The new issue of Rolling Stone - on stands and in the digital archives now - has an exclusive excerpt from Sammy Hagar's new book Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock. In the book Hagar reveals what a mess Eddie Van Halen was when he first met with the guitarist to discuss a reunion tour in 2004. "He finally invited me over to this giant, extravagant house that he and Valerie had built before she split," Hagar writes. "It looked like vampires lived there. There were bottles and cans all over the floor. The handle was broken off the refrigerator door. There were spider webs everywhere."

Eddie also told Hagar how he cured his tongue cancer. "He told me he cured himself by having pieces of his tongue liquified and injected into his body," Hagar wrote. "He also told me when he had his hip replacement, he stayed awake through the operation and helped the doctors drill a hole. What a fruitcake."

Earlier this week we posted the first part of our interview with Hagar – he talked about why he wrote the book and his belief that he'd one day front Van Halen again.

Here's part two, where he speaks out some more about Eddie Van Halen and the future of the band.

The last new Van Halen record came out 13 years ago.
It seems crazy when you say that. I've been out of the band longer than that and the record we made was '92 or '93.

I was talking about the Gary Cherone album in 1998.
Oh. [Laughs]. I didn't know that counted [Laughs hysterically].

Eddie keeps saying that he's recording a new album with David Lee Roth. Do you think that's ever coming out?
I hope so, but I don’t have a lot of faith in those guys’ work ethic. It just seems like they’ve had every opportunity in the world to make a record. They’ve had two singers, and three singers if you want to count Gary. Gary’s a good singer, there’s nothing wrong with him as a singer, he’s a good guy.

They’ve had Dave or me these past few years. If they wanted to be reasonable either one of us would have done a record with that band. I love that band. Eddie’s got his own studio, his brother lives about two miles away, plays drums, Eddie plays guitar, bass, keyboards... Why wouldn’t they make a record in all that time? Something’s really wrong. So to think that that’s fixed now all of a sudden... I have a hard time believing that.

Eddie always claims to have a lot of riffs. I don't know whether they have any actual songs.
That’s what Dave’s job is. That’s what my job was. Eddie was always telling me that Wolfie had all these great song ideas, which I believed. For God’s sake, he’s a kid! He’s fresh as a daisy, man. Bring him in. Let him write all the material and you just kind of produce it and arrange it. But there's some quirk that I don’t quite understand, and I kind of brought it up in the book. I don’t really understand quite where these guys are coming from sometimes. There’s just some quirky problem. They are so dysfunctional over there, and the organization is Ed now. You know? [Laughs] I don’t think there’s much to come.

I will make one statement that you will love: If they do make a record, it better be fucking good. We’ve waited a long time and it better be fucking good, man. Do not make a mediocre record, folks. Because if you do, not only am I gonna be on your ass, but everybody else is too, because it’s been a long time, you’ve had time to put together something great.

Eddie and Dave both seem pretty eccentric these days, but in very different ways. Can you imagine them working together on an album?
Nah, I can’t. They took a long time to get it back together. They aborted about 20 reunions, as we all know. But the last one, I was betting against that too. I thought, ‘Oh this will never happen.’ After I went out and did some shows with Dave and said, ‘Wow, now I understand why these guys can’t get back together.’ You know, they’re both quirky.

They did the reunion, they finally got that done so maybe they’ll finally get a record out. It would be great – the fans deserve some new Van Halen music. And as great a musician as Ed is, he really needs to be more prolific because we need more great music out there. There’s a lot of bad music out there. We need guys like Eddie Van Halen.

F-18's are easy planes to maintain as well. Everything is modules. If you have a problem you simply replace the module instead of trying to trouble shoot the exact problem. They are great looking aircraft as well.

I'm talking about the electronics on the airplane. I would imagine those same bomb racks are on other planes as well since some of those weapons are used with different planes. It sounds like those are designed for a reliability problem if the wires can get in the way of moving mechanical parts. You would think they were have a nice, neat wiring loom out of the way of all that. Military wiring is suppossed to be nice and neat for that very reason.

There's a guy in Driggs, Idaho that has some old eastern block jets he's got flying again. Typical communist construction. Poor fit and finish and the riveting is horrible. Function wise they are great and actually the layout and design of the systems is excellent. Easy planes to work on actually. Getting parts is the problem. I've volunteered to work on some of those to help him keep them flying.

I have thought about doing something like that, as I have 12 years experience with rivet-gun in hand.
The last couple of years I did at Boeing, I was on a crack structural assembly squad whose sole job was to fix all the fuckups made by other less capable sheet-metal mechanics on the 737 fuselage assembly line.

Always wanted to help out in restoring classic warbirds like P-51s, P-38s or P-40s.
Only thing is, my hearing is shot enough as it is, due to decades of blasting out metal music from my stereo, as well as being in bands and blasting out of my 100W Marshall half-stack, not to mention 40-80 hours a week spent in high-noise environments.

What ended my career as a sheet-metal god was the day I had just got done shooting several thousand rivets and my thumb went numb. Supervisor was smart. Ordered me to first-aid, and I never picked up another rivet gun again.

Am glad to be out of that biz.....the benefits and pay were kickass, but the corporate factory bullshit was unreal.

But it would be cool to work on such great old fighter planes.

Well just those two racks were a pain in the ass and were only used on the F/A-18. Everything else was easy to fix.

Now all he has to do is appear on Oprah (or more fittingly, William Shatner's Raw Nerve, because Shatner can make watching paint dry appear to be interesting) and sign up with a Jenny Craig or Subway diet plan. It's a keen way of resurrecting a career without requiring any use of talent, something Hagar never had a great amount of in the first place.

I will buy this book just as I did Dave's. Daves was Daves version of life as he knew it during his time in and out of VH. SAMs will be Sams version of life as he knew it during his time in and out of VH. I think we can all agree BOTH of these guys have untethered egos, and have experienced things we might be able to dream of. As is to be expected, big egos tell big stories and generally embellish them to make them bigger and more exciting, if taken with a grain of salt,it is easy to see thru some of the smoke while ignoring the mirrors. The tone of each book will be quite different. The underlying tone in Daves was, "I want to be in VH again", and as 1985 grew more distant in the rearview, Daves shadow seemed to grow smaller as well, becoming a punchline for late night comedians, playing "clubs" which were more like bars. I think the tone of Sams will be on it's surface disgust and anger bordering on hate which is thinly disguising disappointment. Eds unravelling was witnessed by all of us, his performance and appearance on his
last tour with each guy was embarrassing, arguing over which one saw him at his worst is ridiculous, people walked away from a lot of shows disenchanted. They were given a wide berth on the reunion tour, seeing Dave with ED was the bigger deal than how they sounded together. People here are pissed at Ed for pushing Dave out in the first place, pissed at Sammy for stepping in, pissed at the musical direction, all the while having NO IDEA how they would've sounded if Dave never left. Pissed at Ed for destroying his physical self, pissed at Mike for not taking sides and never saying an ill word about anyone. Who knows what kind of crap was throw his way from either side. We brought in producer Glen Ballard, who made Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, a total pro who really tried to make things happen. We had [new songs] ready within one week. It took three months for Ed to do the guitar parts to three songs and a couple of solos. The Eddie Van Halen I first met could have done that in an hour. When they finally laid down the rhythm-guitar tracks, that was all I needed to sing. I didn't need his guitar solos. As soon as they got that, I went in and knocked out my vocals on all three songs in two hours. Mike came in and we did all the backgrounds in another two hours. Eddie was still asleep. What speaks to me is that Dave's venom, if you can call it that, toward Sammy has been sporadic and low key. Dave's book didn't speak to what a prick Sammy is.
Sammy, on the other hand, has always displayed a lot of venom toward Dave. From the jump, he didn't even know Dave yet insisted on publicy insulting him and holding up signs at concerts during the 5150 era. I can't blame him for taking the brothers' side considering they were employing him but the way he went about it didn't sit well with me. He has eased up somewhat over the years but he is still pretty juvenile about the matter. His "go tell it on the mountain" style of pleading his case is now ironically amusing. It would seem pretty logical in the aftermath of Van Hagar that Sam could see that maybe the brothers were the actual problem and Dave got a raw deal. Instead, it seems that he reasons Dave's departure was deserved but his own departure was a victimization. Sammy just comes across as a big crybaby who can't get out of his own way.

What speaks to me is that Dave's venom, if you can call it that, toward Sammy has been sporadic and low key. Dave's book didn't speak to what a prick Sammy is.
Sammy, on the other hand, has always displayed a lot of venom toward Dave. From the jump, he didn't even know Dave yet insisted on publicy insulting him and holding up signs at concerts during the 5150 era. I can't blame him for taking the brothers' side considering they were employing him but the way he went about it didn't sit well with me. He has eased up somewhat over the years but he is still pretty juvenile about the matter. His "go tell it on the mountain" style of pleading his case is now ironically amusing. It would seem pretty logical in the aftermath of Van Hagar that Sam could see that maybe the brothers were the actual problem and Dave got a raw deal. Instead, it seems that he reasons Dave's departure was deserved but his own departure was a victimization. Sammy just comes across as a big crybaby who can't get out of his own way.
Hagar seems to buy into the propagated myth that he made Van Halen a more successful band when he joined it.

In an interview for his new book, "Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock" at mtvhive.com, Hagar lets go of what even he admits might make him "sound like a crazy person" to some readers.

He and the reporter are talking about dreams he claims to have had about UFOs, and when asked whether he believed he had been abducted, Hagar answers: "I think I have."

The reporter seemed surprised. "What? Really? I was kidding. You seriously believe that?" he asks.

Hagar laughs and goes on to explain that a passage in the book described as a dream in which he is contacted by aliens from outer space in California was, in fact, reality.

The tale describes how the beings tapped into his mind through a wireless connection.

"It was real," Hagar told the reporter, according to the story on MTV's Hive website. "They were plugged into me. It was a download situation ... Or, they uploaded something from my brain, like an experiment."

Hagar goes on to describe another experience at the age of four where he believes he saw an alien space ship in broad daylight hovering over a country field where his family lived.

The rock guitarist and vocalist is no stranger to wild times. He was a part of several bands, including Montrose, during the "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" era of the 1970s and 1980s, and during its heyday Van Halen was among the biggest acts in rock music.

In his book and in the interview with MTV's Hive, Hagar lets the stories fly on the sex and drugs he did during those years, and he even has a few not-so-nice things to say about another Van Halen lead singer, David Lee Roth, whom Hagar replaced in 1985.

​Judging by the headline, you already know where Rocks Off stands when it comes to Van Hagar versus a David Lee Roth-fronted Van Halen. We love to hate Sammy Hagar, almost to the point where we actually like him a little bit.
We can't even explain that feeling. It's like how when you were young and hitting puberty and you had that weird tinge in your pants when a pretty girl walked by, but replace the like with hate and you have an idea of what we mean.

So when we found out in the recent Rolling Stone interview and various blogs touting his new autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, and now that he claims he was visited and briefly abducted by aliens, we wished that they could have just kept him.

No matter what time in his life he was abducted, it would have infinitely better for the world, whether he was four, 24, 54, or today, or tomorrow. Plus, he's a ginger, and not the cool redheaded chick who scratches your face and sets your car on fire. He-Gingers are cruel and inhuman monsters.

But what's confusing is that back in the '80s he had blonde hair most of the time, like in the "I Can't Drive 55" video. We agree that when you drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer and that you can't get your car out of second gear. What used to take two hours now actually takes all day. Agreed, Sammy.

​If you know us personally, you will remember that we have an almost instinctual hate of Hagar. You can say his name out loud around us and before you get to the second syllable in his last name we will have already said "Fuck Sammy Hagar".
Even when we were young and first getting exposed to Van Halen through MTV and the radio, we knew it was wrong that someone else was singing for the band after David Lee Roth left, like how you are born knowing that murder and rape are wrong, that's how we felt about Hagar.

If only aliens would have kept him instead of throwing him back, we could have maybe had Ronnie James Dio or David Johanssen fronting Van Halen after Roth. Who knows what we would have happened with Hagar, but we sure as shit wouldn't have to have heard "Dreams" or Finish What Ya Started" ever.

Just watch YouTube videos of Halen with Roth and Halen with Hagar. At which party would you be more likely to get laid, drunk, coked-up and/or stoned? Not the Hagar one, where you would have to ask a girl what she was thinking while you massaged her feet after you gave her a pedicure.

Then we take a step back and realize that more than likely that Hagar is a nice guy offstage, which we assume is true by reading interviews. As long as he wasn't singing Van Halen songs on a stage in front of cognizant humans, we could probably kill a bottle of tequila with him, and tell boy stories.

And at 63 years old, he probably has some cool stories to tell, as long they aren't about being in and turning Van Halen into a tall, frosty glass of liquid human shit.

So in essence, him being taken by extraterrestrials would be for the good of mankind, almost making him a savior figure, disappearing from the planet a la Jesus Christ so we wouldn't have suffer the pains of "Why Can't This Be Love?" and "Love Walks In."

But we just listened to "Right Now" three or four times in a row, so now we are torn all over again. OK, where's that cat o' nine tails? We got some self-flagellation to do while we crank "Hot For Teacher."

To me it's all just a desperate grab for attention, trying extremely hard to get into the limelight again, probably knowing full-well that the next VH album could be coming out, and trying to find a way to cash in before he is, yet again, irrelevant.

You wouldn't heard of the Crazy onstage antics and the James Brown meets Frank Sinatra meets Robert Plant sort of frontman that set Van Halen apart from the pack in the late 70's. You wouldn't have seen those Classic Videos that again, propelled Van Halen to superstardom in terms of "Hot For Teacher/Panama". He made that group, for as supposedly "Gay" and unlikeable as you keep calling him, he sure did win over millions of fans, and ensured that you made money by being able to make records with the name "VAN HALEN" on the cover.

So please Sam, do us all a favor. Go Retire with Mikey down in Cabo, and make lov..errr..I mean Chickenshit records, leave us the fuck alone with this shit. No one cares what your experiences with the Van Halen's were, nor how many imaginary number of records you sold. I zipped by Borders during lunch today and knocked this book out in 25 minutes. Very simple and painfully stupid read. It may be #! on the Times bestseller list, but that means absolutely fucking nothing. Snooki and Sarah Palin had books at the top of that list too, and now with the release of Sams book, the trifecta of retardation has now been completed.

It's false advertising to have the word 'autobiography' on the cover, it leads you to believe that it's a book about him and his life. The bulk of Sams waste of perfectly good trees is about Van Halen and Roth.

I liked it better when Art Bell did it. My dad actually knew Art a bit through his ham radio hobby. Art wanted Coast to be a mysterious nighttime paranormal trip. It was great stuff to be driving across Idaho at night on highway 20 or through the nothingness of northern Nevada. I can see why truck drivers like the show so much. George Noorey made the first hours news and current events and then he does two hours of paranormal. He's does a great proffesional job or running the show but for some reason it's less mysterious.

Sammy actually DID make the "tractor driving motherfuckers" remark, but the network feed did not cut away immediately after. However the Nashville Network' s old fart redneck anchors did fall all over themselves apologizing for it, after Hagar's performance was over.

I think they had to make a similar apology after the Guns and Roses set in 1989. In any case, it probably wasn't Sammy's best way of introducing himself to a new audience (given that it was a predominately "country" event.
