Former Thin Lizzy guitarist Moore dies

Former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore has died at a Costa del Sol hotel.

The musician was found dead in his room at the luxury Kempinski Resort Hotel in Estepona in the early hours of this morning. A postmortem is due to carried out later today in the nearby city of Malaga.

Moore (58) from Belfast is understood to have been on holiday at the time of his death.

A spokesman for the British Foreign Office said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Estepona. We stand ready to offer consular assistance.”

Moore played with Thin Lizzy for several periods as well working with the band's lead singer Phil Lynott, who died in 1986 after falling into a heroin-induced coma.

Moore worked with a number top artists, including Bob Dylan.

He had a string of top 40 hits in the 1970s and 1980s including Parisienne Walkways in 1979 and Out in the Fields in 1985.

Still not a lot of news items available yet. I found out via a tweet from Glenn Hughes.

Very sad news. 58 is far too young to go.

Yep, I found out via one from Reeves Gabrels. Sucks, he was a huge early influence on me...when I was a kid "The End of the World" solo was like "Eruption"; you couldn't leave the house calling yourself a guitarist unless you could play it.... RIP :(

Initially Green loaned Moore the guitar, but subsequently Green sold it to him. Moore also wound up in a lawsuit filed by Ronnie Montrose (http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/05/18/Guitar.pdf), over yet another guitar.

I read an article on Green years ago about how when he "snapped" he was giving away his prized possessions because owing them was antithetical to his new-found Christina beliefs and the name Gary Moore showed up as the new owner of his rare Les Paul.

Just listened to some of Gary - he was a tremendous talent.

(Reuters) - Rock guitarist and former Thin Lizzy star Gary Moore has died in Spain, British media reported on Sunday. The Belfast-born musician was 58.

According to the Irish Times website, Moore was found dead in his hotel room in Estepona early in the morning. A postmortem was due to be carried out in the nearby city of Malaga, the newspaper added.

A Foreign Office (Ministry) spokeswoman in London said: "We are aware (of Moore's death), and we stand ready to provide consular assistance. We are very sorry for his family's loss."

Moore was just 16 years old when he moved from Belfast to Dublin in 1969 to join Skid Row, which featured Phil Lynott as lead singer.

Moore was later brought into Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, best known for hit songs like "Whiskey in the Jar" and "The Boys Are Back in Town."

He replaced the departing Eric Bell, who told the BBC: "I still can't believe it. He was so robust, he wasn't a rock casualty, he was a healthy guy. He was a superb player and a dedicated musician."

As well as playing with Thin Lizzy for several periods, Moore worked separately with Lynott, who died in 1986 from drug-related complications.

Moore also worked with a number of top artists, including George Harrison.

Major fan of his since the 70's. Fuck, he was an amazing guitarist who played with passion, melody and fire...
Same as Jay was sayin, huge influence on my playing when I was younger and finding my way around the guitar. So true, if you were gonna challenge yourself as a player and strived for new levels in your playing, Gary's solo on "The End of the World" was a must to nail down..

Sad to see him go...

One of Gary Moore's most ripping performances wasn't even on one of his own albums. This track is called "Killer", written by Moore and Don Airey and was recorded live in the studio for Cozy Powell's Over The Top album in 1979. The line-up consists of one of the most ferocious bands ever assembled:

Gary Moore - Guitar
Jack Bruce - Bass
Don Airey - keys
Cozy Powell - drums

Towards the end, the band erupts into a spirited blues jam. In the early nineties, Moore and Bruce would form a short lived band with drummer Ginger Baker called BBM.

Yet another Airey/Moore barn-burner, "The Blister" was recorded for Powell's 1981 album Tilt.

Gary Moore - Guitars
Don Airey - Keys
John Cook - Keys
Cozy Powell - drums

Wow. What a bummer.

Haven't had much use for what he's done since the late 1980s, but he was a motherfucker of a guitar player. Got to see him in a small club in 1987, trying to break the Wild Frontier album in the US. It was Moore, Bob Daisley, Eric Singer and Neil Carter on keyboards/backing guitar. When I mean small, like this club (the Living Room in Providence, RI) could get MAYBE 500 people in there if it was PACKED, which it was on the night Moore was there. Totally surreal seeing Daisley up there, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of Eric Singer, who had a monsterous sound.

Great sound, great tunes...I mean, Moore could have easily phoned the gig in as it must have been a letdown from being a headlining act filling larger arenas in the UK going to play small venues in the US. It was clear he wasn't treating it like some nothing jerkoff club date. The band did an extended version of Out In The Fields that was totally brilliant. I just remember players like Vivian Campbell and John Sykes in the early 1980s giving interviews raving about how great Moore was, and I was like "who"? Then I started getting into the Victims of the Future era stuff...Wild Frontier is still a great fucking album.

Always saddened me that he finally got his US hit by toning his act down to that commercialized Eric Clapton style pop blues biz in the early 1990s, because Moore fucking ROCKED.

RIP

Believe it or not, that is yet another tune that debuted on Cozy Powell's Over The Top album. The song was dedicated to Jeff Beck, and was performed by Clem Clempson, in a version I prefer to Moore's.

Odd that Ozzy ended up working with him, since he had earlier referred to Moore as "an ugly nasty cunt" when he was a possible candidate for Randy Rhoads' replacement in 1982.

He asked him to stand in the weeks just after Rhoads died, not surprisingly Bernie Torme was not his first choice.

Allegedly Moore dismissed the idea out of hand or didn't even reply and Ozzy then described him in an interview as having a face like a welders bench.

I guess it must have all have been a misunderstanding and they made up.

I was shocked. Checked a couple more news websites to make sure it's true... I thought it was one of those jokes that radio stations pull all the time for artists they don't like, and somehow it ends up making it on a national level. On a yearly basis, the classic rock radio station in Tampa here always makes up a bullshit story on how Angus Young or Slash were "found dead" about 200 times. It's stupid. But, God Bless Gary Moore. He will be missed.

Until, oh, what the fuck was the name of the one he put out right before Wild Frontier...Under Cover (?) Until that one came out, you could never find any of his stuff short of a record store specializing in imports.

Same went for Alcatrazz, Merciful Fate, any pre Balls To The Wall Accept...LOTS of good shit that just wasn't carried by major record stores, probably so they could stock another few thousand copies of Thriller...

Former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore died from a suspected heart attack, an initial post-mortem examination has found.

Forensic experts told a court in Spain's Costa del Sol that the Ulster rocker died of natural causes, hours after starting a six-day holiday with a girlfriend.

Last night it emerged his funeral is likely to be held in Brighton, where the 58-year-old had been living, rather than his home city of Belfast.

Moore was found dead in a hotel room during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Although he had a successful solo career it was for his time in Thin Lizzy that Moore will be best remembered.

Yesterday, as tributes continued to pour in for the legendary guitarist, former Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof hailed him as “one of the greats”.

“His playing was exceptional and beautiful. We won't see his like again,” he said.

Paramedics were called around 4am on Sunday to the five-star Kempinski Resort Hotel in Estepona after Moore's girlfriend raised the alarm.

While forensic experts are satisfied he died from natural causes, they requested further tests on tissue samples taken from his body ahead of a final report.

A Spanish police spokesman said last night: “Mr Moore died of natural causes and his death is not in any way suspicious.

“An investigating magistrate has opened a standard inquiry to determine the exact cause of death.”

It is understood a judge has already given permission for Moore's brother Glen, who arrived in Spain yesterday, to repatriate his body.

Although he released numerous solo albums, which ranged from blues to hard rock, it was as a ||member of Thin Lizzy that Moore found fame.

First drafted into the Irish rock group in 1973 after the departure of founding member Eric Bell, Moore later left the band but rejoined in 1977 for Thin Lizzy's Celtic tour de force Black Rose album.

But while Moore left Thin Lizzy on the tour to promote the record, he collaborated with frontman Phil Lynott again on UK hits Parisienne Walkways (1979) and Out In The Fields (1985), which ||reached No5 in the UK charts. Lynott died in 1986 but the music the two musicians created together still has fans worldwide.

Yesterday Geldof said Moore had been a huge influence on later rock acts, particularly bands such as Guns ‘N' Roses, adding that he was also a fine blues guitarist.

“He is one of the great blues players,” he said.

“Axl Rose will say that without Thin Lizzy, you don't get Guns ‘N' Roses and that whole idea of rock and roll, and Gary was sort of fundamental in developing that twin-guitar lyrical thing, like on Parisienne Walkways,” Geldof said.

“But, really, you didn't have to cut the skin hard to find just a great, great blues player, and absolutely one of the best.”

Terri Hooley, the founder of Good Vibrations records, described Moore as “a musical genius”.

“He'll always be remembered as a really jovial, fairly nice guy who could play the guitar and entertain thousands and thousands of people,” he said.

“I think if people go back and go through his back catalogue, they'll find a lot of gems there. One day we should have a statue in Belfast for him like they have a statue for Phil Lynott in Dublin.”

Danny Jones from pop group McFly said Moore was one of his musical heroes.

“I am gutted that one of my idols Gary Moore has died,” he posted online.

“An amazing musician that inspired me hugely. My thoughts are with his family, RIP”.

Rock star Bryan Adams also paid tribute, describing Moore as a “guitarist extraordinaire”.

Sharon Osbourne said she was devastated to hear of Moore’s death, adding he would be sorely missed.

A statement from the official Thin Lizzy Facebook page said: “It is with great sadness we hear of the passing of Gary Moore.

“Our thoughts go out to Gary's family at this time and our memories of Gary and his contribution to Thin Lizzy and music in general will live on forever.”

GARY MOORE Documentary In The Works; Trailer Available - Mar. 1, 2011
A trailer for "White Knuckles & Blue Moods", the forthcoming hour-long documentary on former THIN LIZZY guitarist, noted session player, and blues rock icon Gary Moore, can be viewed below. The film is reportedly being made by Jörgen Holmstedt and Stefan Mossberg, who've been working on it for several years. It includes contributions from Don Airey, Jon Hiseman, John Sykes, Brian Downey, Eric Bell, Brian Robertson and the late Gary Moore himself. A late 2011 release is expected.

According to Ken Sweeney of the Irish Independent, Gary Moore was laid to rest on February 23 in a small village graveyard outside Brighton, England.

Moore's family decided to hold his funeral not in Belfast, Ireland, where he was born, but near where he had made his home in the past 15 years and where his children live.

Lily, one of the guitarist's four childen, spoke of her father as "a man with rather colorful shirts, who possessed a childlike quality and was an inspiration to many and the kind of person you could never forget."

THIN LIZZY guitarist Scott Gorham told the Irish Independent that he was unaware the service for Moore was taking place.

"No one kept me informed of any arrangements regarding his funeral," he said.

"I'll drive down to Brighton one day on my own and pay my respects," Gorham added.
