BALTIMORE (AP) - When a die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan styled himself the "Goof on the roof," and vowed to remain perched atop a Canton bar until the team won a game, many long-suffering fans were amused.
But Ron Stach's ex-wife was not.

She alerted authorities to an outstanding warrant and on Wednesday, police arrested Mr. Stach as an alleged deadbeat father.

"I just think it's horrible that everyone out there thought he was this great supporter of the Ravens, and he hasn't supported his own kid in the last 18 years," Kelly Stach said Thursday.

Mr. Stach owes more than $43,000 in child support, according to testimony during a bail hearing in Baltimore County District Court yesterday. A judge set bail at $7,000. It could not be determined yesterday whether Stach has an attorney.

Mr. Stach began his vigil for victory Dec. 11, right after the injury-plagued Ravens were massacred by the Indianapolis Colts, 44-20, running their losing streak to seven games. That streak now stands at nine consecutive losses.

Mr. Stach vowed to remain on his rooftop perch above the Canton Station bar until either the Ravens won a game, or coach Brian Billick got fired. Neither has happened yet.

The bar owner, Darren Petty, set him up with a tent, two heaters, five meals a day and all the beer he could drink. Patrons had their pictures taken with him and shared drinks with him. He got plenty of face-time on local television.

But as the hoopla grew, so did Ms. Stach's indignation.

She said her son, now 18, is attending college full-time now, and has "huge, huge, huge" expenses.

That's why when she saw her former husband talking about how he had spent $500 on Ravens memorabilia and clothing, she said asked herself, "He can pay all that money for Ravens stuff, but he can't pay $50 a week for child support?"

The latest warrant was issued June 6, according to court records. There also were warrants from the previous two years charging Mr. Stach with owing another woman roughly $12,000 in child support payments for their 14-year-old son.

Mr. Petty said Mr. Stach denies the charges. He grew up with the part-time construction worker and spoke with him about the charges.

"I tell you what," he tsaid. "Any goof who wants to go on this roof, we're going to do a background check from now on."

He should be happy. Billick got fired.

Good for him, I have no sympathy for deadbeat dads....

Amen to that.

The total of back-child support in this country is staggering.
