The starting pitching worries me. Vazquez and Brown have done the job, but Mussina hasn't and Contreras and Osbourne have sucked.
Lieber is still a question mark.

So what's the deal with the Yanks...they are more or less sleepwalking to first place...

what's going to happen when ALL the bats wake up...and they will...

and who wants to bet that the Yanks sign fucking RJ...or another big name pitcher...

or worse...2 starters...

rumors already have Contreras and a prospect to the Yanks for Armas Jr....can't see that...but wow...Armas is going to be a stud...

Bob_R

Heard a rumor yesterday: Garciaparra wants out of Boston. The Yanks will get him and make him a 2nd basemen. :)

POJO_Risin
06-22-2004, 11:23 AM
Nomar should want out after they virtually told him they didn't want him while they were shoppin' for ARod...

he won't end up in New York though...I still think Anaheim would be a good fit...and I think he has a house out there with his soccer trolip...

Igosplut

Garciaparra and Pedro are both gone after this year. both have broken off contract talks and are looking elsewhere......

I would agree that Normar probably wont end up in NY, I dont think they'd want him anyway. Pedro though is another story....

POJO_Risin
06-22-2004, 01:18 PM
I don't think Pedro is good enough to even to have NY look at him...he's a great pitcher right now...but is a pussy...and skills are going...going...not gone yet...but soon will be...

Nomar will end up in Anaheim...not this year though...

They're in that mode that they're always in...the relax mode until the playoffs...

problem with that...complacency...is that when you get an upstart in there...like the Marlins and the Angels...they play the season with all 8 cylinders clicking...and don't have to turn it up...

The Yanks need some young blood in there that haven't tasted it...

Giambi diagnosed with parasites, out of lineup vs. Red Sox

By RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writer

June 29, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ailing Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi was diagnosed with parasites and was pulled from the starting lineup Tuesday night in the opener of New York's three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

When asked specifically what the doctor told him, Giambi said he didn't remember.

``I don't have a Ph.D. and I'm not world renowned,'' Giambi said.

The former AL MVP said he'd been feeling exhausted for about three weeks. He began taking a new set of antibiotics Tuesday and said a doctor told him he should feel better within a couple of days.

``There should be no reason for being this exhausted. I'm 33, not 50,'' Giambi said. ``It kind of makes you understand why you're getting jammed by guys throwing 88 miles an hour.''

Giambi has one hit in his last 14 at-bats and is in a 13-for-65 rut. He hasn't homered since hitting his 11th of the season on June 6, and his average has dropped from .271 on June 7 to .237.

``This sort of explains it to be more than a slump,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ``He still looks a little washed out.''

Giambi wasn't surprised Yankees owner George Steinbrenner had recently criticized him a bit.

``In some cases, he was right,'' Giambi said. ``I wasn't feeling real good and I was hurting the team.''

Torre also wasn't startled by Steinbrenner's statements.

``When the owner got on (Hideki) Matsui last year, I think we all realized we're all vulnerable,'' Torre said.

On Sunday, Giambi looked so bad when he got to Yankee Stadium that Torre sent him to a hospital. Giambi, who looked glassy-eyed, took two bottles of intravenous fluids and did not play during the Yankees' day-night doubleheader sweep of the New York Mets.

Giambi started feeling ill a couple of weeks ago when he caught a stomach virus from teammate Gary Sheffield.

Torre originally had Giambi batting seventh Tuesday night. He was replaced at first base by Tony Clark, who hit eighth. Torre moved center fielder Kenny Lofton from ninth to leadoff, and dropped designated hitter Bernie Williamsfrom first to sixth and catcher Jorge Posada one notch to seventh.

Notes

RHP Kevin Brown, recovering from a back spasm that forced him out of a start June 9, threw 62 pitches in his third bullpen session. His return was delayed after an unsatisfactory bullpen outing Sunday night. ``Better than the last time,'' pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said. Brown is to throw again in the bullpen on Thursday before the Yankees decide whether he needs a rehabilitation start in the minors or can rejoin the rotation. ``When we get to the point where he has a couple of good bullpens, he can convince me of anything,'' Torre said. ... RHP Jon Lieber has felt weakness in the shoulder, but Torre isn't overly concerned. Lieber missed all of last year following an elbow operation, and Torre attributes the weakness to the layoff. ``Probably he's not all the way back yet from the surgery,'' the manager said. ... RHP Mike Mussina is to start Friday's opener of a three-game series at the Mets, and he'll be followed by RHP Jose Contreras and RHP Javier Vazquez. ... Sheffield did not have a second cortisone shot in his right shoulder, which hasbursitis, and was in the lineup in right field.

The Yankees are on a losing streak right now. Better now than later though.

But, I tell you this much if their hitting and pitching falter at the same time in the playoffs like it is now they're doomed.

They're such an offensive juggnaut that if they are on they can get by with their soft pitching. Just get the lead and give the ball to Mariano.

POJO_Risin

and Arod to pull his head out of his ass...

POJO_Risin
08-28-2004, 01:02 PM
The playoffs are going to be interesting...because let's face it...record or not...the Yanks are not the same team...

and they've got nothing comin' up...

Now you Yank fans can just say we'll buy another team...

but fact of the matter is this...the ONLY good Yankee teams...are the teams that have homegrown talent supported by superstars...

It will be years before the Yanks win another series...

Bob_R
08-29-2004, 09:10 PM
Oh I agree Pojo. The Yanks aren't the dominant team that they were in the mid-late nineties. It's not going to be easy. If their pitching gets on a roll and their hitting is on though they'll be tough. Get the lead and give the ball to Mariano (two innings in the playoffs).

Conversely, if they hit a dry spell. Especially pitching wise they'll be doomed.

BTW, where the fuck is my vote! :D :) ;)

I think things are gonna get worse for the pitching....

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kevin Brown might have punched himself out of the pennant race, and the New York Yankees are angry about it.

Brown broke his non-pitching hand when he punched a wall in the clubhouse Friday night during New York's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

``You just can't do this, there's no doubt about it. You've got to keep your emotions in check,'' Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. ``It's a major issue that we shouldn't be dealing with. It's a problem.''

Especially at this point in the year. The loss cut New York's AL East lead to just 2 1/2 games over the Red Sox, its smallest margin since before games of June 12. The Yankees led by a season-high 10 1/2 games on Aug. 15.

Now they might be without one of their best pitchers down the stretch. Frustrated by an injury-filled season, Brown's hot temper could cost the Yankees at the most important time.

``Stupidity,'' he said, choosing his words carefully.

``I reacted to frustration I'd swallowed all year. ... There are no excuses. I let it boil over and I did something stupid. I owe my teammates an apology for letting my emotions take over like that.''

Already short on starting pitching, the Yankees were unsure how long the 39-year-old right-hander might be out. He was to be examined by a hand specialist Saturday.

``My plan is to splint it and pitch. I just pray that my stupidity didn't hurt the team,'' he said.

Acquired from Los Angeles last offseason, the oft-injured Brown (10-4) missed seven weeks in June and July with a strained lower back and intestinal parasite. He tweaked his knee while covering first base on an awkward play in the fifth inning Friday, then was hit on the right forearm by Miguel Tejada's RBI single in the sixth.

Steamed by it all, he walked around the clubhouse in the middle of the sixth and punched a wall, breaking two bones in his left hand.

That was the end of his night.

After the game, Cashman and Yankees manger Joe Torre were visibly annoyed. All-Star catcher Jorge Posada refused to answer questions about Brown's injury.

Cashman said Brown could be disciplined or fined. Torre said he spoke to Brown and expressed his disappointment.

``Certainly uncalled for and unnecessary,'' Torre said. ``There's more to this game than one person. We rely on him a great deal. It's not something that's helping the team, obviously.''

After the game, the Yankees began reviewing Brown's contract to determine whether a self-inflicted injury could void the guarantee language, one baseball official said on the condition of anonymity. No determination had been made, the official said.

Brown is earning $15 million this year and is due $15 million in 2005, the final season of his $105 million, seven-year deal.

POJO_Risin
09-04-2004, 10:25 AM
And that typifies what happens when you get away from Torre making decisions on players...and have Steiney at the helm...

The Yanks are fucking toast...no way they have the staff WITH Brown in the lineup...

POJO_Risin
09-04-2004, 10:29 AM
LMFAO...that last statement shows you where the Yanks are...

gazing at contracts...looking for a way to fucking void them...

Shitty management...when it's all said and done.

and it's always been. The only good thing that Steinbrenner did was hire Torre...and give him some control...once that ended...so did the Yankee reign...

let's not forget...the only time the Yankees were good under Torre are the first couple of years when he bought them...because he didn't have time to deal away all his young guys...

and in 1996 on...after he gave Torre some creedance...and they had some good youngsters...

More good news for the Yankees....

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -New York Yankees righthander Kevin Brown underwent surgery Sunday for a broken left hand and is expected to miss at least three weeks and perhaps the rest of the season.

Brown broke his non-pitching hand when he punched a wall after Friday night's loss to Baltimore.

The surgery was performed by hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and Yankees team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Pins were inserted in Brown's fractured fifth metacarpal bone and third metacarpal bone.

"Three weeks, that is the optimistic scenario," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "The worst case is that he won't be able to pitch for us the rest of the year."

The injury could not have come at a worse time for the Yankees, who lead Boston by just 2 1/2 games in the American League East.

Brown had allowed three runs and five hits in six innings Friday. He apparently was upset about a smash that went off his arm and hurting his knee on a groundout.

The 18-year veteran, who is making $15.7 million this season, has battled injuries throughout his first season in New York.

"Stupidity," Brown said. "I reacted to the frustration I swallowed all year. I did a good job of controlling it until this point. There are no excuses. I let the frustration boil over."

Brown's bosses were not happy with the incident, which leaves the team's already shaky rotation with yet another question mark.

"It's a major injury that we shouldn't have to be dealing with, but we are," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "You just can't do that. There are no excuses."

Brown is 10-4 with a 3.99 ERA for New York.

17-8 loss to a last place team???

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Joe Torre was left speechless by the New York Yankees' latest embarrassing loss.

Two weeks ago, when Cleveland shocked the top team in the AL with a 22-0 clobbering, the Yankees manager called his players to a meeting.

But after the Kansas City Royals scored 10 runs in the fifth inning of a 17-8 rout Monday night, Torre decided just to let it go.

``I don't know what I would say to them,'' Torre said. ``We didn't pitch very well. We know we can score runs, but in order to win you need to pitch. It was not a good day.''

John Buck hit a three-run homer and Angel Berroa had two hits and scored twice in the fifth inning.

The Royals sent 15 men to the plate against four pitchers in the biggest inning against the Yankees since Boston scored 11 in a 13-7 victory on May 31, 1998.

It was the second double-digit inning in a week for the Royals, the AL's losingest team. They scored 11 in the third inning of a 26-5 victory Thursday over the Detroit Tigers.

On Monday, Kansas City scored on a walk, a balk, two wild pitches, a home run and three singles and dropped New York's lead to three games in the AL East over idle Boston.

While the Yankees go for a championship, the Royals are nearing the end of a miserable season -- concentrating on not breaking the franchise record of 100 losses.

``Every time a team is in first place they don't want to play a last-place team because the last-place team wants to show they belong in the big leagues,'' Royals manager Tony Pena said. ``They have nothing to lose.''

Kansas City????? Wow.... Stienbrenner's blood pressure must outta sight over this.....

SOMEBODYS ass is gonna get kicked for these losses. Wanta bet if this continues in any fashon Torre gets his walking papers????

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) - A grieving Mariano Rivera returned to Panama after two family members were electrocuted in his pool, but the star reliever intends to be in New York when the Yankees open their playoff series with the Boston Red Sox.

Rivera learned of the deaths while celebrating with his teammates in the clubhouse after the Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins on Saturday to reach the AL championship series.
"I have to comply with my family obligations, and I will return to New York on Tuesday," he told the newspaper La Prensa upon arriving in Panama late Sunday.

Victor Dario Avila, a cousin of Rivera's wife, Clara, and his 14-year-old son were killed Saturday while cleaning the pool at the pitcher's home, Rivera's cousin, Irma Rivera, told The Associated Press.

The teenager, also named Victor Dario Avila, apparently touched an electrical wire while tending to the pool in Puerto Caimito, 40 miles from Panama City. His father died trying to save him, Irma Rivera said.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the Daily News that Rivera would be in the bullpen for Game 1 of the ALCS. Rivera's agent, Fernando Cuza, told The New York Times and Newsday the closer informed him he would be with the team Tuesday night.

Yankees manager Joe Torre was expected to address the matter during Monday's workout at Yankee Stadium. New York advanced by beating Minnesota 6-5 in 11 innings, with Rivera getting the win.

Both the Times and the News reported Monday that Rivera's brother-in-law discovered the victims and was injured while trying to rescue them from the water. The Times said the man, the husband of Clara Rivera's sister, was hospitalized Sunday night in stable condition, according to a correspondent for Editora Panama America, which publishes three national newspapers in Panama.

Avila was a fisherman who also cleaned and maintained Rivera's home. Clara Rivera was traveling to Panama following the accident, family members said.

"Everyone is sad," Irma Rivera said. "Victor was a good man."

Rivera, a key to the Yankees' four World Series titles and six AL pennants since 1996, has been perhaps the biggest factor in their postseason success, converting 30 of 33 save chances. Torre considers Rivera so dependable that New York fans often count the game as a win as soon as they hear "Enter Sandman," the Metallica song played at Yankee Stadium when Rivera jogs from the bullpen to the mound.

Against Boston in Game 7 of last year's ALCS, Rivera pitched three scoreless innings in his longest appearance since Sept. 6, 1996. He won the series MVP award.

While the acquisition of Tom Gordon enabled Torre to lessen Rivera's eighth-inning appearances and helped the closer save a career-high 53 games this year, the Yankees regard Rivera as irreplaceable, a reason the team agreed in March to a $21 million, two-year contract extension through 2006.

"It's a domino effect when you lose a guy like Rivera," pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said last year, when Rivera began the season of the disabled list with a groin injury.

MLB recalls pro-Yankees T-shirts

BOSTON (AP) - Yankees fans will need more than a T-shirt to taunt the Red Sox.

A day before Boston and New York started the AL championship series, Major League Baseball recalled a T-shirt it had sanctioned because it rubbed Red Sox fans the wrong way.

The message on the shirt that drew the negative reaction read: "Hey Red Sox ... Who's your daddy?"

The shirt bears both a Yankees logo and a picture of a red pacifier with the letter "B" on it - a reference to remarks Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez made after a recent loss to Boston's longtime rivals.

"Call the Yankees my daddy. I can't find a way to beat them at this point," Martinez said.

MLB began offering the shirt for wholesale distribution to licensed retailers over the weekend and promoted it on a website, spokesman Carmine Tiso said.

On Monday, the few thousand shirts that were made were recalled from retailers, and the shirt was removed from the website.

"We did hear some feedback from the Boston fans, who didn't necessarily feel they were comfortable with the T-shirt and the message on it," Tiso said. "Some fans felt it went a little too far, and obviously in this instance we're listening to our fans."

Although most MLB-sanctioned apparel promotes individual teams without denouncing their rivals, there have been some items that touched on baseball's biggest rivalries.

The ALCS starts Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Last year, New York beat Boston on Aaron Boone's 11th-inning homer in Game 7.

I can see being mad and booing - it was difficult to see "the swat" on tv before the replay - they don't announce these things over the loudspeaker and they sometimes don't show controversial replays on the big screen.

Why did Jeter have to go back to 1st? He would have been safe at 2nd if there was no swat. Was that a penalty? Not that it had any effect on the game.

Yeah, he would have been at second, but aparently there is a 30 yard penalty for interferance :D

I wondered about that myself but they cleared it up after the game.

Interferance call with a runner on states that the runner must go back to the last base he was safe at before the interferance.

That rule really needs to be changed to a judgement call.....Jeter had second.

Since they play in October quite a bit, I don't get it. A world series dog, maybe, but Plenty of October dogs. They choke on them frequently.

OK, let's see... it's only the worst collapse in American sports history...

So the Sox pounded Kevin Brown; this is a surprise?

Ed Whitson - Kenny Rogers - Jeff Weaver - Javier Vazquez?

If you can't beat Lowe in two tries, you don't deserve the pennant...

Pedro Martinez will get a HUGE contract as these two teams bid against each other...

I never want to see Tom Gordon again...

After seeing what's become of Giambi & Vazquez, Nick Johnson's not looking to bad....

Let's see: any silver linings here on the morning after the worst day in Yankee history?

Maybe better tickets will be available for weekend games next year?

I got a good night's sleep finally...

A hot Asian chick sat next to me on the train this morning; yes I know that has nothing to do with anything, but it was a good thing on a bad morning!

An unidentified Boston Red Sox fan is covered in blood after being injured outside Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts October 20, 2004. Riots erupted after the Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in Game seven of the ALCS to secure a spot in the World Series.

It is? Ask any player on any team if they'd rather beat the Yankees or win the WS. You'll be crying in your cheerios if Boston can't finish the job. No matter what kind of bullshit like "Hey, we beat the Yankees. That's all that matters." you try to pull out.

Wray,

To alot of people, the World Series is anti-climatic. The Sox did something NO other team has ever done, and the Yankees had the biggest collapse in playoff HISTORY.

This year will always be remembered for the Red Sox beating the Yankees.

Anytime any team from here till the end of baseball that gets in an 0-3 hole, the announcer will say, 'no team has ever come back from an 0-3 hole, EXCEPT for the 2004 Boston Red Sox against the Yankees.'

Wray,

I know it's a SAD SAD SAD SAD SAD day in NY, but don't try to minimize the situation.

Imagine the horror in NY if we DO win. The WS win is something I hope we win (not trying to think ahead too much, there is too much history) and I admit our track record isn't good. However, we are erasing so much already, that anything is possible.

Are you serious? I'd say it's you that is looking for a way to try and minimize the situation if the Boston can't finish the job.

Imagine the horror in NY if we DO win.

Horror? Maybe for some, but not me. Unlike you, I care more about my team winning than I do my rival losing. That seems to be the mindset of Red Sox fans, as you are showing a perfect example of. I won't feel any different if the Red Sox win the WS than I will if the Cardinals win. The fact is, my team won't be winning this year. After that, it means nothing to me on what the Red Sox or any other team do.

But hey, at least you beat the Yankees, right? :)

Prediction

Sox take the first 3 from Cards then Cards come storming back taking the remaining 4.

Instantly making the Yankee choke job NOTHING in comparison.

ps, Ive NEVER chanted 'Yankees Suck...." because I know that 26 World Series Chanpionships means that you dont suck. And I think that Derek Jeter is one of the greatest 'gamers' of all time (but he really needs to stop jumping out of the dugout every time the Yanks hit a home-run...)

I do thank you for being a sportsman about it.

Perhaps now that the Red Sox have won the big one, our teams and cities can respect each other and be more civil...

probably not, was dreaming about the look on A-Rod's face when we were victorious tonight....but I do hope we can.
