Somali pirates killed, American captain rescued

Capt. Richard Phillips jumps overboard but is pulled back by his captors, officials say. Military officials at the scene are attempting to keep other vessels away.

    April 10, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- The American captain of a cargo ship who is being held captive by Somali pirates on a lifeboat tried to escape by jumping overboard but was recaptured a short time later, a U.S. official said today.

Capt. Richard Phillips, who was taken by the pirates on Wednesday in a failed effort to seize the Maersk Alabama, jumped out of the lifeboat and attempted to swim to safety. He may have been trying to reach one of the nearby U.S. Navy ships keeping watch.

Officials said they had heard, but could not confirm, reports that one of his captors jumped into the water after him, and that Phillips was pulled back into the lifeboat.

U.S. military officials on the scene observed him moving about on the lifeboat after he was recaptured, and he appeared to be unharmed.

The official also said that reports of dozens of other pirate ships approaching the lifeboat was an "overstatement," although officials did not dispute that some vessels had left Somali ports.

Keeping other pirate vessels away from the craft is key to the U.S. strategy. Defense officials believe their negotiating position will grow stronger as the pirates run low on supplies. Officials will probably try to prevent the pirates from moving to another vessel or halt any ship from re-supplying the lifeboat.

There are now two large naval vessels in the area, the destroyer Bainbridge and the frigate Halliburton. But the Navy did not appear to have a smaller boat in the water near the lifeboat at the time of the escape.

Bryan G. Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman, declined to answer questions about the escape attempt or confirm that it occurred. Asked why the Navy had not had smaller boats in the water to assist the captain during the rescue attempt, Whitman said that was an "oversimplification."

"People can second-guess the activities task force out there, but this is a vast body of water," Whitman said. "To operate in those waters and to be able to maneuver around, you need vessels that can move distances and have staying power."

France frees yacht off Somalia, hostage killed
Four other captives, including a child, are saved, officials say

PARIS - France's navy stormed a French sailboat held by pirates off the Somali coast Friday in an assault triggered by threats the passengers would be executed, but one hostage was killed in the operation, French Defense Minister Herve Morin said.

Two pirates also were killed. Four hostages, including a small child, were freed.

In a break with French government policy, authorities proposed a ransom but the pirates rejected the offer, Morin said. Three pirates were taken prisoner.

A grim-faced Morin said that "negotiations were leading nowhere, and the boat was approaching the coast." He said French President Nicolas Sarkozy gave the order to attack.

    Dead hostage was boat's owner
The four remaining hostages, including the child, were being taken by French authorities to Djibouti. The dead hostage was identified as Florent Lemacon, the owner of the boat, the Tanit, and father of the family, the defense minister said.

The assault on the sailboat came as piracy cases continued to play out in the region. Pirates threatened to kill an American cargo ship captain held hostage by four Somali pirates after he jumped in the water Friday in a desperate attempt to escape.

In another case, a Norwegian tanker was released Friday some two weeks after it was seized by armed pirates off the Somali coast. All 27 of its crew were unhurt, the ship's owner said. The Norwegian shipowner Salhus Shipping AS refused to say whether any ransom had been paid.

Pirates had seized the French sailboat, the Tanit, last Saturday.

The rescue operation did not appear to be in any proximity to the current standoff involving an American captain being held hostage.

It was the third time the French have freed hostages from the hands of pirates but the first time a hostage had been killed.

Sarkozy's office said the death the hostage came at the end of a two-day ordeal in waters where the seizure of vessels by Somali pirates has become a common occurrence.

"During the operation, a hostage was unfortunately killed," the statement said adding that the four other hostages, including the child, were "safe and sound."

    French policy on pirates
France's policy is to refuse to accept acts of piracy and avoid having French citizens taken ashore as hostages, the statement said.

The operation began Thursday when a Navy vessel contacted the pirates and "immobilized" the Tanit, it said.

"Negotiations were started to persuade the pirates to give up their criminal undertaking," said the statement.

"Today, threats were more precise, with the pirates refusing proposals and the Tanit moving toward the coast. An operation to free the hostages was decided."

The passengers in the Tanit, a tourist boat, had repeatedly been warned to avoid the dangerous waters around Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

The boat, a Norwegian-made 14.5-meter (47.57-foot) sailboat with a single mast, was heading for the coast of Kenya when it was seized. The owners, Florent and Chloe Lemacon, had left the French port of Vanves in Brittany in July 2009 on an adventure with their three-year-old son, according to their blog. Two friends had joined them along the way.

Why in the hell doesn't the shipping companies arm the crews? They can trust the captain and crew with hazardouse cargo and millions of dollars worth of goods and a ship. Gee. I would think you could trust them with some heavy machine guns and assult rifles to protect themselves and the ship. The US Navy can't police the world and piracy is only going to get worse.

Piracy is what led to the formation of the US Navy...

The ship in question flew the US flag but is actually from a european country, I believe...

There were 42 vessels and 815 hostages reported last year...

Many go unreported due to high insurance costs...

It's not that easy. A lot of foreign and even most domestic U.S. ports will not allow a ship to dock if it is commercial and armed. It's like traveling by land or air in that you have to go through customs and even on the seas time is money and having to claim firepower will only slow them down.

                          A interesting little twist...

The destroyer involved is the USS Bainbridge, which is named after William Bainbridge.
An American naval officer who fought pirates off the Barbary Coast in the early 19th century.
