Exactly. Especially in the beginning, I'd say they were really a metal band. They made some dark, tight, heavy shite. They just didn't wear leather pants.

Hmmm. Never cared for that term. People tend to lump Van Halen, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, etc.. into the Hair Metal genre. To me, Hair Metal were the bands that cared all about their looks and the music was an afterthought. Britney Fox, Poison, Warrant, Bullet Boys....the crap that kinda killed the 80's metal movement. Just the way I personally see it.

Anyways, the first time I heard Soundgarden I was at Tower Records buying the new tape of...I don't remember...Crue, Megadeth, Metallica maybe. Anyhow, as we checked out they handed out a free tape with I think two songs on it to everyone. Soundgarden "Loud Love". Heavy dark stuff. I liked it. (Seattle?)

I remember the cover picture I couldn't tell what the fuck it was. Almost like the picture of Alex on VH I.

Chris has one of my favorite voices of all time too. Some of the songs I don't even like I still listen to just to hear him. The guy is amazing. Why Vedder & Cobain got more props I'll never understand.

Well I don't like this term myself but it's the most famous one so I have to use it to describe my fave music genre to someone who's not into that stuff.
I'd say the guys from Motley cared about their looks as much as the guys from Warrant, or even more. Plus I don't think those bands you listed are lame, every one of them had some killer tunes. But then again, I'm a hair metal freak so you know.

Soundgarden formed in 1985, long before some media shit for brains invented the term "grunge". They were favorably compared to Zeppelin in their early days, because Cornell's range was reminiscent of Plant at his peak. And their first record deal was with Black Flag's SST records, which meant the punks took them seriously as well.

With the exception of Van HALEN themselves, there's not a single band out of the 80's LA scene that could touch Soundgarden. Guns N Roses would be the only ones who came close, and they needed a bass player from another Seattle band (The Fartz) before they could even do it.

And as for Guns N' Roses, they were one of the weakest of the glam genre actually (even though they were always claiming they're not glam - wearing dyed blonde teased hair, cowboy boots and tight leather pants - yeah right... fucking hypocrites). One good album and the rest is average.
