View Full Version : Rolling Stones Remasters...... AGAIN??

FORD

Right around 2000 or so rumors of a Rolling Stones "career spanning box set" of rarities and other cool shit started circulating. The band eventually confirmed that they were indeed working on such a project. For some reason, it was scrapped at the 11th hour and replaced with "40 Licks" a career spanning greatest hits album with 4 "new" songs that were probably leftovers from Bridges to Babylon or whatever.

Since then, the Stones have made one studio album, two live DVD box sets, one movie (and the resulting DVD & Soundtrack CD) and have toured quite a bit.

But still no word on the goddamn box set.

Meanwhile the Stones are now releasing, AGAIN, their entire post 1970 catalog.

As if the 1986 CBS remasters, and the 1994 Virgin remasters weren't enough? And still, just straight reissues here.... no bonus material of any kind, even the B Sides released on 45"s from the same era.

For fucks sake, is it too much to ask for a REAL remaster of the Some Girls album, using the full length goddamn songs as they were before Bob Clearmountain sliced and diced them all into pieces small enough to fit on a 40 minute piece of vinyl?? Yeah, I got all that stuff on bootlegs, but it SOUNDS LIKE SHIT. We know you have the tapes. You know we'll buy it. What's the goddamn problem?

It's amazing how a band that's made an entire 9 studio albums in the 34 years since they last switched guitar players can always seem to find their way back on the charts with as little effort as possible.

"Call me lazy bones
Ain't got no time to waste away
Lazy bones ain't got no time to waste away
Don't you think, don't you think, it's just about time to hide away? Yeah, yeah!"

they left Virgin for Universal. i hear the remasters aren't so great, some posters at Shidoobee aren't saying good things about them, and Star Star has been altered a bit. someone there also mentioned that some of these remasters have sold less than 100 units.

This one is really from the Black and Blue sessions in 1975, and not 1979 as the title says. And it's not so much an "early version" as it is a "not butchered to fit on the album" version. And it was a goddamn crime to cut down the solo in this song. (Played by Wayne Perkins, BTW)

I honestly had no clue that they had changed labels or that they were remastering again, until I stumbled across it on the net just an hour or so ago. Looks like Mick's publicity whore genes are slipping

Shine A Light was their first Universal release.

the remasters were announced on April 2nd.

Beginning on May 5th, fans of The Rolling Stones will have much to rejoice about with the arrival of re-mastered versions of "Sticky Fingers," "Goats Head Soup," "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll" and "Black And Blue."

And it doesn't end there. The band will continue their reissue campaign with Universal Music Group with the reissue of "Some Girls," "Emotional Rescue," "Tattoo You" and "Undercover," out on June 9th in the US and June 8th worldwide. The third round of reissues will follow soon thereafter with "Dirty Work," "Steel Wheels," "Voodoo Lounge," "Bridges To Babylon" and their most recent album of all new material, "A Bigger Bang."

Astute fans will notice the absence of the masterful "Exile On Main St." from the release schedule. Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine, where "Exile On Main St." was rated the 7th Greatest Album Of All Time, as "Jagger and Richards' definitive songwriting statement of outlaw pride and dedication to grit," no one has forgotten about the marquee album, least of all The Rolling Stones. A late 2009 reissue of "Exile On Main St." is being planned as part of a wider celebration that will accompany its release.

In a nod to the band's diehard fans, UMG will also be releasing a collector's box in which to house all 14 post-1971 studio albums, as well as making the catalogue newly available digitally.

More news will be available shortly.

one rumor is that the remaster of Exile will bring a new tour. i think if Mick wants to get a British "supergroup" together for the 2012 London Olympics that a tour would start sometime in 2011.

Maybe "Exile" will get the deluxe treatment that I wished Some Girls would get, and that's the reason they're treating it like a secret project. Possibly packaging it as a "box set" like Bruce did with the 30th anniversary of Born To Run, or U2 did with the 20th anniversary Joshua Tree.

Of course those two remasters included a DVD of a concert from that era. Dare we hope for a legit release of "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones" in an "Exile" box??

It actually lasts damn near 12 minutes, but no doubt got cut here due to YouTube's 10 Minute limit. Musically, it's almost the finished song. No sax or harmonica solos yet, and obviously not Mick's finished vocal, but all the other parts are pretty much right where they should be...........

Amazes how Jagger can milk the Stones cash cow over and over and over again.

Stones were at their best when raunchy

Top 5 raunchy

1. Hey Negrita
2. Let It Bleed
3. Can't You Hear Me Knocking
4. Stray Cat Blues
5. Star Star

Cocksucker Blues really doesn't count because it was Jagger solo.

Depends how they would do it. The proposed box set, as they initially advertised it, would have been all or mostly previously unreleased material, along the lines of the Beatles Anthology discs, or Dylan's Bootleg Series. So you might have recognized the songs, but different versions. Definitely worth the purchase for serious fans, maybe not so much for someone who thinks the Stones haven't made a worthy album since "Exile"

Stones were at their best when raunchy

Top 5 raunchy

1. Hey Negrita
2. Let It Bleed
3. Can't You Hear Me Knocking
4. Stray Cat Blues
5. Star Star

Cocksucker Blues really doesn't count because it was Jagger solo.

I'd add about half the Some Girls album to that list, especially the title track.

I'd also add another "really doesn't count" with 'Memo From Turner'... not the Metamorphosis version, but the one that appears on the London Years Singles Collection.

Great thread Ford... wish I had access to youtube at work :(

It may be difficult to get a true career-spanning box set for the Stones, as the rights to the pre-Sticky Fingers material are held apart from everything released post-1970; the CBS and Virgin deals the band signed in the 1980s and 1990s didn't include the rights to that earlier material...only the stuff released on the Rolling Stones record label (Sticky Fingers and beyond) was transferred in those deals...at least that's the story I heard.

some of the tracks on 40 Licks were licensed by Abkco, so there has been some cooperation.

the last round of Abkco remasters were pretty good, they included a SACD version on the same disc.

Well.... ABKCO and Virgin managed to cut a deal for the 40 Licks compilation back in 2002, and I expect they had already been working together when the end product was supposed to be a box set. And that hurdle should be even easier to clear now, since ABKCO is now also distributed by Universal, whom the Stones apparently have now signed with.

So for the first time ever, their entire catalog is under control of one corporation, at least in the US. Not sure about the worldwide distribution. Though Allen Klein will no doubt still be a royal dickhead about the publishing on the early stuff.

Well that song certainly improved over the holidays! Version II is the master take. They basically cut Woody's steel guitar solo in half and maybe chopped a few seconds off the intro and a chorus towards the end for the album version.

Originally recorded in 1975. Who's playing lead guitar on this one? Damned if I know. But it ain't Woody or Mick Taylor.

Jeff Beck? Eric Clapton? Any guesses?

This one really doesn't fit the category of the stuff I've been posting here, and I usually hate attempts to update old songs to "hip hop" beats, but this actually works, oddly enough.

Ya Ya's is scheduled for a deluxe release treatment in November of 2009:

GET YER YA YA’S OUT 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION November (tbc)
40th Anniversary special edition multi format release – including the entire concert for the first time ever (incl. support acts B.B. King + Ike & Tina Turner), 5 unreleased tracks as an extra EP and a DVD with never before seen footage & extras.

Also the Stones are apparently working on a Deluxe edition of Exile. I hope they put a live concert as disc 2 (Brussels Affair anyone?).

I hope Jody Klein had a firm commitment to that project before his old man died, or it could get backburnered due to "legal complications". Actually I seem to remember an "expanded" Ya-Yas being part of the original plan for the ABKCO 2002 remaster project, but that slipped under the radar just like the box set did.

And maybe if Jody is a more reasonable businessman than his father (and the additional bonus of the entire Stones catalog being under one roof for the first time in history, as far as corporate distribution goes) we'll finally get that box set after all?

Someone posted a very cool lossless 8-Track rip of 'Some Girls' over at demonoid.

Thanks.... I'd never heard that version of the album before.

And now that I have..... I gotta wonder what the Hell they were thinking with those edits.

I'd actually heard that mix of "Miss You" years ago. They should have made that the official album version. Same with that version of "Beast of Burden". I don't think adding an extra minute to each side of the record would have pushed the limit on the vinyl. And in either case, I can't believe Virgin didn't use these versions when they released the remastered "Some Girls" CD in 1994. I'll assume Universal didn't use them either, but I'm boycotting those discs because of the whole "censoring StarFucker" business.

As for the mess they made out of "Shatterred"....... WHY? :(

I believe the re-issues are the result of a recent label shuffle for the band.

I would say proper digital remasters aren't a bad thing. Definitely a step-up from the 1986 releases. Were the 1994 releases a digital master or not? Remastering had started then but wasn't huge yet.

Is that version of Miss You the one where talks about how girls will just come and go, they're just like streetcars? I prefer that version to the original anyday.

the '86 (CBS) remasters were meh. i don't mind the Virgin ones, i think they said digitally remastered...i have all my cases in storage and can't look.

i really don't have any need for the Universal versions, but i need to finish my collection of the ABKCO dual discs.

I'll believe it when it's in my hands, and it's already WAY too late, but this is still great news. Rolling Stones 1969-1973 > most any other band.
