Ok the third song in the original post starts with...broken glass. If you go to 2:58 on Sadaist's post you will see where Dave yells "Cut...nobody has bare feet right?" So this is why you are here. It is why perhaps you are the only spot on a dark horizon. "shoo bop". So if you think "A Little is not enough for me" (ellipsis) Why not anticipate a new album? Ignore the noise....put the heat on. You were doing so great in this thread all by yourself that I didn't want to spoil it for you. :hee:

As far as old time rap, I have quite a bit on my computer. Being the only one in my family that downloads tunes, all the nieces & nephews give me their lists of what they would like me to get them. Everyone has different tastes, so I have quite a bit of disco & rap.

Disco never died, it just transmogrified slowly into rap music.

The old pre-1990 is a lot more fun than the gangster rap that followed it. I don't know man. The 80's everyone was happy and partying and the music matched that. Some reason in the 90's everyone was pissed off. The 2000's everyone was depressed.

Funny how that all lines up with Dave leaving Van Halen, Sammy fronting Van Halen, being teased with Dave coming back.....

2010's are going to be happy again. Starting with a fresh new VH album.

You Bet Ford. On the edit on the original post of mine you have the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Spoken word and music (lyrical ballads) go together. Charlie Daniels raps a story. Nice Call Elvis. Now...lol on that demo of Running with the Devil...can someone help me with Dave's Outro Rap? So far the people that have heard it with me get .."Purple people eaters and nurple purple..." But I am sure you people can do better with the transcription.

And as an aside: I got to see Run DMC and Beastie Boys twice on the tour where Beastie Boys got thrown out of England....lol got to see them at Hammersmith..... great concert.

I miss old school rap. Here's a guilty pleasure of mine:

Here's a cat with a sense of humor and a positive message. He's got crazy flow.

It's safe to say Young MC ain't hurtin for cash as much as "Bust A Move" gets licensed so I won't embed that one.

I was a kid when this came out and had no idea WTF he was talking about but it was cool..

This is a bit off topic as it came out in 91 but Third Base gets the award for best use of a Peter Gabrielle sample.

Now let the attacks begin..

Rap was never cool or fun. It just seems cool, fun and innocent compared to the fucking swill it became.

to totally discount an entire music genre in that way is .....perhaps a bit thoughtless...

I'd have to say that there is good and bad...(although it is not my favorite "sound")
just like there is good and bad rock...
and Classical that I enjoy and some that I don't...

I enjoyed rap for a bit in the mid to late 80's. Some of the stuff i enjoyed:

1. 2 Live Crew - Move Something
2. Sir Mixalot - Swass
3. Kool Moe Dee - Self titled
4. Whodini - first record with Friends and Freaks Come Out at Night

In 88 i went and saw a rap show in Birmingham, AL and 2 Live Crew was the headliner. The other acts supporting were
Eazy E, M.C. Hammer, Sir Mixalot, Ton Loc, and J.J. Fad.
It was a great line up but there were fights breaking out all over the arena all night long. 2 Live Crew's d.j. was playing their albums including lyrics and the band was just rapping over themselves. Their monitors went out midway thru a song and they couldn't hear where they were in the song, so you had the record playing with them rapping on the record coming out of the speakers and Luke trying to figure out where he was supposed to be rapping. He ended up throwing his mic down and leaving the stage 3 songs into their set which nearly caused a riot. After about 10 minutes they were convinced to come back and do one more song - "Hey We Want Some P....." The funny thing was that all of the acts came out with 2 Live Crew and they all sang it together so you had M.C. Hammer up there singing that chorus which to me was hysterical. After the show was over, me and my friends were walking in the corridor and 200 screaming people came running at us so we ducked behind some brick columns to avoid being trampled. Turns out someone pulled a gun further down the corridor sending people into a panic. Rap wasn't very fun that night.
