E, I can not make out the headstock on the Paul McCartney bass. Is that the model that was sold at Musician's Friend a few years ago? I'm kicking myself for never picking one up, yet I heard that they had some considerable tuning problems. What has been your experience, which model is it and where did ya get it? Nice collection, by the way. The Strat looks remarkably like the one Joe Perry used when he first went solo with The Project all those years ago. And I'm diggin' the blue Rick!

The McCartney bass is an Epiphone from the mid 90's...

Stays in tune fine, but i'm pretty good at setting up guitars...

Not made in China...

The Blue Rick is an '82 4001 that is very rare, especially in lefty...

They were made in Midnight Blue and Red, both with all black hardware...

Notice I changed all the black hardware to chrome with vintage green tuners and I painted the pickguard with three colors of micro-fine metallic over an aluminum base color and it gives a neat prism effect in different light...

I also used metal pickguard rings that really changed the tone...

I think the metal resonates better than the cheap plastic...

But I cannot find an online store that sells them in the US...not even ebay...

But, i'm tellin' ya, this amp kicks with my Digitech Hendrix pedal in front! And even more so with my regular ADA MP1 setup...

I have my Epiphone Jr. pushing a Zakk Wylde mini angled Marshall cab with a 10'' Celestion and i'm about to hook both amps to my ADA setup and see what happens...

The only problem is the Peavey has much more gain than the Epiphone if you crank it, so i'm trying to locate an AT7 or AU7 - I know I have both hiding around here somewhere...

Yeah, it's an M3 i'm prety sure. I have the original manual and other papers that I thought were in the bench, but I just looked and they're not, but I have them...

I got if from the church I belong to...

The speakers in the "M" cab are the original JBL model K120's - 8ohm that kame in it new...

Didn't I post pics foy you a few rears ago ??

I think the speaker in the pic says 16 ohms, but I just took the handle off the side and they say...

There was one on ebay recently and the guy wanted like $2000 but it clearly had the newer Celestion T-75's...so I wrote him explaining it to him and he relisted it with a $500 opening bid...

About two years ago there was a really clean, all orginal '70 model with the JBL's and it sold for nearly $2500...

The cab counds great for just about anything. I run a '70 Ampeg B25B into it...

GAR

I am not sure the differences between the M3's and the ones I have which are M103 and the T503. I can only point out a few:

Jon Lord's in the "Deep Purple, Cal Jam 74" DVD looks like a chopped, M3 because when he solos, you can see the front of the spinet case has only one internal speaker, probably a 12, for a single channel internal Hammond amplifier. Which he probably removed, since the original grillecloth that spanned the entire case is gone and Jon had those wonderfully warm Leslie amps and cabs running mainly.

The M103 like I have and tried my hand at chopping, moving the whole tonewheel around and pulling the amps and reverbs, had 3 speakers which I removed and sold on ebay. I paid $30 off a thrift store for it, made $85 for the speakers so basically I'm clear plus 50 into it cashwise foolin with it.. but the case now is weaker from those 3 unsupported holes.

I think I have to start anew with a custom made case. You can't tell from the Cal Jam video if he left his speaker in, but trucking it around like that in 2 pieces for portability and the weight consideration I'd prefer to think he'd ditched the one speaker as I did with mine.

The T series Hammonds are the same spinets going back to the 50s, but in addition to a tonewheel and builtin amp, they got a drum percussion machine, some wierd reiteration circuit kinda like a chorus or chorale, and a cassette player.

You sometimes see cassettes in player pianos of the seventies, but the Hammond t series cassettes somehow recorded and could play back thru the headphone jack.

Check and see if yours had a headphone jack, you have to get on your back and look underneath the keyboard to find it, there may be a paper tag locating it printed with the words "practice jack"

BTW my internal speakers were 12 inch Altecs, but not the cool alnico ones, ceramic mags only.

ELVIS
04-16-2009, 05:57 AM
I just looked. No Jack. Just the normal start and run switches...

It has the original single 12 inck speaker that sounds killer with guitar running into it. Real punchy and loud. The grill cloth looks new...

Back when there wasn't so many guitars and amps stacked on it, my brother and I connected anything we could think of into it. If I remember correctly, the amp has like a screw terminal aux input. Either that or we disconnected the keyboard input...

But it is an M3 with the optional percussion module. It has no reverb, just chorus and vibrato. But it has THE SOUND! I grew up around these things and some later models sound like crap. Mine is circa 1954 near as I can tell and sounds similar to my grandmother's B-3 Concert...

I just got an M-Audio firewire solo, and I was planning to run the Hammond into my Scholz Power Soak, then through my guitar setup and into the M Box...

And while you have me on this topic, i'm gonna order some Hammond oil right now!

They're not much by and of themselves. They don't have the lower octave because the tonewheel would have to be longer for additional lower note cogs to spin on.

There's a "foldback" trick you can do with these to get the lower notes with a Boss OC-2 octave pedal, and a key-clack defiltering mod to add a bit of contact noise making it sound closer to a real B3 which is really cool.

My plan was to run the out thru a halfstack, and have a signal loop to add guitar effects products like digital reverb, phasers and delays.

The leslie amplifier was el84 based, but you could get a better amp sound in a more compact form factor with a guitar amp like a modded Valve jr. into some kind of Celestion speaker.

The stock Hammond internal amps sucks, they are way clean, and too low power for what components they got. Mr. Hammond was known for wanting things done precision, and harmonic distortion in his amp lab was undesirable.

Electro Music of Pasadena, who made the original Leslies, were very thankful of that!

My serial tag is somewhere off the cab, with the screws and other parts waiting to be reloaded with the tonewheel after the chop project is finished.

I won't post pics of my gear, but I will post pics of this when I get it together for you.

I got a few projects in storage coming out in the next month to finish up, as I keep getting rid of stuff I dont need I can get in there.

I also have an old Sears Silvertone Thomas Organ chop.. same story, sold off the two 12's in it then before the rains came I took a circular saw and cut off the cabinet from the keybed after moving the power supply wires around.

Some trashy organ sounds you can only get from these old spinets but you don't need the whole cabinet!

Did you know "Dont Get Fooled Again" was a primitive sequencer pulsing a Hammond spinet while Pete pulled the drawbars in and out for a phased tone effect?

ELVIS
04-16-2009, 07:27 AM
Cool!

I just want mine to double a bit of guitar rhythm here and there and whatever else pops into my mind. I'm not a good keyboard player, but I can play my own stuff fairly well...

But mine seems to have that classic Hammond key clack, and one way or another I plan to run it into my guitar preamp or maybe one of a handful of 5 watt amps...

I'm tellin' ya Gar, This 5 watt Peavey Nano combo class A amp cranks! Makes my Epi Jr (bone stock) sound like a muddy mess. And it's whisper quiet...

If its that clean, I have to look into this then!

I'm not a bluesy organ player either but to have a real tonewheel organ around is enough to motivate me to practice the hannon and hand exercises again, and aspire to get better.

There's nothing like a screaming Hammond going off thru a Marshall.. I like the Leslie spinning sound too, but damn ain't they the bulkiest of equipment to have around if you don't have space?

http://i6.ebayimg.com/05/i/001/41/63/8167_1.JPG

I would focus instead on replacing the speakers and amp with a solidstate preamp setup you can run modern amps and effects with. The weight savings as a result will be almost 80 pounds and as you know that amplifier is about as musical as a boat anchor.

Since you're in Louisiana, maybe you can offer it to the locals there at dockside, the amplfier as a boat anchor. However, the power supply and output tranny together get about $80 bucks on ebay, the tubes about $50 and if they're Telefunken EL84s, and EL86 then you'll got an extra $50 there but don't give up the preamp tubes. Keep em.

One thing you could do to tighten up your tens for more brilliance is, take them out and dust them off with a soft paintbrush or something, rag the dust off it, and cover the voicecoil cap with a soda lid and then lightly spray clear Bullseye Shellac on the cone, and touch up any breaks in the edges with white Elmers glue. Then lightly dust the cone for color with flat black spray, 99 cents at Home Depot. That cheap stuff reeks, but it dyes the paper cone black again really well.

The shellac will restiffen the cone but avoid the edges, you need them to flex and that paper is some fragile stuff if theyre the orginal Altec 10's

ELVIS
04-16-2009, 06:47 PM
No, actually I was thinking of that 10" Celestion for the Peavey 5watt combo or my Champ...I just realized the speaker in the Peavey is an 8"

All the speakers in my cabs are like new as is the speaker in the organ...

The only amp I have that is in dire need of a speaker is my blackface Champ...any suggestions ??

Both the peavey and the Champ sound similar when plugged into my Orange Marshall cab with Greenbacks. Do the same with the Epi Pro (yeah right) Jr. and it farts out...

But I have done the trick of spraying cones, but I used DupliColor satin lacquer...

Two that I did have lasted 18 years so far and look new. The Duplicolor never gets super hard and if you use satin, you can't even detect it...

But i don't plan on taking the Hammond anywhere and i'm counting six amps setting around it as well as my guitar preamps and effects, so i should have no problem getting some sounds...

Using the legendary AlNiCo type speaker magnet, this speaker is the heart and soul of smaller vintage combos and studio amps. This is a great replacement for most Fender® Champs.

Please note:The P8R depth is 104.5mm = 4.11" and may not fit in all Champ models.

The P8R has a warm clean tone with emphasis on the highs. It responds to overdrive distortion with a warm and bright fuzz lead voice.

I would try to find an 8 or a 10 inch Altec or University (made by Altec for pa systems and home stereo) or if you can, a rare Stephens Trusonic 8.

Nobody knows the history of the Trusonic. I had a cab with originals labeled as Standel. These had ungodly sensitivity, more than my whiteframed Altecs and with huger alnico magnets.

If you're in a pinch, the cheaper alnico Oaktron 6 and 8 inches break up pretty good, but you gotta get a mid-70's or older one for a decent range, and they all vary in quality and sound as they weren't designed for musical instrument application they were for playback and voice system useage such as T-bar ceiling installations.

GAR
04-17-2009, 08:52 PM
I don't really trust Celestion Vintage when it says "60 watt" rating when the originals were about 10 or 12 watts.

I had a 4x10 cab loaded with experimental Rola's from the big parking lot sale given when Electro Music (Leslie) went out of business and sold off a huge lot of manufacture samples, Rola USAs are really good. A really light cone.

Sometimes I've gotten thrift store speakers from old Magnavox consoles, the huge 6 foot suckers you gut for parts then bust up into a pile of firewood for the curb? They're great sources for all sizes of speakers: 4's, 5's, 6x9's, tens and even 12's and low-wattage 15's from time to time.

For 10 to $40 dollars, you get a tube chassis half the time you can resell the transformers - usually Hammond and Triad - a grip of tubes, and handfulls of screws for later projects.

Hey don't laugh, everytime I have to replace a set of screws for a speaker cab, it's 99 cents per 4 pcs in those Home Depot bags, they're not cheap anymore.. even when you buy them in the 100 pack they're $6.99.. they come in handy, and you never know when or what for if you're industrious.
