STUDIO CITY -- A water main broke in Studio City Monday, sending thousands of gallons of water through the yard of a home belonging to guitarist Eddie Van Halen, then cascading down Coldwater Canyon Avenue, prompting its closure.
The rupture occurred at 12754 Mulholland Drive, near Coldwater Canyon Avenue, around 1 a.m., said Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Terry Schneider. She said the break, which caused water to gush out of a horizontal pipe, was caused by a broken air valve.
Water cascaded down Coldwater Canyon Avenue as far as Ventura Boulevard, about a mile away, leaving the street blanketed by mud and debris.
Coldwater Canyon Avenue is closed between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard while a DWP crew attempted to fix the water main.
