One of the all time greatest bands. At least until 1978. After that... moments of greatness, but never the same :(

Worthy of a tribute thread for the good years though. And The Who was known for stealing the show when they shared the bill with other bands. They even upstaged the Stones at their own Rock N Roll Circus..........

Have you ever heard that Leslie West was asked to play the lead on "Won't Get Fooled Again"? Is there any truth to that?

First I've heard of that. Can't imagine anybody other than Townsend playing lead on a Who song.

Moon was the Heart
Townsend was the Brain
Entwhistle was the Spine
and Daltrey was the voice...

Too bad they still tour as "The Who" without their
heart and spine....

Despite the

:deadhorse:

The Who were fucking awesome. Townsend is a brilliant composer,
I guess all the afficiando's will know how much he agonized over Tommy
and literally had a mental breakdown due to it.. The movie sucks (IMHO)
but the soundtrack is good stuff. Pete said he wouldnt attempt
to write another Rock Opera after Tommy, but you still hear
that structure in later tunes. I wasnt dissin the Who with last
post, just reinforcing what FORD said, when the 4 were there,
it was the planets aligning... Keith Moon .... What a Rockstar !

...Have you ever heard that Leslie West was asked to play the lead on "Won't Get Fooled Again"? Is there any truth to that?

Initial recording for Who's Next was done in New York with Al Kooper. These tracks were abandoned and rerecorded in England. (A handful of these tracks turned up on the last CD reissue.) As a result due to proximity (his home was in New York), West only appears on the rereleased version.

While on the subject, here is John Entwistle's isolated bass track from the live version of the tune included in The Kids Are All Right. It takes a few moments to get going (the audio only covers the playing, so the track is silent until :44), yet is simply mind-blowing.

Pete said he wouldnt attempt
to write another Rock Opera after Tommy

And yet he did exactly that. "Who's Next" - considered by many to be The Who's best album - actually began as another rock opera called "Lifehouse".

Can't say I'm disappointed with the way the album turned out though......

Yeah ! Thats kinda what I meant, he said he would never do it again
but later material still had that Rock Opera Sound. "Who's next" is
the album I am most likely thinking of ..
