is a great piece of music: angry yet accessible; simple but innovative; short but epic. It's a grower too.

Next:

http://www.coverportal.de/cover/audio/t/therapy_troublegum_a.jpg

Therapy? - Troublegum.

I imagine some of the UK guys will have heard of this as they are fairly big here. Amazing Irish punk/metal crossover. Big riffs, big songs, angry and psychotic lyrics and clever song-writing all sparsely produced. It's as though they are playing in the room with you. Just a great, great record which gives me a sort of melancholic yet warm glow every time I play it.

Yes, do that...get back to me on it, actually...this is Savatage at their balls-out most metal...well, almost their most metal, anyway, if the most Savatage you're familiar with is the prog-symphonic stuff of their later years, you haven't heard them at their VERY best at all...

The world record for cycling backwards with a violin is 60.45 km in 5h 09 min.

Christian Adam (neé Patzig *1963) beat his own record as he was sitting backwards on his bike and covered a distance of 60,45 km in 5:08 h with playing his violin. Where? A part of the highway St. Gallen ( Switzerland ) which had not yet opened for usual traffic.

Another one from me (I have around 1100 CDs so there are a few "gems" in there!)

http://www.nolifetilmetal.com/images/badlands_dsk.jpg

Badlands - Dusk (1999, but recorded c.1992)

Ok, I think the first Badlands album is failry well known to hard-rock fans (self-titled, 1989 - if you don't own it, but it!): Jake E Lee shreds all over it, and Ray Gillan has the best voice you've never heard. Sadly, their second album "Vodoo highway" didn't keep the momentum going and sounded a little bloated and uninspired in places; too many softer, mid-paced songs, and too many James Taylor and Eagles influences. With the exception of "Last Time" and "Soul Stealer" (amazing riff) the energy was gone.

Ray Gillan died AIDS c.1993. "Dusk" was essentially the demos for a new album, recorded in 1992 and it is fuckin' incredible. Much more hard-rock than "Vodoo....". Ok, not all of the songs are great and given that this isn't the finished product there are plenty of kinks to be kicked out. But that's why I love it: it was clearly recorded "live in the studio" and you get the sense of a rock band playing in the room, the feel, the energy. It's raw and dirty, you hear when the drummer misses fills and symbol crashes, or when someone goes out of time. To me, these rare errors ADD to the overall impact of the record, it makes it more human. Ray Gillan's voice is also amazing on this one. Well worth a listen.

By 2001, Savatage sucked shit, anyway. They quit being a band in 1993 after Criss died as far as I'm concerned...after that they turned into a revolving door of dipshits that came in and went out faster than Paul O'Neill could change his underwear and Jon Oliva was just going through the motions...

Back in the day, though...God damn, I have NEVER seen such a good live band...don't think I ever again will, either...

Shonen Knife -- "Riding On The Rocket"
The lyrics are in Japanese except the chorus. You'll notice that they sound like the Ramones. They've been called the Japanese Ramones and the female Ramones. Enjoy!

2. Frontburner
3. Hard As A Rock
4. Child Of Sin
5. Asleep At The Wheel
6. Come Beat The Band
7. Hell To Pay
8. Queen Of The Scene
9. Glad All Over
10. Siren Song

Yeah, they are a Jersey band.

I kinda knew these guys, but not well at all. I remember playing a gig with their side/cover band and Dave showing me a Les Paul that Zakk had just given him as a gift, this was around 1990. I always figured DiPietro had eyeballs on his fingertips because the guy never ever looked at hte neck. Dave adn Kenny Dubman were both guys that taught Zakk.

Dirty Penny - Take It Sleazy

I have a copy of this bands recent demo. I honestly doubt they will get signed with a label but I love this album. Kinda reminds me of Motley Crue's 1st albums. I saw them live playing to about 50 people but they gave 110% like it was a sold out Madison Square Garden show.

I love Dusk. I'll go one deeper, I also love A Fine Pink Mist too. I miss Jake E Lee, wish he would do more. Did anyone catch his latest a couple years ago, Retraced?

He did a blues CD a couple of years ago, right? Was that called "Retraced", I can't remember. Seem to recall that the blues thing was decent though. I miss Jake too, I wish he would get back into a rock band.

Once again, we have similar tastes! I thought they'd been making albums just for me all these years :D

This is an immense hardcore record.

I actually quite enjoy the other LOA albums, but they never came close to this. That being said, did you hear their last album (the one that sounded a little bit like Velvet Revolver's first record)? I thought was awesome, possibly the best written songs they've ever done. Not the rage of old, but angst ridden heaviness nonetheless.

Vain "No respect".

I was listening to it at work this morning.

Great songs.

It was released two years too late (1989).

If they had released it in 86/87 when GnR, Poison and Faster Pussycat were breaking out, they would have been up there.

Oh man, I was thinkin' about posting that one too. For me whatreally makes that record is davy Vain's voice - it's such an unusual rock voice, almost effeminate in places, sort of soft but menacing and un-nerving too. "No Respect" and "Bite the Bullet" are about as good as sleaze rock gets. Just an awesome, awesome record. I'm going to have to play it tonight now!

The first song I ever heard by LOA was "Underground" on WSOU, a college radio station. I was instantly captivated by the voice, the rhythm of the guitars and drums and the chorus, "they keep on kicking me down, kicking me down, try to get me underground, underground..." Everyday I felt as hopeless and downtrodden as the person in the tracks "Monday," "Thursday" and "Friday." "It's the words and music that keep me living, keep me breathing."

Yes, I was talking about "Broken Valley", couldn't remember the name.
I know what you mean about rhythm, that band is just relentless and intense and the effect is very similar to the Rollins Band, IMO...

Have you ever listened to Ketih's solo stuff. nothing like LOA but still well worth a spin :D

It certainly is mellow, but the lyrics are consitently strong. Some really interesting stuff in his back cat.

Took a chance on this one after listening to a few of the samples and digging them a lot. I'm glad I did. There's nothing technically fancy about the songs, but it's good, solid, crunchy rock. And you can tell the guy put a great deal of himself into the songs, which is a nice change from the usual "I'm just here to make a quick buck" shills that seem to dominate the music scene today.

Albums that are like old friends?
yes, i've plenty.

The guys from Dream Theater said this album really influenced them. I think Spastic Ink are the true pioneers of Math Rock. Since they’re from San Antonio I know the drummer and guitarist very well. This type of music is not for everybody.

You know what...no

I could understand if someone was saying, posting like "The White Album" or "Sticky Fingers", or hell even "Joshua Tree".

I would question the person's choice of words on a DLR fansite, but I wouldn't question the person's opinion as those works are generally well-liked among rock critics and fans alike.

But really? Trashing DLR in favor of what appears to be some third-rate bunch of Ozzy/Quiet Riot wannabes?

Seriously dude, why even show up here? That's extremely Sheep-esque with that take.

Here are two albums from one band that qualify :

Love/Hate " Blackout In The Red Room " Checkout " Why Do You Think They Call It Dope "

Love /Hate " Wasted In America " Checkout " My Evil Twin "

Love /Hate came out around '89 / '90 . They toured with AC/DC and Skid Row and had lots of momentum at first .

I feel that if they had come out just a couple of years earlier they would have had more success .

However , bandleader/ bassist and resident headcase Skid repeatedly butted heads with their record label Columbia Records .

Big-time No No . They were dropped like a hot rock and bounced around and languished in several small record labels .

They were horribly and unfairly underrated . It was just criminal . Their musicianship was top-notch and they had a swagger that only

the big time bands had . So sad that it imploded . Singer Jizzy Pearl became the on again - off again lead singer for RATT in

Stephen Pearcy's absence . However , for the most part Love / Hate has faded into oblivion .

Yep, this was in the tape player on the way to and from high school for several months. Hard to believe that most of the band used to be the Looking Glass. Yes, that Looking Glass, the dorks that had a hit with "Brandy".

Ok chefcraig, I'll have to dig deeper.

One of my top 10 all time CDs is Brother Cane ~ Seeds from 1995. And Fools Shine On was the ballad/single but High Speed Freezin' closes out a solid rock record with a southern flavor.

from wiki: In 2005, Brother Cane reunited for 2 concerts. One of the shows was released as a two-disc set with never-before-seen backstage, offstage, concert footage (a 40-minute show as the opening act for Van Halen in Fresno from '95) and interview content.

I highly recommend the albums "Brotherhood of Electric (Operational Directives)" and "The Scroll and Its Combinations" by Wellwater Conspiracy. Those two are amazing. Their self titled 4th album is also pretty good. Matt Cameron (Soundgarden + Pearl Jam) and John McBain's (Monster Magnet) are the main contributors to the band. The music doesn't sound anything like the bands they are in / were in and is very 60's.

I'm also currently digging the album "Fables from a Mayfly" by Fair to Midland.

Aside from stuff I posted earlier in this thread, check out any record by Bigelf - classic rock with a twist.

Firebird - Firebird is a great bluesy rock album

Audrey Horne are also very cool - sort of prog meets Alice In Chains

If you like you're prog Amplifier's 'Octopus' is well worth checking out too.

If you like stuff that's really weird, check out Fantomas (Mike Patton from Faith No More)

There are plenty of other little gems in the album reviews thread......

The one and only album by The Flying Tigers. It's self titled and it fucking rocks with great harmonies.

I know ya wrote this years ago, but I picked this one up randomly out of the .50 cent bin at the local record store back in May, 2011. I like to pick out cheapo bin albums with interesting covers and preview them in the store (if the store has a preview station). I've had some pretty good luck actually. Anyway, this was one I ended up buying, happily! So I recommend it as well.

KIX are a band that didn't quite make it past 2 or 3 hits, one of the better glam/rock bands of the 80's.

Got all their albums, after Hot Wire they just fizzled out.Nobody I know has a damn clue who it is when I play them, lol

Another great "not so known" band was TANK.

Got a motorhead vibe with more melodies...their first album was produced by Fast Eddie Clark.

The Hollywood Stars - didn't appear on their debut album, but the original of the song Kiss did on Destroyer (Kiss, like Elvis used to, were able to wangle writing credit on a song they covered). I like this version, it's from 1974, and produced (like the album below) by Kim Fowley:

I think this was their debut album, three years of so after that single. I'm sure these guys must've crossed tracks with VH on the Strip back in the 70s:

Ray Gomez, Volume, Columbia Records, 1980. Been listening to it for 30 years - on and off - and it always sounds good when I go back to it.

It's a bit jazz-funk-rock-fusion in places, but he's a great guitar player - listen up to the solo if you are not initially convinced. Vinnie Appice, later of Sabbath, plays drums on the first of these (it's two songs together in the clip).

Listen to the damn tone at the solo...
