The Western Conference Teams will be known after Saturday nights games...

Also, on Tuesday is the lottery for the Draft, basically who will get John Tavares.

Here is a list of teams, and their chances of obtaining the 1st overall pick.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team % To Get No.1 Possible Pick
New York Islanders 48.1 C John Tavares
Tampa Bay Lightning 18.8 D Victor Hedman
Colorado Avalanche 14.2 C Matt Duchene
Atlanta Thrashers 10.7 C Evander Kane
Phoenix Coyotes 8.1 C Brayden Schenn

I love how the Leafs couldn't even learn to throw enough games to be in the running for Tavares.

Another 50 years of misery ahead, even with Burke at the helm...

This is the time of the year I get most giddy about the Leafs. Sure, its the 4th year without postseason, (the last time they were in they were eliminated on my bday in 2004, terrible day lol) but Im excited to see who we draft, and if Burke can work his magic and maybe land a top 4 pick, and maybe sign some notable Free Agents (Cammaleri, Sedins...) then we are looking at POSSIBLY 8th spot next year . Wishful thinking I guess...

America has won 38 cups, CANADA has won 41. Not bad for only 8 Canadian teams.

Sharks have the #1 seed and home ice, but they ended up with the Ducks in the first round. Not the best matchup as the Duck are still very physical.

Cory Perry is public enemy #1 here in NorCal. I hope they put a hurting on him and the rest of the Ducks.

Sharks need to get rid of past playoff demons and step up during the spring.

The Sharks have an edge in net with Nabby over Hiller. The Ducks do have Giggy to step in if needed.

+++++++++++++++

I am also very interested in Philly/Pittsburgh. That should be a WAR right out of the gate. I would guess it goes to 7. Whoever wins that one might be limping into the 2nd round.

+++++++++

Also rooting for the Blue Jackets for at least the first round. I hope they get a big upset on the Wings. It is pretty unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Maybe Osgood & Conklin go in the tank.

Agree with you AP5151. This is the Sharks to lose.

IF there is going to be an upset in the first round, who are you guys leaning towards?

COLUMBUS over Detroit
ST. LOUIS over Vancouver
MONTREAL over Boston
RANGERS over Capitals

I think Tortorella can get the Rangers going and use Avery and Lundqvists as HUGE factors. Tortorella has won it all before, he knows how to motivate his guys, even if theyre going up against a guy like Ovechkin. Its time for the big-money players (Drury, Gomez, especially Redden) to step up and deliver. Theodore is also another weak spot for the Caps, but they still have that young, fast-paced puck moving team that can be deadly.

Just as last year's Caps-Flyers was hyped up, with everyone writing off the Flyers (except me lol), the Rangers will use their experience to shut down the Caps.

Rangers in 6.

Brian Burke pulled no punches at his season-ending press conference Tuesday: The Maple Leafs want John Tavares.

"Once the lottery determines who will pick where, we will actively pursue a trade to move up," said Burke.

Asked if it was the No. 1 selection overall, Burke's reply: "Yes."

Asked if Tavares is the player he is after: "Yes."

In a candid session with the media, Burke reiterated his goal is for the club to make the playoffs next year.

Regarding the Pens & Flyers......

I have been pretty dissapointed with the Flyers play the last week or so. They really had a chance to wrap up the 4 seed to get home ice for at least this first round.

Like I mentioned earlier, I can see this going 7....but the wrong team (Pens)could likely win........

I know Richards & Carter are going to show up big, hell even Giroux has really helped the 3rd line. Tough part will be if the Flyers D shows up enough to stop Crosby & Malkins lines. Kimmo is solid, but Coburn, Parent, Jones and Alberts are all either battling injury or slumps in play.

Times like these I wish Keith Primeau was still around. Having a big Center that could wear down Malkin or Crosby over a 7 game series would be huge.

I would say the Goaltending battle is a toss-up. both goalies played well for most of the playoffs last year. Biron and MAF both battled rough spots early, but have played well lately. Slight edge to MAF.

What do you Pens fans think about Guerin? I remember him coming up way short in his playoff run with the Sharks a few years back.

Pennypacker
04-15-2009, 03:04 PM
The Flyers can score pretty much goal-for-goal with the best teams in the league, so goals shouldn't be a problem in the post-season. Jeff Carter has emerged as one of the most consistent snipers in the league while Mike Richards, Simon Gagne, Scott Hartnell, Joffrey Lupul, Mike Knuble and youngster Claude Giroux represent a solid supporting cast. A healthy Danny Briere could be the man to push the team over the top.

Based on their statistics, there really isn't much separating Martin Biron, who'll likely be the playoff starter, from Antero Niitymaki. The truth of the matter is neither offers up a whole lot of confidence. Biron played quite well for spurts last season in the playoffs, but ultimately wasn't up to the task.

After Crosby and Malkin there is a significant drop in bona fide scoring, although the addition of Chris Kunitz at the trade deadline has been a godsend. Jordan Staal can also contribute, but in the playoffs he'll probably be more of a defensive presence. A lack of production from the blueline is a concern.

The big problem with the Penguins is they allow nearly as many goals as they score. Having Sergei Gonchar back in the lineup has helped give the defence an identity that it lacked for most of the year. It will be interesting to see if the playoff experience the likes of Hal Gil, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang gained last season pays off this year.

If Carey Price can stand on his head and steal games, and the D can fill in while Markov's on the shelf, it should be an interesting series.

If anything, Gainey should've been fired, not Carbonneau.

I didn't know you blogged over at KK. I don't stop by there very often, But I always enjoyed it when Kukla would expose Eklund for the Fraud he was.

++++++++++++

Yeah, if you go to KK and search for the tag "Dwayne", he's got several great articles there...

IRT Guerin, both he and Kunitz have been great for Crosby on that line.... They've both got good hands and throw their body around at will, giving more open ice for Sid.... He's been great so far...

Wow, did the Flyers look sloppy in both ends of the ice! My prediction stays the same, as well as the Rangers. Why does everyone have a hard on for the Caps-Ovechkin come playoff time?

Im really anticipating tonights Habs-Bruins to be a bloodfest. Laraque calling out Thornton, I fuckin love it!

Alright we finally get to head out WEST for the Battle of California.

Suprisingly the Sharks & Ducks have never met in the playoffs so this heated rivalry is about to go to the next level.

The Sharks lines from practice are what we will probably see on the opening faceoff.

Marleau-Thornton-Setoguchi
Michalek-Pavelski-Clowe
Moen-Goc-Cheechoo
Shelley-Roenick-Grier

Nabokov in net for the Sharks. Probably Hiller in net for the Ducks.

If the Sharks can shut down the Ducks top line of Getzlaf, Perry & Ryan this could be a short series. The Ducks don't have much secondary scoring anymore.

The Sharks problem in the past has been timely scoring in the playoffs, they will need to right that ship as there will probably be far less penalties in the Playoffs and you can't count on your PP.

Go Sharks!

Did you watch much of that game? Ovechkin was the best player on the ice. Scoring, shooting, hitting.

Only problem was Jose Theodore played like ASS. He fucking sucked. Not sure why he even wore a glove as he didn't even hardly use it. Even a halfway decent performance in net would have got the Caps a win or at least got it to OT.

Caps have serious problems in net right now.

DAMMMMNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!

Sharks hit iron twice late in the 3rd with the game at 1-0. Sometimes it is a game of inches.

Tough loss, but the Sharks fell short on the Power Play. They went 0 for 6 with the man advantage. You need to bury at least 1 of those.

Very dissapointing, but with a 7 game series they are far from out of it. Back in SJ on Sunday night. Hopefully they can stay loose and not get rattled by the pressure. If they come out tight in Game 2 it will be over heading back to SoCal for Game 3.

I just can't figure out why anyone thought the Sharks would be any different this year.

Hockey isn't like basketball where the home team gets all the calls. You actually have to earn each victory by giving it your all.

San Jose hasn't shown they are willing to. Most overated team despite their regular season record

BIG slate of games on tonight. A few are in the MUST win category.

Sharks have to come out strong on the road in SoCal. Beat the Ducks at their own game and start hitting. No more laid back play. Also wouldn't hurt to get the PP going. In other words....GO to the Fuckin net!

Maybe some more changes with the forwards. They still rolled these lines at practice:

Thornton-Roenick-Cheechoo
Michalek-Pavelski-Clowe
Moen-Marleau-Setoguchi
Grier-Goc-Lemieux

Nabokov v Hiller in net.

No local tv tonight so we have to watch the game on VS.

BOTTOM line is the stars have to play like stars. Either Jumbo Joe shows up tonight or the Sharks are done.

Great game in SoCal Last night.

Sharks kept fighting to take the lead, then the Ducks would come back. Hard fought game by both teams.

Great goal to win it at 4-3 by the Captain. The Power Play was also finally clicking. Also of note was the Dmen steping up into the play, Boyle had 2 goals & Blake had 1.

The Ducks 3rd goal was almost a killer. Little Joe P threw a blind pass right up the middle that Pronger picked off and blasted in. I was ready to start breaking stuff.

If they can win on Thursday this is a whole new series. Only problem will be that whatever team survives will be drained for the 2nd round.

If they can win on Thursday this is a whole new series. Only problem will be that whatever team survives will be drained for the 2nd round.

;)Or the 3rd round.....LOL

yup...saw the WIZ score for the Ducks...1st career playoff goal...good guy...he played for the PLYMOUTH WHALERS when I worked there....

I didn't catch the game last night, or even the highlights this morning. I guess you just summed up the game for me.

I was pissed that CBC started showing Pit/Phi at 7, then switched coverage to Van/StL. I watched the rest of the Canucks game, but I wasn't in the mood to stay up (damn 10:30 EST start) and watch what I already knew was going to happen: Sharks victory of course :baaa:.

I hope Luongo and Sundin will one day lift the cup, but I hope that scumbag Wellwood never gets his mitts near the Holy Grail of Hockey. Let the Sedin sisters experience it too, so when they come to Toronto after July 1st, theyll be able to experience it again next season :biggrin::biggrin:

Vancouver may be Canada's last chance at the Cup this year, Habs are playing typical Habs hockey, and the Flames will have a tough time beating the young "inexperienced" Hawks.

Im going with STEVE MASON. Incredible numbers, he, along with Hitchcock are what brought Columbus to its first playoff birth.

33 Wins, 10 Shutouts, 2.29 GAA

Ryan's 31 goals in 64 games is incredible. But he plays for the Ducks who have a bunch of stars, who were not in a similar situation as Columbus.

Another NHL team in T.O.?

The National Hockey League has met with an unidentified business group to discuss the possibility of adding another NHL team to the Greater Toronto Area, according to a newspaper report on Thursday.

Sources told the Globe and Mail that the group met with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly in downtown Toronto last week with a proposal that included building an arena just north of the city, at the intersection of Highways 427 and 7 in Vaughan, ON.

The group -- which has also discussed its proposal with Paul Kelly, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association -- presented its own market research stating that a second team located in northern Toronto would not impact the revenues of either the Toronto Maple Leafs or Buffalo Sabres. According to the source, Daly told the group that the NHL is "not currently considering expansion nor do we have any intention or desire to relocate an existing franchise."

The group, however, is taking a long-term view, looking to add a team likely in the three-to-five year range, giving them enough time to build an arena as well as settle any territorial-rights fees for the Leafs and Sabres.

The total cost to bring a new franchise to Toronto could be upwards of $800-million.

One NHL owner told the paper that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has been "toying with the idea" of a second franchise in Toronto but would want to open it up to all parties in order to attract the highest bidder.

Should relocation be considered, the obvious choice for a move is the Phoenix Coyotes. The NHL had to step in to help the cash-strapped franchise stay afloat for the 2008-09 season. The Coyotes had an estimated loss of $35-million (U.S.) this year.

Damn that Calgary/Chicago game was a wild one. Pretty fun when they tied it up at 4-4. I was sending out a few texts to some Flames fans I know to talk shit. To bad Nystrom & Iggy showed up in the 3rd...lol!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Bs game was what we expected. Habs come out strong early, Bs finish them off with some timely scoring.

I am not sure if Kessel was offsides, I just watched it once, looked like a "bang, bang" play as he was coming out of the box.

Krejci was excellent as well, where did they find that guy?

How did you guys like Lucic last night. Another example of how PIMs can mean something to the overall game. 1 pt & 7 pims for Milan. Plus a fight win over Komisarek. Notice how Mike K got fustrated and later(3rd period) tried to get some cheap revenge only to get tossed.

+++++++++++++++++

Caps threw everything but the kitchen sink at King Henrik, but he was in the zone. That is how you step up and play when it is playoff time.

Ovechkin is just electric this series. I swear he gets 10+ shots on net every game. Showboating aside, he is just fun to watch.

Also got to give some props to rookie goalie Varlamov. He has played really well in a tough situation. I would bet he is starting in Washington next year. I think we can pencil the Caps in the playoffs for the next couple years, bad news for everyone else in the East.

Also what did you guys think about the whole "Bronx Cheer" for Price when he made the easy save in the 3rd. He looked pissed and did the Patrick Roy 2 arms up in the air. Notice all the highlight shows played the Roy/Detroit 1995 clip about 100 times last night.

Pretty tough of the MTL crowd. Price is still pretty young, so that was just salting the wounds so to speak. He went from "Jesus Price" to playoff goat in just a few months. Something like 0-7 down the stretch & 0-4 in the playoffs.

I pains me to say it...but..........SAME old Sharks in the playoffs.

Another shut out by the Ducks. The PP went cold again. The Sharks couldn't stop the Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan line at all in the 2nd & 3rd period.

Joe Thornton was a -3 in one of the biggest games of the season. Rob Blake was also a -3.

Somebody better step up in Game 5 or it is lights out.

If not I think Doug Wilson (Sharks GM) blows up the core in the off season. BUT I mean fuck, who blows up a team with 100+ points? Do they stay the course with the new coach or do you make wholesale changes...ie trading Thornton, Nabokov, Cheechoo & Marleau?

HELL at least the last few years they got to the 2nd round.............

The last couple seasons they thought it was Ron Wilsons fault, I guess we see where the problem actually lies.

Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not much to say other then the Sharks weren't ready for "PLAYOFF" hockey. The Ducks were about the worst possible 1st round matchup, but really it didn't matter. If the seeding was different, they would have gotten by CBUS or STL then lost to somebody else in the 2nd round.

Ownership has to look deep this off-season to see if they are going to stay with this CORE group or not. They also need to look at the GM Doug Wilson as well. He has put together some great teams, but for some reason or another it is just not enough come playoff time.

I guess I will have to support the "Other" California team now since they took out the Sharks.

Good luck to everyone that still has teams in it.

Bad call, but the refs are told if they lose sight of the puck they should whistle the play dead.

And it's not when the whistle sounds, but when the ref decided to blow it...another misconception about the rule.

The ref was fooled by the goalie being motionless and assuming he had it trapped.

Still only one vote for the Canucks? Ok...

I did waste my vote on the Sharks, but if I had to pick now, it would be too hard. The Canes are a big surprise, Ducks are looking to put a strangle hold on the Wings tonight, Caps can go back to Washington up 3-1, and I think the Hawks will bounce back tonight and go back to BC 2-2.

This is the playoffs, anything can happen.

Capitals really sucked in this game. Horrible giveaways and decisions. Poor defensive play. Green has to be injured, he plays so bad and doesn't shoot at all.

We need a little shuffle...otherwise the more experienced Pens are going to win this one.

In terms of the knee-to-knee, nothing will happen, everyone knows it...

But I have a feeling tonight's Game Five will be extremely chippy...

Well the better team won in the Canucks Hawks series.

BUT...really questionable calls. Uncalled head-hunting shot on Kesler should have been 5 and a game and was uncalled. Just crazy. And then it is followed by a dive a few minutes later and a call against the Nucks.

Guys just falling on Luongo all game long with a token call later in the game when they should have called it right away and stopped it.

Great hockey this year and by far the best of all sports right now in the playoffs

I told everyone the Crapitals werent going anywhere because Jose Theodore was garbage, and Varlamov....what the hell has Varlamov proven??

People told me, "oh if the rookie goalie gets hot, they can go all the way, and besides, they have Ovechkin"

And I said, the inexperience will catch up with them, and the pressure in these big games will throw them off. Just what happened last year against the Flyers.

And it has, 4-0 Pens early 2nd.

kwame,

I understand that the Red Wings are the most complete team in hockey. Looking at the roster scares the shit out of me. However, I've gotten tired of their dominance the last 11 years, and want to see some new teams compete in the finals. Plus, they cannot tie my Leafs for 2nd in Cup wins ;). It's unacceptable. Here's to a Bruins-Blackhawks final lol!! :guzzle:

I was in Raleigh for Game Three, what a great time !! About 3,000 Pens fans enjoyed the hell out of the Pens' 6-2 win....

J/K on the groan !!!

3rd round is a bit of a let down compared to the close series in the 2nd round. We got spolied with three 7 games series.

Looks like both the Pens and Wings will close this out shortly.

For us old guys it kind of reminds you of 83 & 84 when the Oil & Isles played in the Finals 2 years in a row. The dynasty vs the young guns.

I will be rooting for the Pens I guess since I don't want to see the Wings win again.....lol...

But you still have to have a lot of respect for the 10+ year run that the Wings have put together. Put damn, it is time for someone else.

Where is VON with some Hate for the Wings whne you need him......

Some sad news......

Peter Zezel passes away

Popular ex-Leaf dies of blood-related problems at age 44

Former Maple Leaf Peter Zezel passed away this afternoon at a Toronto hospital following complications from a long-time blood disorder. He was 44.

In a statement released through the NHL Players Association, Zezel’s family said:

“Peter will forever be remembered as a great teammate and a wonderful individual, who touched the lives of many both on and off the ice.

“In his typical character of generosity, Peter has donated his organs through the Trillium Gift of Life Network. We would like to thank all of Peter’s friends and family for their support and we ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Zezel played 15 years in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, Leafs, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks, covering 873 regular season games, with 219 goals and 389 assists.

Upon retiring in 1999, the Toronto-born Zezel remained active running a successful hockey school, coaching in the Greater Toronto Hockey League with the Don Mills Hockey Association and working with the Canadian Multicultural Hockey League.

He was also an active member of the NHL Alumni Association and donated much of his time to charitable work.

“The hockey community has suffered a great loss today,” said Glenn Healy, director of player affairs for the NHLPA. “Peter was a friend and a great family man who was well liked by everyone he crossed paths with in our game. Our thoughts are with Peter’s family and many friends during this difficult time.”

Zezel, who has suffered from the rare disorder hemolytic anemia, developed complications from surgery a few days ago and had been on life support.

A pretty good first period though both Fleury and Osgood gave up weak goals. I got to give credit to the Penguins though, at least they managed to score a goal in the first two games this year.

Boy, the Wings sure kicked Pittsburgh's ass last night. It was probably the first time the Wings showed up all series. That being said, I fully expect Pittsburgh to come out with their best game Tuesday night.

WOW what a game!! What a series!!

The Penguins never led the series until the end! The mighty Red Wings stunned on their home ice! Malkin takes the MVP trophy!

Now the Stanely Cup and the Lombardi Trophy are BOTH in Pittsburgh, and along with the The Commissioner's Trophy all 3 now rest in the great State of Pennsylvania.

I guess that is why they play they game........

Close action, drama, the cross bar in the 3rd, MAF making a couple saves with under 5 seconsd left.

Huge game from Mad Max and MAF. Staal was also great in the shut down role. 6 pack of "Iron City Beer" for each of them.

Looked like Crosby hurt his knee pretty bad. No way he would only take 1 more shift in the 3rd if it wasn't bad, especially in a Game 7.
As we saw it was a total team effort.

Just glad the Wings lost. I wouldn't worry Wings fans. The Wings will be back to challenge next year, and the year after that, and after that.....

What an awesome series. Great call for Sid to take one shift and be there on the bench if for nothing else than intimidation and a little bit of a head game.

As much as I like Luongo, I would have to say I would feel better with Fleury in net for 2010.

He played out of his mind when it counted. Nice to see the Pens get back to the top.
