New Music, Memoirs Planned for Ronnie James Dio

The late metal singer's wife to launch a new Dio-centered label in November

When Ronnie James Dio passed away from stomach cancer in May, he was in the midst of launching a record label with his wife and manager, Wendy Dio. The future of the company — which they planned to call Niji Entertainment Group, and would use to release recordings by Dio and other artists — was thrown into doubt. But Wendy Dio now tells Rolling Stone that she will launch the label herself, with several releases scheduled for November. Meanwhile, she has been shopping Ronnie's memoirs with an agent.

Niji will get rolling on November 9th, when they release the double-disc set Dio at Donington UK: Live 1983 and 1987, which collects two vintage performances by Dio's solo group. The '83 performance, Wendy explains, "was the first appearance in the UK of the Dio band — it's very energetic." Four years later, the band came with a different lineup and "a lot more songs under their belt." The first disc represents "a new, young band coming out of the box," says Wendy, "and then the [second disc] is a more seasoned band."

As for the memoirs, Dio completed most of the book before he died. "I'm just going to finish the end parts of it," Wendy explains. "It's actually [intended as] a three-book deal — the memoirs of Ronnie, a book of illustrated lyrics, and a photo book."

Niji plans two other releases this year, both on November 23rd: A reissue of Holy Diver , Dio's 1983 solo debut, on 180 gram vinyl; and Bitten by the Beast, an album by Ronnie's cousin, David "Rock" Feinstein. Feinstein played with Dio in Elf, and also in a band called the Rods. "Ronnie recorded two songs with him last year," Wendy says. "One of the songs is called 'Metal Will Never Die,' and will be featured on that CD."

Wendy also turned up a few more tracks recorded after "Metal Will Never Die." These were intended for parts two and three of the Magica series, which Dio launched in 2000. " He wrote one song, called 'Electra,' which we put on the Tournado box set, which was just 1,500 copies," Wendy says. "Then he'd written two or three more songs. They will be released."

In 2011 the label will release a mammoth 16-album vinyl-or-CD box set, For the Record: The Complete Dio Vinyl Collection, plus The Complete Bootleg Box . ("There are a lot of [performances] from strange places," Wendy says of the Bootleg Box . "It will span over all the years that we have"). Also forthcoming: Elf vinyl reissues, and a DVD release of the import VHS video, Super Rock Japan 1985.

Will scoop up the 1983/1987 dvd, as well as the 1985 dvd when released.

Dunno about the 16 disc vinyl set...I mean, I dig Dio, but not quite that much.

I've had the bootleg version of Donington '83 for a few years and it's always been one of my favorite DIO concerts.
A must have for DIO fans.
Getting the 83/87 disc this week.
Is there a DVD version of the '83 show out there?

Release show greatness of Ronnie James Dio

By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press – Wed Nov 10, 2:00 pm ET

Dio, "At Donington UK: Live 1983 & 1987" (Niji Entertainment); Heaven and Hell, "Neon Nights" (Eagle Rock)

It goes on and on and on.

Ronnie James Dio, the legendary heavy metal singer who starred with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his self-titled solo band, died last May after a battle with stomach cancer. Now, a torrent of live material capturing some of his most brilliant moments is being released.

First up is a 2-CD set of live Dio shows at England's Castle Donington Festival in 1983, during his first solo tour, and 1987, when Dio was well into his third incarnation as a platinum-selling artist. The 1983 disc is full of the raw fury and speed that marked Dio, the band he wasted little time launching following his first go-round with Black Sabbath. It races from the gate with guitarist Vivian Campbell's frenetic licks on the classic concert opener "Stand Up And Shout," and mixes in Black Sabbath classics "Children Of The Sea" and his signature tune, "Heaven And Hell" (versions of which appear on all three of the discs reviewed herein.)

In a nod to history, Dio also includes Rainbow classics "Stargazer," "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Starstruck," but infuses them with a breakneck speed and sense of urgency that Ritchie Blackmore never did.

The 1987 disc finds Dio in chart-dominating form, with a string of solo hits under his belt and a constant presence on FM rock radio. Tracks like "Dream Evil," "Rock And Roll Children" and "The Last In Line" continue in heavy rotation even today on satellite radio. In this disc, Campbell is replaced by guitarist Craig Goldy, whose solos are more fluid and less combustible, but mesh perfectly with the more radio-friendly tracks this later incarnation of Dio lays down. It also includes Sabbath gem "Neon Knights," and Rainbow's anthemic "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll."

Also out this month is "Neon Nights," a CD and DVD set by the Black Sabbath incarnation that toured under the name Heaven And Hell. It was recorded in July 2009 at the Wacken Festival in Germany, either as or just before Dio was battling the stomach cancer that would ultimately take his life in May.

His bravura performance is all the more remarkable: a man in his late 60s, possibly battling a fatal disease, rocking out with the soaring vocals and regal stage presence of someone in his 20s. This recording finds Dio shining brightly alongside Sabbath founders Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice, who followed Dio from Sabbath to solo and back again.

"Die Young," "Heaven And Hell" and "Neon Knights" have never sounded better, and provide a fitting send-off for one of the greatest voices in the history of heavy metal. The DVD also includes tribute interviews from the surviving band members.
