U.S. now sees Iran as pursuing nuclear bomb
In a reversal since a 2007 report, U.S. officials expect the Islamic Republic to reach development milestones this year.

"Reporting from Washington -- Little more than a year after U.S. spy agencies concluded that Iran had halted work on a nuclear weapon, the Obama administration has made it clear that it believes there is no question that Tehran is seeking the bomb.
In his news conference this week, President Obama went so far as to describe Iran's "development of a nuclear weapon" before correcting himself to refer to its "pursuit" of weapons capability.

Obama's nominee to serve as CIA director, Leon E. Panetta, left little doubt about his view last week when he testified on Capitol Hill. "From all the information I've seen," Panetta said, "I think there is no question that they are seeking that capability."

The language reflects the extent to which senior U.S. officials now discount a National Intelligence Estimate issued in November 2007 that was instrumental in derailing U.S. and European efforts to pressure Iran to shut down its nuclear program."

"career government officials who had battled with conservatives earlier in the administration on policy issues have now migrated to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), which coordinated the writing of the estimate."

And remember, he mentioned Pakistan throughout his campaign, and they already have nuclear weapons...

Yet when this lying half-wit plunges the country into a turd hunt for weapons of mass destruction, he's protecting the country, right? Talk about grasping at straws.

I'll admit I'm disturbed at the possibility that Obama seems to be validating these lies, and the fact that he made Miss Obliteration his Secretary of State isn't helping alleviate that apprehension.

What I don't understand is why our resident Likud apologist Sgt Schultz isn't openly cheering the thought of Iran being blown off the planet.

Honestly though, right now I would say the bigger problem is how the power in the Israeli Knesset shakes out. Their election was "too close to call" the other day, and I don't believe they announced a Prime Minister yet. Let's all hope its NOT NuttyYahoo. Then it's a matter of getting Ahmadinnerjacket out of there in Iran's election in June, getting a more reasonable figurehead in place, then we can return to where things were in 2003, when Iran wanted to come to the table, but the BCE shut them down because they had to keep the "Axis of Evil" myth going.

Who gives a fuck? What's your point?

And I recall the report stating that it would take several years to get a bomb whereas the people in the Bush admin were crowing that they'd about have it by now...

BTW, what does "Obama" have to do with the 2007 report other than absolutely fucking nothing? Because I noticed the article lacks almost any specifics as too how the NIE report is now being discounted...

And whomever said the Iranians WEREN'T seeking the bomb?

Even if Iran got a nuke, they still wouldn't have the capability to hit us.

We'll see how Obama reacts...

I see what you are saying, that a long ranged missile-styled weapon would test the limits of technology. Yet that is not the only manner the payload could be delivered. Think about how many containers enter U.S. ports on a daily basis, and the concept becomes frightfully chilling.

That just strengthens the debate for having more security here. Bring back some of the troops stationed in the 130 different countries worldwide and do more on the home front to secure our ports.

Thats something that has needed to be done for a long time. We fight a war on drugs and shitloads of the product come right through our ports. Why haven't we made them more secure yet?

Well, the bailout has money in it to beef up airport security..........kinda hard to protect the homeland when all the money was being funneled into a failed occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan..........why even have a DHS? You hit the nail on the head......if you can smuggle kilos of drugs into this country, how hard would it be to smuggle a dirty bomb or biological weapons.........we spent so much time worrying about bringing freedom to the rest of the world, that we have not secured our own borders.

Iran wants to be a player in the Middle East and if they are given a chance I think they would get a nuclear weapon......after Bush's fuck up about the Axis of Evil speech after they helped us in Afghanistan and Iraq......they had publicly came out and said 9/11 was wrong and opened the channels of communication with us........We would of had the chance at the best relations with Iran since the Shaw.....

Part of me says...let Israel deal with them but if that happens the whole Middle East will blow up like a powder keg.....really at this point threating them hasn't worked......we can't really afford to invade them.....we've tried everything else but diplomacy....fuck it, it might work......

Failed Diplomacy 101........turned potential friends into enemies because you think that Iraq is going to become a McMerica and we'll be able to dictate how the Middle East will act.......that hasn't worked out too well, either.....

Having said all that.......those fucking Iranians are some crazy bastards....giving them a nuke.....no fucking way. Mix religion and an attitude.....geez, they might go Bush on US.

If so, that means his predecessor would as well. I understand that this is the reason Iranians leave Iran.

I doubt it. The Iranians have a bit more sense than say, Saddam.
He wouldn't dare use a WMD on the US in fear of retaliation that would assure it's destuction. Same goes for Iran. It would be an ignorant move on their part.

Iran should be blown off the planet. Followed immediately by Israel, and then every other religious zealot based country.

Then the World would become a better place.
