View Full Version : What was your first concert?

My first concert was a Waylon Jennings concert my parents took me to around 1980/81 and i was 11 or 12 yrs old. Place was jammed packed and i thought, "what the hell is going on?"

First concert of my own free will was Judas Priest with Dokken in the summer of 1986.

My first show would have been VH 1984 but i was too young to drive and my parents wouldn't let me go with friends. I still hold that against my parents to this very day.

Neil Diamond in 1985 (I think). I remember it was raining and we were in lawn seats. My little sister and I had a great time sliding down the hill in the monsoon.

Still a fan!

I had a rough start. The first foreign band I saw was Van Cherone in 1996. I only went to see finnish bands before that, plus living up north made it hard. I miss missing Soundgarden that year.

Since then, I've seen plenty of HUGE bands and been to a ton of festivals.

my first concert was Rainbow. I can't recall the exact date of it but I remember that Blackmore was not wearing a wig yet at that time.

when I saw him again 13 months later his hair was too abundant. I think it was why there was a stir in the audience when he appeared on stage.

Sorry for the dup thread. I usually use the search engine to make sure i am not overlapping anything. I didn't in this case. Combine it, trash it, whatever. Just trying to get some action going.
I love hearing people's first concert experience. We all wound up here for the same reason, our allegiance to the man -DLR. But, we all may have had some unfortunate or funny first time experiences and i get a kick out of it. Thanks.

It was the 26th of February in the year 1986! Lloyd Noble Arena, Norman, Oklahoma. KISS on the Asylum Tour with W.A.S.P. opening up. I was like 13 and went with two of my friends and one of their parents drove us and waited in the car. I remember like it was yesterday. Back in those days the pot in the air at those shows was so thick you could hardly see the stage. W.A.S.P. had the bloody heads on stage on poles. It was a great show.

What is funny, i had a friend go see Ozzy on Speak of the Devil with Vandenburg opening. It was here in Alabama, the heart of the bible belt, so the show was picketted heavily with local church goers who were handing out material and warning concert goers that they were being sinful by going to see such a person as Ozzy. LOL. Due to all the controversy, only about 300 people showed up but Ozzy played anyway. I thought that was so cool. However, toward the end of the show, Ozzy raised his hands up in his classic pose and said, "I shall never return." And he never did.

I don't remember it was late spring or early summer of 1984... I seem to remember that it might have been Yngwie, but I can't be positive. They were having alot of problems with their sound/gear and at one point early in the show Bonnett mooned the audience. He was heavily booed for the rest of the set by the rabid biker/hunter Nugent fanbase after that.

For Crue, I was dressed & ready to go probably 4 hours early. Couldn't even eat I was so excited. Just waiting for my older sister & her boyfriend to get there to take me. Man, the 80's was so great for arena shows.

What was the line up that year?

GAR
05-16-2009, 05:12 PM
I had seen parts of 2 VH gigs in backyard parties, probably my first really loud band, 1976 and the next summer, 1977.

In SoCal sometimes to get on campus to flip 1/4 page gig flyers into the school locker vents, the bands would play free 20 min school lunchtime assemblys from junior high up to high school, so I may have seen a lot of bands.

I followed The Sharks, because they were proliferant in posting fantastic 11x14 flyers on telephone poles for their gigs, and at one of these shows was what I learned later to be the first Motley Crue gig, Pookies in Pasadena.. they operated a sub sandwich restaurant during the day but at night they'd clear tables and had a 3ft stage full on..

But I'd have to say my first real loud concert with lots and lots of kids was Dio-Dokken- and some poser band opener they both blew away by lightyears (gun club? jetboy? I forget) I think it was may 83 at long beach sports arena.

I had the ringin' bells for hearing 3 days later.. that place is an awful concrete bunker and echoed terribly.

Funny thing of that show, DIO had nets up in the rafters witholding thousands of party balloons and couldn't yank 'em down for whatever tune they do that, or used to do that (man on the silver mountain) and wed laugh about that for years later.

He didn't know I had already been to a couple..lol

Were Thunder really that good?

Well back then they had everything to prove.

They had just released their 1st album, an album that is a classic rock 'classic'

An album that still today dominates their show. so they were hot to trot.

After the 2nd album it all went downhill very fast, but on that day in August 1990 they rocked! They crowd loved them.

I'm a big Whitesnake fan but at this point in their career they were just fucking terrible! By adding Steve Via the soul had just gone alltogether.

Aerosmith were fantastic! Still touring on the back of 'Pump' (great LP)

Poison were a joke! Just did not come across at all well on a sat afternoon.
(But like Roth says "If you can't do it under a 60 watt bulb then you can't do it at al" Which proved to be the case with Poison (they were shit!)

Quireboys - Just a club band that did not transport well to a festival gig.

Great day, I was even interviewed on Radio 1 when they were asking people about Heavy rock in the Uk etc.

My first show was KISS in 78 as well. I was 13 & went with 2 friends and his Dad. The Coliseum in Madison, WI holds 10,100 w/ festival style seating but he made us sit up high and far away. I was bummed until KISS came onstage with huge light up logo. Then I was thrilled just to be in the same room with them, Gene spitting blood and fire - WOW!
Detective w/ Michael Des Barres opened, I didn't like them.

I missed Aerosmith that same year for a family trip, then Joe left in 79 and I was pissed. I did finally see original lineup on Back in the Saddle tour in 84
Also saw Classic Van Halen on every tour starting w/ Van Halen II.

I had to do a lot of talking for my parents to let me go... I was 13.

Ah yes, the great debate begins. How much time prior to the concert do I ask, being good, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, washing the car, cleaning your room, begging & pleading, finishing homework early...all that great stuff to see 4 guys play for about 2 hours live. Worth it? Hell yeah!

BruinJer
05-28-2009, 06:49 PM
well... yes, I did all those extra things but it was the fact that they didn't let me go to the Van Halen concert the year prior for the obvious reason I WAS TWELVE. They absolutely would not budge when it came to me going to the US Festival... 3 days in San Bernardino for a 14 year old boy was a bit much to ask for... I think I would freak if my kid asked me to let her go to a 3 day festival like that.... times have changed!

My parents took my sister and me to see the Osmonds in 73 or 74 I think. I was 5 or 6. I've seen pics but don't remember it.

My next concert wasn't until 7th grade when our drummers mom took us to see Rod Stewart in Indy. That was late 79/early 80. It was postponed due to weather the first time. I'm sure it was still winter when we ended up going.

Concert 3 was either Journey w/Greg Khin opening in Indy or Billy Squier w/Nazareth opening in a 3000 head venue w/no seats on the floor in Louisville. I later saw Maiden/Fastway/Saxon in that same 3000 head venue.

I saw that tour too in May, I was just a little kid, but DAMN I loved me some Fair Warning, In fact it's still my favorite VH album. Unfortunately though, just a month earlier I went and saw Hall & Oates, so that was the first concert I went to of my own accord.

Unless, of course you count the VT State Fair I went to with my parents featuring Olivia Newton John, or my friend's 10th birthday when we saw Sha-Na-Na. Those two were not my choice.

Damn! I would have loved to have seen all of those shows. I wasn't born until 68 so that rules out Monterey. The Who from 67 or so to about 75 where the best rock n roll band ever. I'm sure the 72 Sabbath show was well worth the ass whooping. I have some boots from that era of Sabbath. Great stuff. The Zep....... well it's just so sad that I never got to see them.
