Other than Ironweed sounding like a Soundgarden knockoff, the rest sound like every 17 year-old in any guitar store in Anywhere, USA.

I guess I'm jaded..

You might be. ;)

If you said most stoner sounded like a Sabbath knock off you would be right. Earth is unique though, great band.

Coincidentally (or not) "Earth" was one of the names the band used before finally settling upon "Black Sabbath". Considering this group sounds like mid-seventies era "Crazy Horse", it's an odd choice. :)

Maybe I should check out Crazy Horse then. I've got two Neil Young albums.

Kyuss were such a great, great band - how on earth they ended up spawning the yawnfest that is Queens of the Stone Age I'll never know.

Fu Manchu are another uber-cool stoner band. Fuzzed up, grooved out heaviness.

The first Sleep album is a classic - more Sabbath than Sabbath?

Nebula are cool, as are the Spiritual Beggars.

There are a lot of 'stoner by numbers' bands, however.

Yep a lot of average stuff, that goes for those IW and BW songs. Didn't really like what I heard of Fu Manchu or even Orange Goblin. I do think Dead Meadow is quite a good band. Not that there's anything brilliant going on there...

There's a great record in Orange Goblin, they just haven't made it yet...

;) That sounds about accurate.

If we're talking about Doom, we've got to talk about St. Vitus.

Man, that band rules. What was their finest hour?

Hellraiser!!

Pentagram is a cool band, specially their 70's stuff....It's probably the biggest influence for all those Stoner bands!!

That's a band I haven't gotten to yet. I will make amends.

Andy, don't know if I'd call it Stoner, but check out a record Leadfoot's 'Bring It On' if you can find it.

Cool groovin' rock record.

While you're downloading, check out:

Baroness - 'The Red Album'

It's progressive, but stoner. It's a grower, rather than an instant love. One of the best records of last year, IMO.

Anything by Hermano - John Garcia (Kyuss) new band. A bit patchy in places but balls out rock when they get it right. You can't go wrong with that voice.

High On Fire - Death is This Communion.

Post- Sleep project. Easily the best record from this band, and a complete riff fest. Again, not digestable in one listen but well worth the perseverence.

Righto, I'm adding those to my list, will check them out later.

A little atmospheric 'desert rock'

The Ironweed vocalist is alright, he reminds me of a young John Bush type. Except the rap parts have to go..

It seems to me this current Stoner Rock trend is somewhat reminiscent of the blues and heavy guitar from the Seattle trend but it's a lot of heavy for the ear than I can bear anymore.

At least Sabbath showed us to accent the heavy with spaces in between, and good vocals with decent lyrics. I don't see that lesson learned in these bands really but that doesn't mean they can't turn out to be stepping stone formations to the next big trend.

Of these I liked the Black Mountain most. Keep posting this vague genre nobody cares about, it's interesting!

 If you say so. I suppose if I search I can find 5 new bands a day, there's tons of bands around and well ... hail youtube.

Today's bands to check out:

Stoner:

Monster Magnet - they have more strings to their bow than Sabbath, and paint in a lot of colours. Earlier albums ('Spine of God', 'Dopes to Infinity') were very tripped out space rock, like reading a comic book whilst tripping on acid. Later albums are more 'traditional' song based, a rock out ('Powertrip', 'Monolthic Baby'). Try as much as you can, Dave Wyndorf is a frickin' genius.

Dirty Americans - sorta stoner meets The Guess Who. Some killer tunes.

The Workhorse Movement - tragically, they only made one record but it was a KILLER. Sabbath, AC/DC, reggae, soul, funk, all mixed into great tunes.

Doom:

Electric Wizzard - ultra bleak, ultra heavy. Not for the faint hearted.

Cathedral - as above, but better songs

Binnie, post some vids if you can as you go.

I've heard Superjudge, Dopethrone and Ethereal Mirror, been a long time since I heard them.

Workhorse Movement has a real interesting description!
