I was checking those out the other day. I really liked the fuzz effects and in particular the Seek Wah sounds really cool.

Very cool. There are some neat EL84 based amps that are brown but not as small and easy to carry. The thing is cute.

I imagine the price for the Nano Amp isn't small. What do they go for? $500?

ELVIS

1/2 watt and i've seen it for under $500...

Not much though...

But that's the best way to get real in your bedroom wide open Brown Sound power tube overdrive...

Check some of the YouTubes...

The Zvex website has some cool information on the little tubes that amp uses. They are Phillips military grade tubes made to withstand 500 G forces and five hits from a hammer! They were the latest tube design before hardened transistors and integrated circuits replaced tubes.

They also make a stereo version of the amp that you can play your iPOD through. Looks like the expensive toys you see in a Hemlicher/Schumacher catalog.

Cool review...

Oh, the sound! This thing sounds great with just about any guitar, but IMO, it really shines with a Les Paul with PAF-type humbuckers. That's no surprise, seeing how Zach voiced the Nano Head with his 1968 Les Paul Custom with early 60's PAF's. 1/2 watt distorted might not sound very loud to you, but it's loud enough (remember: this is still a tube amp, not solid state. The rules governing volume are different in this case). Its definetly over conversation volume. As I said before, the Nano is voiced like an old, non-master volume Marshall Plexi. Everybody that I've seen, even people who don't play guitar, have been taken aback when they hear this little beast. It sounds best with a good set of Greenbacks or Blue Alnicos (its a tigher sound with the Blue Alnicos, but I prefer the Greenbacks in a 4x12 myself), but it will work with any speaker.

You might notice a little funkiness in the highs, however, if you don't use a set of Greenbacks or Alnicos (like if you use Vintage 30's). G12H30's sounded pretty good to me with this amp, too. The clean tones are a little quiet, but setting the switch to the Thin Man, putting the volume at 12:00 o'clock and switching to the white cloud can yield a very nice, old Marshall-esque clean that's very pleasing. That being said, this amp was made to rock.

Crank up the gain and it starts getting into Zeppelin territory, all the way to Randy Rhoads-era Ozzy. And that's about as heavy as it gets remember, it's supposed to sound like an old Marshall, not a Dual Rectifier. The amp was really designed for recording purposes, overall. I swear, this thing to tape sounds amazing. When I had my Marshall 1960TV 4x12 with Greenbacks I got really, really, really close to that Van Halen Mean Street tone with my 1969 Les Paul Custom. That's what makes this amp so great: you have a raging power-tube esque overdrive that you can just stick a mic in front of pretty much right away. Recording a monstrously loud, 100-watt beast takes a LOT of time and effort, whereas the Nano Head does the job extremely well with a complete tube audio path at a great volume for recording.

Z.vex is some major funk mojo. I wonder who hand paints all those little boxes?

With the military grade tubes and chrome roll bars. I think you could bludgeon Sammy Hagar to death with one and drop it on the sidewalk and it probably still would work. :D

I just picked up an old version of the Palmer Speaker Simulator. It would be fun to run that little amp into the Palmer and then run it into a clean power amp and run a few 4x12 with it! :D Who needs big amps now when the new FET power amps are so good?
