Comments (75) Recommend (4)A 56-year-old transient was arrested at the Olympia Timberland Library downtown Saturday after a librarian saw him “viewing what appeared to be child pornography” on a library computer, court papers state.

Howard Liston, 56, was being held Monday on suspicion of possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

According to court papers:

Library staff called Olympia police after a librarian walked by Liston and saw a depiction of what appeared to be child pornography on the computer Liston was using.

“When law enforcement arrived and approached the defendant he started closing tabs,” court papers state. “The officer stopped the defendant. When the officer was reviewing the screen tabs that were open, he noticed several sites that depicted minor children in various sexual acts with adults.”

Liston told police that he was surfing the Internet for a job, and “wanted to see what would appear when he did a search for teen porn pics.”

“We do not allow illegal activity at our library, whether it’s on our computers or anywhere else,” Jodi Reng, executive director of the Timberland Regional Library system, said in an interview Monday. “When illegal activity occurs, we call the police.”

Not always. For instance, at the city library where I've worked, since the computers are not tied into the county system (the place is not affiliated with the county library, as it is an independent entity) the facility merely uses a package offered by Comcast for such specifics. There is little if any filtering available with regard to content. In fact, the controls are set for for limiting inherent use (ie: printing, various Microsoft packages, ect.), and since the area is rather close knit (only 9 computers in all), the staff more or less monitors content visually.

I'm unsure of the protocols in place within county libraries. For that, you'd need to ask one of our resident neo-homeless sociopaths.

I'm honestly surprised he was able to access that shit at the library. I've used those computers, and they're locked down fairly tight, and close enough to the front counter for the librarians to have a pretty good idea of what you're doing. Not to mention the ridiculously short time limits. Regular access is in 15 minute blocks, though you can reserve one for an entire hour, but you have to sign a waiting list, usually a day or two in advance to get one of those, and the list is usually full. If nobody's waiting, you can go back on again, but you have to log completely back into the system, and you can't save or bookmark anything. You can't download anything to a floppy or a flash drive either, and most script-based pages are disabled. You're also forced to use shitty Microsoft IE. Probably even shittier IE7 by now.

He's definitely one dedicated pervert if he managed to find porn on those decidedly crippled computers, though I doubt he'll get much applause for his efforts in jail.

GAR definitely would hate the Timberland Regional Library's computer network though. Definitely not suitable for all day trolling.

This guy could get his hands slapped for violating public-use policy against downloading or uploading offensive material, but he could also work around that by saying the Federal statute precludes the local one in the name of "researching" pedophiles.

Same as Pete Townshend excused self, he was "researching" the interwebs.

But Pete got popped not by exposing himself or others, his CC# account was discovered when a pedo site's accounts was raided.

If this library pedophile got nabbed with a USB drive of some kind, or saved the pics to disc, then he's violated Federal possesion of pedophilliac materials.

Some libraries do not have removable storage options, they are browse-only workstations. If that's the kind of PC this guy was using I'd think he's pretty off the hook for a serious charge, that is if they don't pressure him to take a lesser misdemeanor in hopes of monitoring the guy under a probation agreement.
