Q: Is it true you were offered the gig in METALLICA after Cliff Burton died?

Bush: I actually was invited to join the band [as the vocalist] around the "Kill 'Em All" period. It was a hard decision, but ARMORED SAINT was already up and running, and these guys (in SAINT) were my childhood friends. Who knows what would have happened if I had? I don't think about it much. Joey (Vera, SAINT bassist) was one of the bassists that were asked to audition after Cliff passed, but never did.

Bush talked about it in an interview on XM a while back.

He said James did not really want to be the singer.

Bush also said if they had only known how big the band was going to become...but at the time they had no idea.

Pretty old news.

Like Warf mentioned, James was going to just focus on guitar and songwriting.

They played 1 show back before kill'em all with another guy on vox and it didn't wwork out so they ditched the idea.

The rest is history.....
