NEIL DIAMOND, the American singer-songwriter who turns 70-years-old today (24th January 2011), says he still thinks of himself as a 'rock star' and was pleased to hear that he will be inducted into the 'Rock n Roll Hall of Fame' come the ceremony in March, reports Rolling Stone Magazine. Diamond, who headlined the BBC's 'Electric Proms' back in October 2010, will be recognised for his services to rock music alongside ALICE COOPER, TOM WAITS and DARLENE LOVE at the New York awards show.
When asked for his first reaction upon hearing news of the induction, Diamond said, "I think it's great. I'm happy that that they recognized me and my work. Any club that has Chuck Berry and Little Richard and The Everly Brothers is a club that I want to be a part of". The singer is scheduled to hit the road for a world tour next month but says he is looking to rearrange a concert in Australia so that he can attend the 'Hall of Fame' show, saying, "I'll get in somehow. I'm very hopeful because I don't want to miss this". Diamond, who recently begun collaborating with legendary rock producer RICK RUBIN, received critical acclaim for his 2005 album '12 Songs' and last year's 'Dreams'.
The singer's tour, which begins in Auckland on 28th February 2011, will pass through Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, before moving on to South Africa. He is expected to announce plans for the US leg of the tour soon.
