I've been getting more into slide lately, and while I never was a huge Allman Brothers fan, Duane Allman and Derek Trucks are among the slide greats.

Here's a video of Trucks talking slide influences and technique...

When he does the Indian-influenced lines he sounds kinda like Jeff Beck, also an amazing slide player...

This does not sound like southern rock...and I dig that about it!

I used to enjoy slide until 93.1 Jack FM went online playing "Freebird" five fucking times a day.

I love to play slide on my acoustic in open tunings. Literally everything sounds like the Delta.

Speaking of Derek Trucks, check out his beautifully warm and respectful tribute to Duane Allman on this all too brief version of "Layla", performed by The Allmans and yes, Eric Clapton. Derek and the Dominos, indeed.

A few tracks (in addition to Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk", Zep's "In My Time Of Dying" and just about anything by Foghat) that made me want to figure out how to play slide.

First off, Rory Gallagher was a bad ass.

The studio version of Johnny Winter's Dylan cover, as all other clips were around 10 minutes long.

David Lindley is a longtime side man for Jackson Browne. He is a dazzling instrumentalist, and his work is instantly recognizable. This is from a solo project El Rayo-X from the early eighties.

And of course, what is more than likely everyone's first exposure to this style of playing. I've included another studio version, mainly because the playing is pristine and it's pretty much how I remember hearing it blasting out of an AM radio (even if this is from that oddly remastered version of Tres Hombres from the ZZ Top Six Pack).

I have two open tunings I like: DADGAD is my home plate, and the second is one where I modify three strings off that which I won't detail - you'll have to play around to find my tuning and find my stuff in order to know what I'm talking about so I'll just post about how cool DADGAD is.

It's the best, because you can do so much if you want to do both fretwork AND slide. To me it's the most expressive.

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Lbx42gmo9AE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Lbx42gmo9AE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Look at the C sharp minor shape this guy's talking about 1:50, I like that sound alot

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x8iXYPa911c?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x8iXYPa911c?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IReW-abepAM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IReW-abepAM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

When I was in my late teens, I thought I'd "invented" DADGAD, but I showed my amazing invention to Chet Thompson at Dr Music in Pasadena, he goes "oh that's nothing new - alot of Zeppelin stuff is in that its called DADGAD" so much for independant development.

Guitar theory goes back to the harp and psaltry roughly 4,000 years so you can't really invent anything theory-wise or tunings-related, it's all been done. But one thing you can do, is write new tunes and nobody can knock you for that.

I play slide in standard tuning pretty much exclusively 'cept when I'm on the National... (tuned to open D)

GAR

Open tunings on a 12 string is stellar with all those companion strings droning!

Always wanted a Ric 360/12 or Fender XII for that reason.. but FFS way too pricey.

Rickenbachers have lost half their value in the last few years I know, since I've followed vintage pricing. But the Fender XII, when I started playing as a teen they were $600, then in the late 80s 900 and the last I saw like 3 grand.. the real sixties ones.

Willie Mctell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson, Skip James, Leadbelly and the other vague ones on Yazoo Records back in the 80s, that was slide to me.

None of my other shred pals was into that slide whizzing shit, they though that was stupid but I was into it.

So what kind of slides are you guys using? I have one of the reissue Coricidin bottles and a Dunlop 215....

Diamondjimi
09-09-2010, 01:25 AM
I was using a glass Dunlop, can't remember the exact number. But it was the big fat bastard one for the past 15 years.
Ended up dropping and cracking it and I've been using a thinner replacement. Less bulky, I'm enjoying it a lot.
I play slide with my "ring" finger...

Agree. He's another one of those dudes like Jeff Beck in that he can use the bar so well it's almost indistinguishable whether he's using a slide or not...even back in the day:

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lLKu8Rlu-H0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54 abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lLKu8Rlu-H0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54 abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Without straying too far off-topic, bears mentioning Firkins is among the few players, like Greg Howe that none other than Jason Becker calls upon to play the guitar parts for the music he's (still) writing...
