    William Shatner - Honorary Metalhead

    I'll be damned....

Official site of record label Elektra Music Group: Elektra Records, Fueled By Ramen, Roadrunner, Low Country Sound, Black Cement, Public Consumption, DTA Records

Last week veteran actor William Shatner teamed up with guitar legend Zakk Wylde at Wylde's studio, The Black Label Bunker, to lay down tracks for a cover of BLACK SABBATH's classic "Iron Man". The song will appear on Shatner's upcoming album, "Seeking Major Tom", which features a collection of sci-fi, space-themed songs. The album is due out on Cleopatra Records later this year.

Of Wylde, Shatner commented, "He's fantastic! I'm energized." Wylde was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Shatner and added, "He's super cool, we had an awesome time working together."

To me, Bill Shatner's Has Been album from 2004 was one of the best albums of the decade. No, I'm not kidding. The recording was produced by Ben Folds, and featured performances from Brad Paisley (who wrote and performed a song for the album), Joe Jackson (who played keyboards and even dueted with Shatner on a brilliant cover of Pulp's "Common People"), and Henry Rollins. Shatner (encouraged by Folds) wrote the lyrics for 8 of the album's 11 songs, and the results were hilarious, insightful and often quite moving.

This is a clip of "Common People", made as a project by some amateur filmmakers and actors from 2007.

Same tune, set to the early seventies cartoon version of Star Trek in an amusing, yet nebulous version.

Dance, drink, and screw because there is nothing else to do. Hey, I would take those three things over fixing the toilet at some dump that never cleans the restroom.

Shatner and Henry Rollins air some grievances...

Another fan-made video, for "It Hasn't Happened Yet".

With Brad Paisley, who wrote, sings and performs the guitar work on "Real".

Dude.....I completely agree that "Has Been" is one of the greatest albums of the past 10 years.

Who woulda thought that a guy who does not sing at all could be part of such a great project?

It was more like music backing up Shatner's original poetry.

The song "What Have You Done" tore me up, because it was about his feelings when he found his wife dead in his swimming pool back in the 90s. It was some kind of accident, but imagine finding your wife, girlfriend, whatever dead under any circumstances.

Sure he has caught a lot of stick over the years about his "hamminess", etc.

But he deserves all the credit he gets. Easily.

I Can't Get Behind That (with Henry Rollins) makes me bust up laughing every time I hear it. He surely has a great sense of humor.

If you haven't had the chance yet, check out Shatner's brutally honest and laugh out loud hilarious 2008 autobiography Up Til Now. It works as a terrific companion piece to the album.

Has Been is a great album, top to bottom. I look forward to this new one.

Susan Oliver, who played Vina the Orion Slave Girl had an incredible career.

Broadway actress, appeared on hundreds of TV shows and movies, as well as theatrical films.

Late 70s she was a director, directing an episode of M.A.S.H. and later an episode of Trapper John M.D.

She was also a pilot, and in 1967 became only the 4th woman to fly a single-engine aircraft across the Atlantic

She died at age 58 of lung cancer.

She was anything but your stereotypical bimbo Hollywood Starlet.

But I woulda done her in a heartbeat!
