MORE THAN WORDS rockers EXTREME have reunited to record a new album - 12 years after they split.
The Boston, Massachusetts, band reformed briefly in 2001 and 2006 but their planned 2008 reunion will be a more lengthy get together.
The group, fronted by one-time Van Halen singer Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, is also planning on hitting the road for a world tour.
Original members Bettencourt, Cherone and bassist Pat Badger will be joined by new drummer Kevin Figueiredo for recording sessions and dates.
Bettencourt says, "We realised, not only are the people starved for rock 'n' roll, so are we. Let's eat!"

The full statement from Nuno on Blabbermouth is hilarious:

EXTREME Guitarist Explains Decision To Reunite - Nov. 26, 2007

Boston-based rock group EXTREME is set to return in the spring of 2008 with its first album of all new material in 13 years. The band features original members Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Gary Cherone (vocals) and Pat Badger (bass), along with new drummer Kevin Figueiredo.

In the coming weeks, EXTREME will announce its plans for a world tour in 2008 as well as a release date and label for the as-yet-untitled album, which is being produced by Bettencourt. The guitarist says: "It will have all the ingredients of an EXTREME record. The music is always funkier than most rock bands — and born a bipolar bastard child of Mr. Zeppelin and Mrs. Beatles."

EXTREME has been introduced to a new generation of music fans who are connecting with the band through MySpace as a result of the inclusion of their song "Play With Me" on 2007's Guitar Hero video game. Outside of EXTREME, Cherone joined VAN HALEN as lead singer in 1998, co-writing the "Van Halen III" album and touring the world with them. Bettencourt joined up with JANE'S ADDICTION frontman Perry Farrell to form the band SATELLITE PARTY and co-produce their album, "Ultra Payloaded". SATELLITE PARTY also featured drummer Kevin Figuieredo, who was previously in a band with Bettencourt called DRAMAGODS.

Through the years, Bettencourt and Cherone have remained close and continued to collaborate on occasion. But what exactly inspired them to rejoin forces as EXTREME?

"Rock and roll famine…I know it might sound crazy, but there is a massive shortage of rock and roll on this planet," says Bettencourt. "It's almost extinct. I mean the true spirit of quality rock and roll — you know, musicianship, when you would give up every moment of your day to master your instrument and create your own identity and sound so as to respectfully outdo all your past heroes whilst proudly wearing the badge of their influences."

"Passion," says Bettencourt, is what drives EXTREME. "To do whatever it takes, with integrity, to bring music to the people, not because of fame…but just cause you simply couldn't wait to share it with them."

"We realized," adds Bettencourt, "not only are the people starved for rock and roll...So are we. Let's eat."

Look for the group to perform Saturday, December 1 at the Boston Music Awards at the Orpheum Theatre.

:D

Why can't they just say: "We are doing it for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$"?

Doesn't anyone think a musician could have integrity?

Besides, it's been second nature ever since the advent of "the record sales"...

I absolutely think that musicians can have integrity, and that many do. However, I do not think that Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone are reforming because "people are starved of rock n roll...." :)

He went on to add:

and when Gary played that high school talent show, the repsonse was incredible, even the janitor begged us to tour The Netherlands.

Of coarse not. :)

I'll just say this: They're smart. They're going on tour AND they're more open about a new record than some other band...

OhMyGod.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Extreme come in at the end of hair metal?

No matter, if I'm starved for Rock 'n Roll I'm not going to run to Extreme to deliver it.

To be fair, I thought Extreme were a decent rock band and I love Nuno's playing and riffs. However they were ruined by three things:

1) Gary Cherone
2) Taking themselves WAY to seriously and writing lyrics about issues they weren't really bright enough to cover.
3) Gary Cherone

I always just wanted them to be a Rock band instead of writing pretentious shit. But because they chose to do the latter, I am more than happy to laugh my ass of at them....

Nuno is a great player...shame he picked the wrong band.

The pretentious thing doesn't bother me...it's just...well, y'know...

Great! Nuno will fly in only to discover Gary is dressed like Cat Stevens. Then, Nuno will convert to Islam. Gary, obviously, will be cuntfused by this. He'll be like, "WOW! NUNO LIKES MY OUTFIT!....but.....WHY?" Throwing caution to the wind beneath his robe, he hauls ass and changes into a WITCHDOCTOR outfit!

BAM!!!

The only thing Nuno sees is the bone through Gary's nose....he's fucking madder and hornier than hell!!!

Next thing you know? Nuno is dry-socketing Gary's nosehole/eyeball!! The engineers' keep the tape rolling, and a best-selling noise rock EP is born!!!

Nuno should have hit the road with his Missus Suze Demarchi,
they could have done the whole Benatar/Geraldo type deal..
Would have been very cool..

But the question surely on everyone's lips is,
what will happen to the Vagina Monologues now ???

When I saw the title to this thread, I thought Lounge was going to give us the heads up that he was getting back together with his band Love and Rockets.

I, for one, am disappointed.

I'd bet more thean half the UK guys at this site want to be at that gig. If I can get tickets, I'll be there - it's that simple.

Extreme of the other hand - given the choice between seeing them, and having piles.....

I'd taken the lesser of the pain and choose to have piles.
