Authorities: Argentine woman plunges from 23rd floor of hotel, hits taxi roof and survives

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Witnesses say they saw a woman throw herself from the 23rd story of a Buenos Aires hotel Monday and survive.

The woman landed in a sitting position on the roof of a taxi whose driver got out just before the impact deeply dented his roof and shattered the windshield.

The woman, a 30-year-old Argentine, was rushed to the nearby Hospital Argerich, where she was being operated on for injuries including internal bleeding and broken hips and ribs, Alberto Crescenti, director of Argentina's Emergency Medical System, told the government news agency Telam. He estimated that she fell nearly 100 metres (330 feet).

The taxi driver, Miguel Cajal, told the C5N television station that he jumped out of the car because he saw a policeman stopping traffic and looking up. Moments later, the driver's side of the car was smashed by the woman's body.

Another taxi driver, Juan Carlos Candame, told Associated Press Television News that he saw the woman climb over a railing at the edge of the building and appear to exchange a few words with someone before jumping into the void.

"I looked up and I saw a girl that was going over the railing while another person was talking to her," Candame said. "Then she walked to the edge, went back to talk to the other person, then she turned around and she jumped."

The woman plunged from the top of the Hotel Crown Plaza Panamericano, where a restaurant overlooks the landmark Obelisk in downtown Buenos Aires.

Weird...I saw this just last evening when TNT played The Dark Knight. The Joker threw Rachel Dawes off a balcony, and yup, she landed on a taxi. OK, Batman broke her fall, but still...

Wow, the cabs are much nicer in Argentina than I expected!

They are incredibly cheap too.

A 15 minute journey across the city for about $1

The finest steak in the world followed by salsa dancing and fine rum until dawn at a luxurious polo club.

Like parts of the US there is some terrible poverty in Argentina but the people at the top are very good to themselves and it's so cheap that you too can be at the top.

It's amazing she survived that, so far at least.

It would have taken 5 seconds for her to hit the taxi by which time she would have been doing about 80mph.

Yet she would have needed to be in flight for at least 12 seconds to reach a terminal velocity of roughly 120 or so miles per hour. Even then, the speed of the fall isn't necessarily in and of itself critical to the equation. The rather painful thump at the end however, certainly would be.

You mean other than people smashing through the drivers side at 100+ mph...but yeah, other than that they look pretty nice.;)

Yeah, it's not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at the end.

If she would have hit water it would have killed her. Water does not compress and becomes like concrete when hit at high velocities.

The roof of the cab behaves like an air bag. It's just thin sheet metal that has give and the interior of the cab is full of air. If the doors and windows were closed there is air pressure that would act like a balloon. I had a BMW that if you slammed the door shut too fast it wouldn't close because the air seals were so good.

I've been to Argentina and the steak is grass fed there. It's not bad but I would still put Wyoming meadow grazed black angus up against it.

She must have been a fat lady, and all that extra padding cushioned her landing on the taxi cab.

I think Ace would have survived that fall if he did a belly flop on the taxi cab.

Remember the old classic VW Bugs? I remember if the windows were rolled up & you slammed them shut when you got in, sometimes your ears would pop...or at least feel a lot of pressure build-up. Air tight little fuckers. Me & a neighbor chick rolled up the windows & smoked a joint inside of her older sisters bug. Couldn't even see each other through the smoke by the roach end.

The story used to be that VW bugs were watertight so that if you did a Teddy Kennedy no water would come in at all but looking back now I think that was probably an urban legend.

I've never been to Wyoming but the Argentinian stuff is world famous. In a couple of places I was at they carved the steak with a spoon...

No, they really did float...for a while. After several minutes, water would seep in and down they'd go. But they'd remain afloat long enough to cross a canal, or film a car commercial...

I bought an old beetle to turn into a baja bug and the original seals were so good it would still make your ears pop. This was a car with most the paint gone and a few rust spots on it but those original rubber seals still did the job.

Possibly, but as fate would have it, he would have bounced off and crushed the family of six who were patiently waiting for the cab they had called for in the first place.

No, that's not an urban legend as my oldest brother used to drive his bug into our pond, circle around in it a couple of times and drive out. One time, he had both my older brother and I (when we were little kids, I think I was 5) in there with him when he did it, and some vents or something came open on it and it sunk. He had to get both of us out of there and on the roof before it went completely under. Later on my dad went down there and pulled the bug out with the tractor, and on the way home my brother decided he would try to start it to see if it would crank. Well, it fired right up and he drove it the rest of the way home. True story.

What are the last things Bobby Kennedy said to Ted Kennedy?

The Kopechne broad puts out, and the brakes on the Buick pull to the right.
