Randy Rhoads' last show was played on Thursday March 18, 1982 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum in Knoxville, Tennessee. On March 19, 1982, the band was headed to a festival in Orlando, Florida. After driving much of the night, they stopped on the property belonging to Jerry Calhoun, owner of "Florida Coach", in Leesburg, Florida. On it, there was a small airstrip lined with small helicopters and planes, and two houses. One belonged to the tour bus driver, Andrew Aycock, and the other was owned by Calhoun. Aycock talked the band's keyboardist, Don Airey, into taking a test flight in a '55 Beechcraft Bonanza F-35.

Rhoads wanted to take an aerial photo as one of his hobbies was photography. During the second flight, attempts were made to "buzz" the tour bus where the other band members were sleeping. They succeeded twice, but the third attempt was botched. The left wing clipped the back side of the tour bus, tore the fiberglass roof then sent the plane spiraling. The plane severed the top of a pine tree and crashed into the garage of a nearby mansion, bursting into flames. Rhoads was killed instantly, as were Aycock, 36, and Youngblood, 58. All three bodies were burned beyond recognition, and were identified by dental records. It was later revealed in an autopsy that Aycock's system showed traces of cocaine at the time; Rhoads' toxicology test revealed only nicotine. Rhoads was 25.

RIP Randy.
Every year flies by.
Just found out that my wife has seen gigs (not randy)
at the colliseum at Knoxville. Still the best guitarist
Ozzy had Solo..... No doubt.
I know a lot of people think he ripped off Eddie, but
Randy's solos had a more mystical "middle eastern"
or classical scale than eddies standard pentatonic blues
scales....
He seemed like a really cool dude too...
I cherish my Un-Sharoned copies of
Blizzard and Diary... Best Ozzy ever !

I never thought Randy sounded remotely like Eddie. In fact, two guitarists coming out of the same scene, both influenced heavily by classical music and 60's classic rock, arguably should have sounded MORE alike than they did.

Sharon should have been on that plane instead of Randy :(

Damn 1982 was a long time ago. Blizzard & Diary are still 2 of my favorite albums. I ranked Randy right behind Ed among my personal favorite guitar players.

randyrhoads.tk (http://www.randyrhoads.tk) is pretty much the best place for all your RR info. Diary of an Axe-man is pretty good to: Welcome to Diary of an Axeman (http://www.randy-rhoads.com/)

There is a memorial show at the Whiskey tonight in LA with a few Ozzy/Randy tribute bands playing.

RIP

The tab book of "Tribute" was my bible back in the day when I was learning to play.

Who knows how much we missed out on in the 25 years since?

Spinning through Blizzard & Diary at work right now.

I forgot about "You lookin at me looking at you". Pretty good solo. I remember first hearing that song on some of the early 1980 Bootlegs from the first UK tour since it was left off the original Blizzard release.

It changes all the time but right now my favorite track is "Over the Mountain". Such a good solo, plus a pretty good main riff. "Steal Away the Night" is another great one that is underrated when everyone just thinks of the hits off Blizzard.

Wore my copy of Tribute out back in the 80s. It is funny to listen to it now and compare it to the original Cleveland 81 show it was pulled from, quite a bit of studio help for Ozzy there....

Anyways it is just cool to see people remember Randy after all these years.

Just a week or so ago when I saw BLS/Zakk Wylde he did a nice little tribute. He played about a minute of Randy's "Spotlight" solo. Back in 2007 Zakk used to play a bit of "Diary of a Madman" on Acoustic as a tribute, that was cool.

Definitely, "Steal Away The Night" and "Revelation (Mother Earth)" are underrated. Amazing solos.

"Suicide Solution" deserves more than all the controversy surrounding it. Fine tribute to Bon Scott also.

Not to get off track from Randy, but a interest fact about that song:

Bob Daisley who wrote the lyrics to SS actually said the songs is about Ozzy's drinkin.

Ozzy was the one who later said the song was about Bon. Turns out Ozzy only came up with the line "Wine is fine, but Whiskeys quicker." Bob wrote the rest of the lyrics.

I guess I'll take whatever Ozzy says with a grain of salt. That is if I can actually understand what's coming out of his mouth.

Just listened to "Goodbye To Romance", amazing solo, a good track overall.

Bon and Ozzy used to drink a shitload together, so I guess
it could be argued that Suicide Solution was written
for both of them

I dived back heavy into Diary... and Blizzard... during the summer of this year.

Such a phenomenal talent - I can only imagine what it was like to hear "I Don't Know" for the first time... first Ozzy/Randy album, first song... and just be completely decimated by its riff and explosive solo, all in the context of a great song... absolutely killer stuff.

I also really love "Goodbye To Romance," especially the Bach-like synth melody at the end.

Another killer heavy track is "Little Dolls."

Oh yeah... me too. Forgot all about that book.

Good times. Thanks for the reminder!

I was given the Re-mastered "Tribute" CD for my birthday in 2002 and listened to it any chance I had.

Not my fault i was born in '89 lol.

Hearing you guys talk about the original, and being alive during such an era must've been something special.

Now that *was* weird...
And they were all so open about it, even Ozzy..
"Yeah, Randy fucked Sharon once in the back
of the tour bus..." WTF ?

Maybe Mrs Osbourne has a vagina that works
just like "The Pick of Destiny" and poor Randy
had to check the oil levels with his dipstick ??

In Rudy Sarzo's book, Off The Rails he says Randy never owned a stereo and rarely listened to any Rock...

Edward was the opposite and emulated his heros...

Randy had no heroes...

But Sharon shouldn't have been on that plane, she loved Randy...

Randy was a teacher before the Ozzy-gig, so I guess he picked up some more intricate pieces of theory and whatnot...

Plus, he was constantly taking lessons himself, even when on the road.

Agree. I could see Randy doing a lot of things similar to Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Eric Johnson and the likes. Wouldn't be selling out arenas, but would have full control over what he gets to play & record. What I find nearly sickening is how many people visit his grave with a guitar & portable amp so they can play an awful version of Crazy Train.....poor Randy. Several are posted on YouTube of course.

I remember an interview where Randy definitely cited Leslie West of Mountain as a big influence on his playing. Certainly not a mega star like Clapton or Hendrix, but it shows an appreciation for classic rock had to fit into the picture somewhere.

Not to mention the influences that were obvious in the Quiet Riot stuff. That wasn't all DuBrow's doing. Tell me they weren't listening to their Sweet albums when they wrote this....

I dunno. If you look at the writing credits for the past few studio albums, they really are sort of strange. Osbourne's name always comes first, followed in places by people that did not play a note on the album or by the name of a producer. Considering it was always Bob Daisley and before him, Geezer Butler writing his words, I wonder if Ozzy ever wrote a lyric for a single tune.

You have nailed it in one,

Tom Parker used to do the same thing with Elvis to make it look like Elvis was writing.

Any writers that would not comply (and there were none) would not get their song published or have it go on to sell a million etc.....
