RIP Alex Chilton

This is indeed sad news. Big Star were one of the most so-called "heavy influences" of so many groups who stole from them and got away with it because Chilton never wanted to be part of that whole rock star attitude opting out of playing any of his band's past music for years; Chilton could be downright boring at times and the last Big Star effort in 2005 was a bit of a let down but even with that said it was good to see the man performing live again. News says he died of a heart attack at 59 which is odd because he did not look like he was in bad health.

R.I.P. Alex. To me you will be highly missed.

Can't remember where the following quote originated, but it's true enough.....

"Big Star didn't sell all that many records. But everybody who did buy them started their own band."

Paul Westerberg (see above) was obviously influenced by Chilton and Big Star. R.E.M cited them as a major influence. The Bangles had a bigger hit with "September Gurls" than Big Star did themselves. And of course, a more recent generation knows that song from "That 70's Show" without having a clue who wrote it.

And let's not forget Alex's first band......

Yes, and they used to perform it live....

[at least they did when I was lucky enough to open up for them in 2000]
