    Scientists make cancer cells vanish

The latest headlines and breaking news from Scotland and beyond in The Herald - the longest running national newspaper in the world.

    Scientists make cancer cells vanish

    21 Apr 2010

Scottish scientists have made cancer tumours vanish within 10 days by sending DNA to seek and destroy the cells.

The system, developed at Strathclyde and Glasgow universities, is being hailed as a breakthrough because it appears to eradicate tumours without causing harmful side-effects. A leading medical journal has described the results so far as remarkable, while Cancer Research UK said they were encouraging.

Dr Christine Dufes, a lecturer at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and leader of the research, said: “The tumours were completely gone within 10 days. It is fantastic. When you talk about 10 days that is the time frame for curing a cold. Imagine if within 10 days you could completely make a tumour disappear.”

Researchers around the world are trying to find ways to use genes as a cancer treatment, but one problem is ensuring they attack the tumour without destroying healthy tissue.

In laboratory experiments the Strathclyde research team used a plasma protein called transferrin, which carries iron through the blood, to deliver the therapeutic DNA to the right spot. Once in situ the DNA produced a protein that attacked the tumour cells.

The findings have been published in the Journal of Controlled Release, with an accompanying comment from editor Professor Kinam Park, of Purdue University, Indiana, saying other attempts to target genes at cancer cells have “seldom shown complete disappearance of tumours”.

The research was initially supported with a grant from charity Tenovus Scotland, which supports the work of young scientists to help their ideas get off the ground.

As many years as it takes for the Pharma Industry to figure out how to make a buck off of it.

Curing has never been the priority, the priority is treating people for a prolonged period of time to make more $$$$$$ off an illness.

Big deal. Edward Van Halen cured cancer years ago simply using cigarettes and wine. This seemingly involved the small sacrifice of his ability to create new music, along with the entire loss of his dignity. Apparently, he felt this to be an equitable trade.

Hmmm sometimes and that's why drugs like viagra or prozac are so profitable but this research has not been done by the Pharma industry it's been done by public owned universities here.

The downside is there seems to be a cure for cancer announced every other week as researchers try to get their funding renewed.

It always boils down to money..........

The Pharma industry was a tongue-in-cheek cynical response but literally, if they can cure a disease doesn't mean they will.

I believe it depends on the profit margin and if it's more profitable to keep people perpetually sick or medicated, that's what will be commercially available.

The situation is much like AIDS it is easily killed with householed cleansers with bleach like Comet, but you cannot flush a body with Comet ( much like Kieff getting his new blood every time he reaches toxic Heroin status).

It is the ability to cure the cancer, destroy the cancer, that has always been easy, ( I mean you can kill cancer with air or even a hammer) but the trick oh yee of wiseness "wisdomianished'ness" is to not, "with treatment" destroy the surrounding tissue or life form.

But you all already knew all of that you know, two dimensional thinkers who get it.. am I rite..?

Yeah, and when this treatment does become commercially available, how much are they going to charge for it? The price may be so high that it'll make you opt for death instead!
