View Full Version : Mr. Scary in the Desert - the GEORGE LYNCH THREAD

In the late 70s, pre-VH signing, according to reputable sources (that were here, playing the scene) there were 3 guitar players that were considered "IT" in Los Angeles. Edward Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and GEORGE LYNCH. Supposedly Ed and Randy both looked up to George, as he was a couple of years older than they. Easy to see why.

The guy was a badass. Is STILL. :killer:

Actually, those 3 players are still my holy trinity (though I've added many disciples over the years to that list - as well as adding Hendrix and Beck to deity status IMO..lol).

Post your favorite Lynch solo, shred moment, gear talk, whatevs.

I'd like to be out in the dessert just shredding with my amps on 10. I read that his original bengal guitar got all of its lacquer checking from being in the overhead compartment of a flight he was on years ago. the pressure cracked it all over.

I've never heard that, and I (as well as a lot of people I know) travel with my guitar in the overhead. It did happen to my oldest parts mutt's (mostly) Krylon finish when it got rapidly exposed to temperature extremes (went from winter cold to sitting in front of a space heater - cracked before our very eyes, it was wacky!)...pretty sure the original Bengal is spray-can paint, too...

But yes, I would LOVE to blast through a wall of cabinets in the desert. I just got to blast through a couple of them at a gig in a huge state park over the holiday...fun stuff, but didn't get near 10, unfortunately!

Here's a segment on his amps...

I don't remember where I read it, but when I was researching it to build my own I came across it in an interview. Behold, the Warmoth neck/body Bengal. The white feathering turned out to not be as hard as I thought it would.

George is soo depreciating isn 't he?

According to his bio, he's 56 now (actually only a year or two older than EVH, or Rhoads had he lived)...He can still rip when he wants too, but I don't think he's ever surpassed the "Wicked Sensation" era as far as sheer ferocity...and I'm not saying that in a bad way...

He's funny as shit in person, dude. First time I met him was in '90, ended up talking shop with him, told him "I started using 1 3/4" nut-width necks because of you and EVH and now I hate everything else!" and he's like "Are they AWESOME or what? I have some 2" wide ones now, too!" I asked "How are they?" he says "GREAT for leads - absolutely sucks for rhythms!" Then we talked about influences (his: everyone) and I said "Your vibrato rules. I totally stole that, btw." and he goes all mock-incredulous and yells "You FUCK!" Then he says "That is so cool when someone says that. It never gets old." He said something to the effect of he's still such a fan of guitar players himself it still wows him that he's considered "influential". Super nice dude, loves to talk gear and playing.

Speaking of the Wicked Sensation era...sound quality on this sucks, but he is ripping...also the only times I think I've seen him playing (what looks to be) a PRS...?

On a comedic note, the bass player needs more fans blowing his hair...I look at this and have to wonder if it's where Steel Panther got the idea for Lexxi's "hair solo"...:hee:

This sounds better...

Yep, his vibrato rules...... immaculate tone, killer phrasing and tons of originality! Love his playing but in all honesty......wish he had a better band than Dokken, just my opinion. In all honesty....I dug Lynch Mob! I wish they would've found someone other than the"guitars-up-front" production of Max Norman. That was a kickass band, and if I had to choose between Oni Logan or Don Dokken as frontman, I'd pick Oni anyday of the week (twice on Sundays). I believe that when George wanted to replace Dokken....he did it right.

Don was a power-mad sleazeball intent on serving up fluffy pop-bullshit, which inhibited Lynchs capabilities.....with the Mob, he was able to unleash his full potential. I only wish that Oni wasn't relegated to being in the background.....I believe he was an incredible frontman with awesome range.

He did everything a frontman was supposed to do.....bring in the bitches and display amazing vocal ability.

"Wicked Sensation" is one of the most badass CDs ever made....EVER!

Navarro joined Janes Addiction in 1986.

If we assume it takes him 15 minutes a day to do and maintain his nail polish that's 15 x 365 x 24 years / 60 hours so 2190 hours.

I think if he had spent an extra 2190 hours practising he would maybe have looked a bit less completely out his depth.

Not really understanding the Navarro hate here. I saw Jane's Addiction last year, and he had one of the biggest and heaviest guitar sounds I have ever heard live.

Navarro may not be in the same 'shred league' as Lynch - something which I am sure he would readily admit - but would anyone deny that Jane's Addiction are an infinitely superior band to Dokken or Lynch Mob? Yes, it's subjective but if we think in terms of originality, songwriting and just pure musical depth, JA were a damn fine band.

Being a superb technician is one thing, but being a great songwriter in a band that was truly unique is another. Alongside EVH and RR, Lynch may have been part of a 'trinity' of heros in the late '70s, but do you know what really separates him from the other two? He's never played on a classic, or written a classic song. He may have written some good stuff, but 'Back For the Attack' is no 'Fair Warning' or 'Blizzard of Oz' is it?

And it ain't no 'Nothing Shocking' either.

That may all be true but he's a man in his 40s wearing black nail polish who instead of saying 'I'm not very good' hacks away in the clip whilst looking over at Lynch expecting his approval. I'm no better but I haven't been doing it full time as my job for 25 years.

I don't hate the guy...I dig Jane's. I was gonna say I respected him for tapping Carmen Electra but then the I remembered two words "Dennis Rodman" but I'll still give him props. Dokken did write some cool pop-metal tunes..."The Hunter" springs to mind, but agree there's no one album where you could say is among the 80s "classics". You could say that about several of Lynch's solos in semi-forgettable songs, but we all know the song is king...

It's nuts that Navarro made money as a guitarist.

This is like Rembrandt painting whilst a retarded kid smears paint and shit on the floor saying 'Like this?'

The first time I ever saw Dave Navarro was in a guitar magazine ad. He was in fish net stockings, nipple rings, lot's of eye liner. I just looked at the picture and thought,"Who in the fuck is this poof?" John 5 took the same freaky deek gimmick but John 5 can actually play his instrument.

Our chubby little friend is pretending to have just on a whim come up with the idea of getting Lynch to show him Mr Scary.

I would bet at least one if not both of my balls for immediate extraction that the cupcake emo spent a few hours practising that riff so he could pretend to be able to learn it on the spot.

Sad.

It's the pathetic ego thing that annoys me. He honestly thinks that people are interested in his guitar farts. Shush George I want to hear Mr Farty's version...

I started seeing Navarro when he was doing hosting duties for various things. Guitarist for Janes Addiction? I remember them. They had a couple cool tunes way back. Don't remember the guitarist though.

Did Janes Addiction really make enough money for this guy to be rich & famous? I swear I only remember 2-3 songs that were kinda popular.

Caught the Lynchmob show at a friend's club 2 weeks ago.

Thought George looked haggard and annoyed. He never even seemed to be aware 120 people were there to see him.

Dokken played my club 4 days later to around 700, and at least engaged the crowd.

He may have missed a few high notes, and may have been a crank backstage, but he outdrew lynch 4 to 1

I would bet at least a couple hundred of those 700 to see Dokken don't really know who George Lynch is or that he isn't in the band anymore. The casual fan who sees the ad for the show in the paper & thinks "whoa cool. I remember Dokken from back in the day. Let's go catch the show. Hope they play Dream Warriors".

I saw Dokken play a similarly small club when Reb Beach was with them. Actually got to hang out with Mick Brown for about 10 minutes before the show. Cool dude. Signed a dollar bill for me. Still have it.

It must be depressing to play to less people every year. If they live long enough they'll end up as buskers.

Was that the show Wilton posted pics from?

Sucks the reunion fell through. They're all getting a little long in the tooth, and the time may have passed now. Levin's a great guitarist, though - nails the Lynch stuff better than Reb Beach did, IMO. Sean McNabb's a bro, was glad when he got the gig as bassist.

I hung with Mick Brown in a bar in Idaho (IIRC) after the Waterstock festival in '06 and he is hysterical, laugh a minute. I've met George a few times, he's cool too - but he and Don don't seem to be able to bury the hatchet for more than 20 minutes at a stretch...:umm:

Lynch regards Richie Kotzen as a "stellar player". That's awesome! Kotzen is one of my favorite guitarists (and songwriters) along with Stevie Salas. Very soulful players.

I'm not sure how good the Lynch disc is gonna do, especially on the tracks with Torien. Last I heard of Marq, his vocal chords are pretty much shot, so it was smart of George to mix it up with different singers. I'd like to hear this disc to hear what he's come up with though.

Cool interview!

Kotzen IS an amazing player. I saw the Bulletboys a couple of times over the last few years, and Torien's voice wasn't terrible, but he couldn't/wasn't trying to hit the high notes like back in the day as much. I'm totally interested to hear this new disc too!

Always liked Lynch....

that cd of covers he put out a few years back was good...espec. the Mountain cover "Blood of the Sun"....

Great guitar player stuck with the worst songwriter this side of Spammy Haggis....i.e. Don Schlokken

I still like Marq. He had to live in his car for awhile after Bullet Boys but never gave up, and in fact found new inspiration to keep going.

George on the GR tour was one of the most realistic (about himself and his talents) commentators than almost any guitarist I have seen when giving an interview; very humble guy there. Least for that part I will bump his rep....along with one of the signature vibrato's in the biz.

May 23, 1991 - Raymond Theater in Pasadena, CA......ABC set up shop to videotape some bands to show on ABC's In Concert '91. The lineup had some chick who I think was Bret Michael's girlfriend at the time....forgettable corporate pop/rock mung, Firehouse (with their squealy oo-baby rock), Little Ceasar, who looked touch but had their share of limp-wristed corporate radio-friendly songs, Roxette, British pop band who was making their US TV debut, and the headliner was Lynch Mob. It was Oni Logan's last gig with them before he left, and he FUCKING SUCKED.

Sounded to me like massive coke-choking on his part. He coulda just had a cold or something, but christ he was bad. Every band on the bill did only 3-4 songs, including Lynch Mob.

Anyway, I taped the In Concert episode when it came on a month later. And just last week I got the VHS tape out to transfer it to DVD. Problem is, the tape was fucked up at one point....all my VHS tapes have been in boxes in my storage shed for the past 8 years, and many of them have mold on the tape itself, so I am in a race to transfer most of them to DVD before they are completely shot.

Watching it reminded me of Oni Logan's performance. And one of the songs has a pretty bad guitar solo by Lynch, with some painful screeching in it. It is not something he would ever want to re-release.

So anyway, that evening in Pasadena I brought in a stereo walkman and a couple of lapel mics. I only taped Firehouse, Little Ceasar and Lynch Mob.

I just now pressed "play", and am transferring the Lynch Mob set to my hard drive as I type this. They performed 4 songs - She's So Evil, River Of Love, Wicked Sensation, and All I Want.

The TV broadcast left out She's So Evil, and the song order was changed (Wicked Sensation, River Of Love, All I want).

This recording turned out pretty good. I am going to remaster this stuff before I burn to CD. Might post in the bootleg section one of these days.

I don't recognize his patterns as he plays.

I think that will be my guitar project later in the year to try and learn the some of the scales/positions he uses because it sounds great.

Sounds Phrygian to me...

Or he's just mixing major and minor pentatonics with an emphasis on the tritone (flat 5)
