Alright, some people like House, others don't. The problem is, most of the people who don't like House don't like Hugh either.

But that's probably because they don't know his career.

Here's the first sketch of A Bit of Fry & Laurie.

You may have noticed that in all the sketches, the other actor is always the same.

His name is Stephen Fry, and he's been Hugh Laurie's friend & partner throughout their careers.

Very few people can make themselves noticeable besides a monstrously talented actor like Hugh, but Stephen is (obviously) the perfect counterpart for Hugh.

Hard to say who's the most talented. I'm partial to Hugh, but Stephen himself is a force to reckoned with, and no mistake.

Blackadder is one of the classic British shows...though Hugh wasn't really in it extensively until the 3rd series.

Excellent thread. A lot of this stuff has aged better than I thought it would

Yeah, you never know what will survive in the long run. Uh... only time will tell if it... oh, fuck it.

Take Seinfeld, for example. A show about nothing, you'd think that would age quite well, and still be watchable these days. It aged HORRIBLY. Even Cheers aged better than Seinfeld.

But most of the really good British sitcoms are still quite watchable & enjoyable today. Hell, I'm watching Are You Being Served? on YouTube, and larving every minute of it.

Cheers! :bottle:

I've noticed in the last few years Fawlty Towers is looking really old

Not true.

He was in the last episode of series 2. He kidnapped Blackadder and Meltchett and held Queenie to ransom to only release one of them. She couldn't decide between them, so she blew all the money on a party, and then Blackadder and Meltchett escaped and gatecrashed the party. Then he returned and killed them all (Blackadder, Meltchett, Baldrick, Percy, Queenie), before disguising himself as Queenie, with the implication that he ruled Great Britain as Queen Elizabeth for the rest of his days.

True story. Well..not TRUE as in it actually happened, but ti did happen on the show.

Seinfeld is something I was always interested in seeing, as everybody seemed to like it and I love Curb Your Enthusiasm myself, so I kept trying to give it a go but always had trouble sitting through an episode.

Fawlty Towers...maybe its about time it looked dated. It took 30 years. I think in comparrison to other sitcoms, it has aged very well. Most of the actual material is still very strong, even if there are a few dodgy bits. The wobbling sets and cut to film whenever they go outside...I dunno, cheap production values are part of its charm I think.

Love that Friends clip...amazing what a difference a few years can make!

Haha, great clips! Thanks for that.

Always been a big fan of Blackadder, but never actually seen A Bit Of Fry And Laurie before. Never thought it'd be that funny. How wrong I could be!

I have to say that Hugh, as the dimwitted perverted Prince Regent in Blackadder The Third, really upstaged Rowan. And he gells so much better with him as opposed to others like Tim McInnerny (Percy) in the first series and Miranda Richardson (Queen Elizabeth I) in the second.

I met Stephen Fry a few years ago and I just had to nudge him on his General Melchett character, to which he responded with, "Baaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Oh yeah... forgot about that one. That character was kickarse, too!

Seinfeld looks & sounds too dated. It's almost unbearable to sit through an entire episode.

Bang on. The only reason Fawlty Towers looks dated is precisely because of it's cheap production values. Well, that and some of the clothes.

Ok, it's beginning to show its age, but it's ageing well, anyway. It has its charm.

I hate Seinfeld, I hate Curb your enthusiasm. Not a flattering view of people, and i hate that they find themselves funny. They aren't.

Not supposed to be. That's the joke. Also far more accurate to real life than Friends.

I think Curb is very British in that respect. Kinda like Alan Partridge in a way...no jokes per se, it's all character-based.

Plus, I love that the dialouge is improvised. Genius move. I didn't know that for years.

Rather that than some of those awful audience sitcoms...

-King of Queens
-Everybody Loves Raymond
-Rules of Engagement
-Will and Grace
-Couting Alice
-Stacked

Exactly how many sex/relationship jokes are there?

I'd have thought they'd run out by now.

Hey, don't talk shit about Raymond, alright?

I love Raymond.

EVERYBODY loves Raymond.

It's kickass.

Screw the rest, though.

.

I know it's the joke. They find themselves hilarious. I find them a crashing self-absorbed bore.

'course people say that about me too.

I think Curb is prrrreeety good.

He's becoming a bit of a caricature in the latest series though.
