View Full Version : Geezer Butler Says No/41 years ago today...Feb. 13

Legendary bassist Geezer Butler has released the following statement via his official web site:

"I would like to make it clear, because of mounting speculation and rumors, that there will be definitely NO reunion of all four original members of BLACK SABBATH, whether to record an album or to tour."

In a January 27 interview with the Los Angeles-based "Mark And Brian Show", which airs on 95.5 KLOS Southern California's Best Rock, SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne said, "I often get asked this question: 'Will there ever be a [new BLACK SABBATH studio] album?' One thing I can say for definite [is] we are all talking, we are all friends. But it's been 30 years since we did a studio album — if it's not something extra, extra special, the people are gonna go, 'We waited 30 years [for this...]' But before my life's over, I would love... my dream is to do the ultimate BLACK SABBATH album; I would love to do that."

Butler previously said in an interview with AOL's Noisecreep that while all four of the band's original members are interested in taking part in a reunion, Ozzy Osbourne's current world solo tour will keep SABBATH on ice for the foreseeable future. Butler explained, "It's not going to happen [in 2011]. Ozzy's on tour with his own band for the next year or whatever . . . I'm sure Ozzy will say 'yes' and 'no' every week for the next year while he's on tour. It's one thing to want to do something like that just before you go out to tour a record. You say, 'Oh yeah, I'm gonna tour for the next five years.' And then six weeks into it, you can't wait to get home. So we'll just see how he feels when he finishes his Ozzy Osbourne tour."

The original SABBATH lineup of Ozzy, Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward has not toured together since the summer of 2005, and last convened for their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in early 2006.

In a 2010 interview with Sunday Mercury, Iommi said that he didn't rule out another reunion with Osbourne. Following the death of singer Ronnie James Dio last May, with whom Iommi had been working in the SABBATH offshoot HEAVEN & HELL, Iommi told Sunday Mercury, "I spoke to Ozzy while I was in Los Angeles after Ronnie's funeral . . . Ozzy and I have a complicated relationship but we've always kept in touch, no matter what else might have been going on. Would I play with Ozzy again? Who knows? It's weird with me and Ozzy."

Iommi added, "There can be all sorts of shit going on but when we talk, it's like nothing bad has ever happened."

SABBATH did try to record a new album 12 years ago, their first since 1978, but abandoned the attempt after just a couple of songs.

Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Iommi in May 2009, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

I don't want a new Ozzy Black Sabbath album the same way as I don't want a new Led Zeppelin one.

The legacy is perfect the way it is and an album of ANY quality would only taint it at this stage of the game.

i gotta agree........for a case in point, i would cite KI$$ "Psycho Circus" album.
the title track "Psycho Circus", Ace's song "Into The Void" and "I Pledge Allegiance To The State Of Rock And Roll"
are the only decent songs on that record, to my ears anyway, just IMO,
this album proves why making a new album was a bad idea........especially since Gene and Paul
Deliberately went out of their way to make sure that Ace And Peter played as little as possible on that record.

as for Black Sabbath making a new record with Ozzy........
"Psycho Man" and "Scary Dreams" showed a lot of promise that if they had done it at the end of the '98/'99 reunion tour,
it could have turned out killer........
"Selling My Soul", is turd.
shit lyrics, drums are a drum machine that sucks, although Ozzy sang it well, and Tony played shitty.
geezer played a crap bass line, and the solo was weak.

however, "Who's Fooling Who", although lacking Geezer, was a much better track from the 1st "Iommi" album.......
speaking of, has anyone got a copy of the 1st Iommi album?
i know it's OOP, but i've been trying to get it still......
anyone feeling like sharing, it would be much appreciated.
thanks.

I was watching a documentary on Sabbath the other evening, and Geezer off-handedly mentioned that he'd been listening to Holst's The Planets, (with the piece "Mars" in particular) early in the band's career. He'd played the track for Tony Iommi, and this is where the riff for "Black Sabbath" came from. Interestingly, the same motif would be used over a decade later on the track "Zero The Hero" from the Born Again album.

Yep, Ozzy is toast and the only interesting Black Sabbath in the last decade was Heaven and Hell......Dio still had it both as a vocalist and as a creative artist.

Ozzy has neither.

If it comes down to power chords and loud drums, Link Wray had everyone beat back in 1958. By the way, this is the only instrumental ever banned by radio!

How coincidental that I had a gig in Albany, NY yesterday (a 3 hour and 45 min drive each way) and what did I listen to on the way? The entire Black Box set; all 8 original Sabbath Albums.
It put me in the right mood to do a Disco Gig. Ha!

We've already had the reunion as a series of extensive tours. There's no need for more.

They will play together again. It's inevitable. It just won't be soon.
I was fortunate enough to catch them twice on Ozzfest 2004 and 2005.
And it's true. Ozzy is burnt toast. But for all his wife's evil bullshit, I still kind have a soft spot for the old bastard. Those old records were fucking brilliant.

My ears say no to a Sabbath reunion and I have all their albums.
I'm committed to destroying what's left of my hearing by listening to Sabotage at painful volumes whilst I turn over furniture with a sick grin.

You realize that Ozzy can't sing Hole in the Sky anymore right?

How much balls do you think that song would have when he's singing it a fifth lower?.
Maybe they should pull a Journey and get some guy that can sing off of YouTube.

Sir. I am not Ozzy nor BS nor Randy. I did not write the songs nor claimed any of the lyrics. I was just pointing out that the riff of Over the Mountain appealed to the ear of Ozzy because it is the same 3 notes...just sped up of the original music post.

deep purple in rock came out in 1970 also, after the Black Sabbath album.
don't get me wrong, in rock is my personal favorite record by deep purple, and the 1st studio record of the mkII line-up.

I dunno...was lucky enough to catch Heaven and Hell in 2007, and at no time during the show was I wishing that I was at an original Sabbath reunion show instead. They were THAT fucking good, and Ozzy today is just too far past it for me; the thrill is gone...kinda vanished around the time of Bark At The Moon.

Ozzy has just become so lazy vocally; I can't imagine Sabbath having to tune down even lower than the original recordings to accomodate his present-day vocal abilities. In addition, I really don't feel like lining Sharon's pockets. Ozzy these days is just a joke to me, and I'd just as soon remember what he did in Sabbath and his first two solo records by (as others have stated) simply listening to the records. I'll admit I'm not the most avid Sabbath fan ever (although certainly more than a casual one), but there it is.

vh rides again
02-13-2011, 10:29 PM
you guys talk about ozzy like he was able to sing 20 years ago. hes been outa breath since i was 15. he can still sing the old ones though. war pigs, fairys wear boots.

fuck i remember seeing him with a broken leg, a puss gut from hell, and he shaved his head. he looked like hell and sang the same as he does today. that had to have been 28-30 years ago.

Hardrock69

It is a trip to listen to the first BS albums from the early 70s, when he COULD actually sing. Sure, he was never a singer with any real technique, but he could at least sing.

And his style gave Sabbath that truly spooky quality back in the early days. Tone of his voice was just perfect for what they were doing.

First heard Paranoid on an 8-track stereo at a pinball joint across the street from the high school I went to. Did not hear the album until 1976. Really tripped me out.

But I ceased to really care about him after the early 90s. When he said he was going to retire, he retired in my book. His shows with BS were just nostalgia concerts.

H & H was the shit. Fortunate enough to have seen them twice since they reformed and I saw them twice in 1980 and 1983 as "Black Sabbath".

Goddammit, I know the fucking Grammy awards suck fucking ass, but this is a new low: They were showing a montage of all the musicians who died in the past year. No they did NOT include Gary Moore.

Anyway, they would show multiple images at once, while playing music of one of the people shown.

Ronnie James Dio was shown on the same screen as an image of the guy from the Knack, and the cocksuckers played "MY SHARONA" as the song-clip!

THOSE FUCKING BASTARDS!

FUCK THOSE WORTHLESS GODDAMNABLE FUCKS!!!

dude, the grammy awards are a fucking joke.
c'mon, any commitee that is going to award the very first heavy metal grammy to jethro tull,
who are clearly neither hard rock nor heavy metal, over metallica,
when metallica was clearly the right choice at that time 1989,
such a gathering is full of utterly clueless tree hugging hippies
and never was failed hacks who never had a chance.
the grammy awards has only gotten a few thing right aver the 25 years.
heavy metal grammy awards were given to page & plant, black sabbath, slayer(2x!), and judas priest.
but that is 4 or 5 right out of 21 or 22?
if it were a test at school, that would be a great big "F" for Fail!
