Always loved the first Maiden album, nothing they've done tops that.

That's not only the best Maiden album but one of the best albums ever. Better than any Zep crappola.

Personally, I prefer Bruce Dickinson in Maiden.
            Apparently Maiden did too....

I reckon Beast was better than Killers, too...

              Bollocks on both counts.

It's a damn fine record, but Maiden hit their career high between 'No. Of th Beast' and 'Powerslave'.

As for 'Zep crappola', get real. I'm betting Jimmy Page lies awake at night cursing himself for not writing 'Rio'.......

As a solo artsit, I've always thought that D'iano was solid rather than spectacular....

I like a lot of the songs Dianno did with Maiden. Some really classic songs.

                  Remember Tommorrow
                  Phantom ot Opera
                  Murders in the RM
                  Wrathchild
                  Sanctuary
                  Prowler

BUT, I will agree with Binnie, Maiden was better with Bruce D.

I also think NOTB, PoM and SIT are better then the first 2 with Dianno. Live after Death from Long Beach 85 was also a classic for the ages on both record and VHS.

As for Dianno's solo career...... I didn't really follow it, nor did hardly anyone else. Average, not great.

This thread doesn't have anything to do with the Duran Duran's light pop, so we can leave them out of it.

The DiAnno years had something kinda special that later Maiden didn't have, but I'll say it for the millionth time. I love ALL eras of Maiden. Best band EVER!!!

He was the right fit for Maiden at that time.

He sounds like shit these days though. I caught him a while back, half the set he sounded like he was trying to rap the old Maiden songs which really didn't work.

To his credit though, he has admitted that Maiden could not have achieved what they did if he'd stayed (that takes guts to say that)

Yeah...Paul's voice is basically shot and he knows it...that whole "death metal growl" thing he's trying to insert into songs just doesn't work for him either.

He's an interesting story and his solo career is just kinda all over the place - everything from Survivoresque AOR to Pantera-isms and all points in between.

He tried launching a U.S. tour a while back, even got as far as announcing dates - guess he forgot that the U.S. doesn't take kindly to granting work visas to ex cons, lol...

That Rio punchline's getting old ...

But I would think if Page has any conscience he would think of how he could be taking credit for all those songs he didn't write. Also the early albums are just simple blues ditties, but they are often elevated to being something like art.

What the first 2 Maiden albums had was comparable to something like Rocky I as opposed to the Bruce stuff which is a bit like Rocky 2-5. Now they're stuck at Rocky 6. Dianno has that menace and fury and Harris and the whole band did too. Then came Bruce and the band had grown more comfortable, recording in the Bahamas and singing about Icarus and Alexander. I don't think the Bruce era's moment really arrived till 7th son. Blaze had that in common with Dianno too and the whole band were also sort of on the brink and had that hunger...

His performance varies ... but he generally hits the high notes better than Brutus.

This wasn't a Maiden discussion anyway... check out those vids in the first post, he was great atleast at that stage of his career with Battlezone and Killers.
