THE BEATLES' ENTIRE ORIGINAL RECORDED CATALOGUE REMASTERED FOR RELEASE 09-09-09

7th April 2009

Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music are delighted to announce the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (9-9-09), the same date as the release of the widely anticipated "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. On the same date, two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released.

The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilising state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.

The collection comprises all 12 Beatles albums in stereo, with track listings and artwork as originally released in the UK, and 'Magical Mystery Tour,' which became part of The Beatles' core catalogue when the CDs were first released in 1987. In addition, the collections 'Past Masters Vol. I and II' are now combined as one title, for a total of 14 titles over 16 discs. This will mark the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc. These 14 albums, along with a DVD collection of the documentaries, will also be available for purchase together in a stereo boxed set.[/img]

Looks like nothing new here. All of the band's original 1962-1970 catalog released again, in the same Original UK albums & 2 singles compilations that were released back in 1987, only with upgraded sound that apparently wasn't possible 22 years ago?

Oh well, if I can get it all in one box at Costco for a decent discount, I'll probably buy it.

A lot of the early recordings were mono, so this could be pretty cool..
I might have to check it out, (Even though I practically have the box set already)

Love The Beatles, keep em coming guys.

I always thought Ike Turner's "Rocket 88" was one of the first uses of distortion on record. From what I can recall, Ike's distortion was caused by a his guitarist's amp being damaged and he used it anyways, on the recording. My guess is Les Paul or Leo Fender were experimenting with distortion very early on, too.

The guitarist known as Link Wray was using feedback and distortion in 1958. He also had his tune "Rumble" banned in many American cities in the late fifties. What is most remarkable about that fact is the song was an instrumental. :hexplode:

Good call on Link Wray.
While we're giving out kudos....the dude had the power chords down and was a precursor of things to come, in a rock context.

I was reading more on the subject and it seems that Wary and Ike Turner have similar experiences during roughly the same time period. Interesting time in music.
Ike's kinda like Spector though, you can respect the art.......just not the Artist.

That is the Phil Spector version from Let It Be. Spector slowed the track down, and added orchestras and a choir. Another version had bird sounds nailed onto it, and was released for a wildlife charity project. Here is an unadorned version from the Anthology series, that reveals the simple beauty of the song.

Thanks Craig, I like this version, sounds like the unadulterated version.
Because Im used to the album version, it sounds rushed, but still
the magic is obvious. Theres a place that JL could take his voice into
that sounded unworldly, but I seem to notice it more on the slower tracks.
When he sings faster he sounds more like the "Rock Lennon"
Never heard the above version of universe before, its great.

FORD

There are now four "official" releases of Across the Universe.

1) The original release in 1969 was for a wildlife charity album released only in the UK. That version was eventually re-released on the "Past Masters Volume II" compilation in 1987.

2) The Spectorized version from the original "Let It Be" release.

3) The non-Spectorized version from "Let It Be Naked".

4) The original demo for the song from 1967 which was included in Anthology Vol II (which Craig posted above)

The first three are really the same basic recording, with the other differences being on the production level. And the 67 demo is not all that different from these. It's all based on Lennon with an acoustic guitar, after all.

The version I posted above is none of those, of course. It's a rehearsal take from the Let It Be sessions, where they were attempting to rock it up a little and make it more of a "band effort". They probably made several attempts at this - as they did all the songs in the Let It Be sessions, but in the end, decided that John got the song right the first time and just went with it.

And then Spector fucked it all up with the choirs and strings and shit.

My personal fave...after all the studio tricks they uncovered, the orchestra usage, every bell and whistle you can think of available at the time to record with, they went back to the basics on this one and worked it well....with a little help from Billy.

Too bad they never toured after '66. It could have been gold, if the chicks would have stopped screaming.

Nice one HYS ! :)

But does it really surprise you that much ? When you take into account their
early days (Cavern, Berlin etc) they were very much 4 guys with the most
basic instruments. Thats how they honed their craft, I think the whole "Let it Be"
film allowed them the chance to remind everyone that they were an
incredibly talented live band.... You can see them genuinely smiling in parts
of "I dig a Pony", anyone who has ever played in a band when it "clicks"
knows what that smile is....

Suprise me? Hmm..

I was too young back then:biggrin:. I think of what direction the band was heading, and then pretty much ended the way it was in the beginning, you know?

And fuck!

How frustrating it must have been to try and put on a show with basically a small pub setup and play a stadium with 50,000 teenyboppers screaming louder than you could play!

Maybe Hendrix figured out how to do that touring with the Monkees? I dunno..
Voume definitely increased around that time....I think I read a piece where Jagger tried to talk them into touring again in '69 but they said no, using stage sound as an excuse, but Jag knew they were done as a band by then and weren't interested.

The Stones AND The Beatles in 69....:D Somebody would have died....but not Keith!

It was definitely one of their earliest. I've heard Quarrymen demos of "One After 909" from 1959-1960.

They tried to record it officially in 1963, but for whatever reason weren't satisfied with the results. It did surface in bootlegs and eventually on Volume 1 of the Anthology series though. Including some takes that fell apart....

....and the finished version. Which still ended up in the vault until 1995.

Awesome footage of HENDRIX....

If I remember correctly..."IF"....Seems like I remember PAUL saying that SGT. PEPPER came out in England on a thursday...that HENDRIX gig was on a Sunday night...the BEATLES were all in attendance...& JIMI blew their minds...he learned it and opened his show with it.....

TOMMORROW NEVER KNOWS is my absolute fav BEATLE's song....

I Remember an interview with BOB WEIR of the DEAD...talking about the DEAD walking around San Fran in 1966 when REVOLVER was released...or the single with TOMMORROW NEVER KNOWS on it was out...they walked by a PIZZA SHOP...& heard the song playing on a J-Box....they were so blown away by the song they kept playing it over & over & over again...until they were thrown out of the place.....

I don't know why the Japanese had such horrible audio on that show when they were building the stereo systems of the world at the same time...and it's in color...

The engineer on that show should have been executed!

Ok, i'm tired of searching for this...

A killer ELO song called Queen Of The Hours...

John Lennon once said that ELO were "Sons of the Beatles."

I can't find the entire song, but it's in this silly mix of songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mejKjKTzRno) at about the two minute mark following Roll Over Beethoven...

Here is Lennon appearing on a radio program, where he makes the above quote while introducing ELO's "Showdown".

Cool!

I dig that ending. Must have been a radio promo, because that is mostly the final recording, but not the final mix...

Lennon had some negative comments at one point also, saying that ELO made an entire career out of I Am The Walrus...

Probably when they performed "Hey Jude" on the David Frost show. Before that, there was the performance of "All You Need Is Love" for that worldwide tv broadcast.

MAAAARRRRKKKK!
Hey!! I just found this reply--hope I havent lost the contest!:D

Well, heres what I think....I think the rooftop was the final official performance by the Beatles---I have it on VHS...If you can get it (that movie, 'Let It Be'---GET IT!!)

I read that Paul, Ringo & George played together for a wedding (Clapton? I think?) in 79...plus of course they did those 2 songs with Johns old recordings for the 'Anthology'....:(

And if you havent watched the Anthology series--WATCH IT!!

And was Ringos 'It Dont Come Easy' the first solo?? I remember that coming out before Uncle Albert AND Imagine in '71....Yikes Im gettin older by the minute! :D

I hope I win the contest...or SOME contest.....Id love to talk to my 'Sleepless in Australia' friend(s)!!! Ive been expecting that baby for 2 years! ;)

Vey good! I was 6 at the time, and the only thing I could remember was the time frame when 3 people I knew (2 kids) were killed on a boat about the same time Paul's song came out...but you are right.

Why the Beatles Broke Up: The New Issue of Rolling Stone

On January 30th, 1969, the Beatles made their last public appearance, performing a gig on the roof of Apple Records. A year later, they were done for real: Paul McCartney sued to dissolve the band, concluding what Mikal Gilmore calls “one of the most mysterious and complicated end-of-romance tales of the 20th century.”

But what really did the Beatles in? In our new issue, on stands today, Gilmore launches an exhaustive, fresh investigation into an oft-examined topic, recounting the last years of the world’s greatest group — the tumultuous time during which they released their best work. Tracing the Beatles’ artistic conflicts over the White Album sessions and Let It Be, as well as the management shifts that brought Allen Klein to power and changes in the bandmembers’ personal lives, Gilmore comes to the conclusion that the demise of the Beatles was far worse than a “divorce,” as John Lennon had referred to it. “The Beatles’ end was an accident, a maneuver by John Lennon that went horribly wrong,” he writes in our story behind the story.

“Why the Beatles Broke Up” is on newsstands now. Read Gilmore’s essay explaining his conclusions — and how he arrived at them — plus flip through an illustrated guide to the Beatles’ last days and photos of their entire career, as well as a guide to their full catalog, and hear audio from Jann S. Wenner’s landmark 1970 Lennon interview at our Essential Beatles Coverage page.
