I just got home so I hadn't turned the TV on yet, but they appear to have DNA confirmation, according to ABC.

Now I want to examine the body for freezer burn, because I still say the fucker died in 2002.

And by the way, now that there is no longer an excuse for the "war on terra", shouldn't we bring the troops home, shred the "Patriot" Act, and restore some fucking sanity to air travel. AND gas prices.

And you Busheep better HOPE he's been in the freezer. Because if he wasn't, that means Obama got him and Chimp didn't. Can we say.... 2012 LANDSLIDE??

Well, this President did not want us in any of these wars, voted against them, tried to defund them, campaigned against them, and promised to get us out quickly if he was elected.

Now he takes credit for killing Bin Laden and will be viewed a hero.

Funny how shit works.

Seshmeister
05-02-2011, 12:01 AM
Yeah it's all bullshit in a way. US presidents in particular just have to roll dice and take the outcome. For example look at Jimmy Carter, a helicopter breaks down and then another one crashes in a desert in Iran and he is personally at fault and kicked out.

Thatcher takes a big chance launching a war thousands of miles away for an island full of sheep when she is a way behind in the polls and it only takes the deaths of a few hundred troops and she wins a landslide.

Maybe, but something about this ain't passing the smell test. Like this woman that Snuffy just had on the phone on ABC, claiming to be a relative of a passenger on the plane that allegedly hit the Pentagon. This woman was very obviously reading prepared talking points, and not speaking an honest reaction that one would expect from someone just hearing this news.

Here's an ironic twist though.....

8 years to the day that Chimpy put on his Halloween costume and stood in front of a banner claiming "Mission Accomplished", it now appears that the actual mission really WAS. (assuming the BCE 9/11 account is at all true, and we all know I really don't assume that.)

Oil drops, Obama says Osama bin Laden is dead

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Oil prices dropped in Asian trading hours on Monday, down $1.13 at $112.80 a barrel on Nymex. The move came after U.S. President Barack Obama announced late Sunday that Osama bin Laden has been killed. Reports said that bin Laden, leader of the terrorist network Al-Qaida, was killed at a mansion outside the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

Over $150 for a tank of gas...

I needed some kerosene for a project and it was $9 a gallon at the hardware store. What a rip off. I probably could have used diesel and it would have been cheaper. Gas here is $3.50 gallon for 85 octane.

Nitro Express

I see people buying premium gasoline and they are just wasting the money. I only have to go to a higher octane than 85 if I'm pulling a hill above 7,000 feet or running a high compression engine. Basically it's all the same gas. The only thing that changes the octane number is the chemicals that are added at the pump. Most people are fine running 85 octane.

They can't be serious!:

A senior administration official tells my colleague Jake Tapper this about the body: "We are ensuring it is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition. It's something we take seriously and therefore it's being handled in an appropriate manner.‬"

Under Islamic tradition, ABC's Zunaira Zaki reports, the body would be washed by Muslim men and buried as soon as possible, usually by the next prayer (Muslims pray five times a day), although there may be delays under certain circumstances (for autopsies, for example). The body is usually buried in a simple white sheet -- whether buried in the ground, or at sea.

Really? :019:

I can understand not wanting to create a shrine for the scumbag, but allowing him to be "washed by men" and wrapped in white?

Yeah CNN announced they buried Bin Laden at sea. They better have lots of evidence and diversified witnesses that they actually got him or a lot of people are not going to believe the story. DNA and fingerprints being the best evidence but then you have to trust the source of that data. In an age where trust has been shattered and nobody believes anyone anymore and so many lies are being told to further so many agendas, who knows.

It did come on in place of Trumps show. All the networks actually cut in to their programming. But yeah, Trump was one of them. A little extra salt in the wound after the dinner the other night.

But tonights announcement made perfect sense. First, Sunday night at the time of the announcement is when the most people are going to be at home to turn on the TV or have the Internet up. Second, it came right after the whole birth certificate shit and wiped that right out of the news cycle. Third, it was timed right before any Republicans are about to announce their intentions to run in 2012. Takes whatever little steam & momentum out of any of those folks. And fourth, it was timed perfectly so the world could all watch the royal wedding and have a day of full re-caps of the whole thing. In fact, right now watching the news about Bin Laden and on my DVR guide it says 'Royal Wedding'.

So yeah...this fucking thing could not have been timed better at all.

Who cares? They should have cut him up as chum, and fed him to the sharks piece by piece.

Ding, dong...the motherfucker is dead.

I hope this doesn't result in everyone letting their guard down. I think it's a foregone conclusion that Al Qaeda or some radical splinter faction is going to look for some payback.

Some Osama wanna-be asshole is going to try and make a name for himself.....

Was just curious what the procedure is. And yeah, but chumming him would be a lot more fun if he was alive. Start with fingers, toes, hands, feet, arms, legs, while he has to watch the sharks eat em up. Or just dangle him overboard while the sharks start on the feet & work their way up.

Supposedly, the quick burial would be within Muslim customs, but I'm not sure where "burial at sea" would fit in to that, especially given this detail.......

Burial

The deceased is then taken to the cemetery for burial (al-dafin). While all members of the community attend the funeral prayers, only the men of the community accompany the body to the gravesite. It is preferred for a Muslim to be buried where he or she died, and not be transported to another location or country (which may cause delays or require embalming the body). If available, a cemetery (or section of one) set aside for Muslims is preferred. The deceased is laid in the grave (without a coffin if permitted by local law) on his or her right side, facing Mecca. At the gravesite, it is discouraged for people to erect tombstones, elaborate markers, or put flowers or other momentos. Rather, one should humbly remember Allah and His mercy, and pray for the deceased.

Now how the fuck do you lay a body on his side facing Mecca if you throw him in the water??

I don't know what the fuck is going on here, but it doesn't sound like a proper Muslim burial by that description. Do I care if Bin Laden's religious beliefs are respected? Not particularly. But if that is the reason given for the quick burial, then the story should match up with Muslim customs. Because the Muslims WILL notice. And Obama repeated again just the other day that he is NOT fighting a war against Islam, so this would not be the time to piss on their religious traditions, regardless of the shitbag in question.

To answer your question: the body is but in a heavy canvas bag along with some sort of weight (a 5 inch shell was usually used in WWII, for example). The body is then heaved over the side in very deep water. Burial at sea is still somewhat common in the US Navy, usually done for retired or former military members (or family members and/or their ashes, in the case of JFK, Jr) but any American citizen may request it.

Aside from the obvious piling on taking place in the form of "USA! USA!" chants from so-called patriots claiming this as a victory, the truth is, it isn't. Where is his body and any incontestable proof of the corpse's true identity laying? At the bottom of the ocean. According to what press release you read (and choose to believe), U.S. forces, whom suddenly find themselves paying absolute and strict attention to Muslim tradition, buried the body as quickly as possible, in this case chucking it in the ocean. Supposedly, photos and DNA evidence were taken immediately giving proof that the identity of the corpse was that of Osama bin Laden, even though such evidence normally takes days (if not weeks) to process.

So the general public is expected to believe that the greatest manhunt in the recorded history of humanity was resolved and proven with less convincing documented information and in less time than an average episode of CSI: Miami?

Osama Bin Laden left hugely disappointed by quality of virgins

Recently deceased former Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden is said to be furious about the quality of virgins he has been given in the afterlife, also insisting that his new home is a little on the hot side.

Upon arrival at what he thought was Heaven, Bin Laden was shown to a small shed on the shores of a lake of fire which will be his home for eternity.

Osama told our medium, “Every time I complained that this isn’t what Heaven is meant to be like, the tour guide would laugh and say ‘yes, this is “heaven”‘ – always using those annoying air quote things.”

“I demanded my virgins, like any good martyr, but what they brought me is entirely unacceptable.”

“The line-up looks like the queue outside a Chicago Rock Cafe in Basingstoke – there is a very good reason these women are still virgins.”

“And some of them definitely look like they’ve been around the block a few times. One of them is passing around photos of her kids.”

One of Bin Laden’s new hosts told us, “Look, actual genuine virgins are almost impossible to come by these days, so if they’ve got less than ten partners they count, alright?”

A spokesperson for the virgin community said that it was not only Bin Laden who felt cheated by the arrangements.

One told us, “We’re not overly happy about it either, truth by told.”

“When we signed up for this gig we were told it was eternity with a great warrior, who was a hero to his people – not the world’s most wanted terrorist. My mum always said I should read the fine print.”

45 year-old virgin and computer game enthusiast Kevin Simms told us, “I wasn’t really paying attention when they offered the gig, I was too busy taking on Al Qaeda in Call of Duty on my Xbox. Oh the irony.”

“On the bright-side, he seems to be suffering a bit of ‘stage-fright’ downstairs, so this might not be so bad after all.”

Let me start then. Here we go...... Bush could have gotten Bin Ladden but he was advised not to because so many of his advisors and buddies were making money off of chasing him. If they got him they wouldn't be able to make as much money and control the US population using terror as the excuse.

Since Obama was a former CIA asset and had ties to the Bush network he allowed it to go on. Now that he has a second election to win, Obama gave the ok to kill Bin Laden because it would help shore up his reputation as president.

The big corporations love Obama as do the unions. Too many people are worried the Republicans will take their government benefits away. Obama is not popular with the people who run their own businesses but sadly there are less and less of these people. Obama is a big corporation, big government, and big union president and too many people in the US benefit from all three. Many of these people see Obama as a liar and a fake but they still see him as the lesser of the two evils. They will vote Obama over any Republican.

Unless there is a hotter than shit independent candidate to get enough votes from both sides, Obama will be hard to beat because the corporations will back him and a good percentage of the american public will back him out of fear of the republicans cutting the money off. So it looks like we are going to spend ourselves into the abyss while the corporations make record progress and we have less consumer choices out of fear of losing a government check.

Food and fuel prices will be through the roof and there will be less employment as ever. Of course a guy like Obama will think that's good to justify big social programs. They seem to be an easy sell in shitty times. unless someone is trusted more than Obama to sell a better solution, he's basically going to win from default. Whether this all is some grand global government conspiracy or just the result of stupid shit greed can be debated.

I never agreed with invading countries as a solution to get these terrorists. I was for securing the borders and proper profiling on suspects in the US. Then wait them out and hitting them with special forces and technology when they least suspected it.

I think that to a certain extent was the strategy that worked. I just think we have so many people behind the scenes in Washington that want to benefit from any situation you can't run small operations. All the contractors want to make money and corporations want to benefit from what happens. So the oil companies come in and this contractor and that contractor. It's becomes a big feast orgy when in fact, good intelligence and waiting for the proper time using elite forces seems to be what gets the results. You also have less collateral damage doing it this way.

Pervy Musharraf is certainly not happy about the raid..........

US strike violates Pak sovereignty: Musharraf
CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Former Pakistan president General (retired) Pervez Musharraf called the operation by US forces to kill al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad near Islamabad a violation of Pakistani sovereignty.

"America coming to our territory and taking action is a violation of our sovereignty. Handling and execution of the operation (by US forces) is not correct. The Pakistani government should have been kept in the loop," Musharraf told CNN-IBN in an exclusive interview.

"Foreign troops crossing the border into Pakistan will not be liked by the people of Pakistan. US forces should not have crossed over into Pakistan," he said.

Musharraf, who was the chief of Pakistani Army before he orchestrated a bloodless coup in 1999 and took over the government in Pakistan, said that Pakistan has also been incurring the wrath of terrorists and has been an ally in the 'war against terror'. He said that all the forces trying to neutralise terror group should trust each other.

"If there is a lack of trust, it is bad. We are fighting the same enemy. It is wrong strategically and the issue of lack of trust is very bad. There has to be trust between the two agencies fighting the same enemy," he replied when asked if US claims that Pakistan was not kept in the loop about the operation against bin Laden were true.

He rubbished speculations that some Pakistani authorities were helping bin Laden and they helped him during his stay in Abbottabad, which incidentally also has the Pakistan Military Academy.

"There is no possibility of any local administration collusion but there could be involvement of some locals. There is an intelligence failure on Pakistan's part. I don't know whether Osama was staying there or coming and going. However, a house so close to the military establishment is a failure of intelligence of both US and Pakistan. Pakistan intelligence doesn't have the resource that US intelligence has," he said.

While claiming that bin Laden's death was a victory for the peace-loving people of the world, he also cautioned that just the battle has been won but war against terror continues.

"It's a victory for the peace loving people in Pakistan and world. His killing is a big victory," he added.

Bin Laden was never a CIA asset. That's a bullshit ASSumption made due to support for the mujaheddin during the Soviet occupation. But there was no direct contact with Bin Laden's groups and he certainly never was controlled by American intelligence. Nor did Bin Laden's minions in anyway represent close to the whole of the resistance to the Soviet occupation from 1979 to 1989. There were various factions with various goals as evidenced by the far longer than predicted hold out of the communist Najibullah gov't and the follow on civil war between the opposing clans, nationalities, and ethnic groups...

I'm just making shit up. The thing is, how would pissants like us know whether he was or was not a CIA asset? What brews conspiracy theories is the lack of able to prove anything. This conspiracy paranormal UFO thing seems to be big big big business these days. If I could lie well enough to pull it off. I could not keep the poker face needed. I don't know how the lady in Washington does the Ramtha thing. I just am not a natural born con artist. That's a skill in itself.

Yep. If 20 Navy SEALS took him out yesterday, then 20 Navy SEALS could have taken him out in October 2001. But then Chimp & PNAC wouldn't have been able to lie their way into wars to protect their opium and oil profits.

How come it is that the CIA is always cropping off the top half of a photo in order to tamper with it? Even more pressing, how come their photo-shopping skills have not improved over the past half-century? :hee:

WASHINGTON — The U.S. used multiple means to confirm the identity of Osama bin Laden during and after the firefight in which he was killed, before placing his body in the North Arabian Sea from aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier, senior U.S. officials said Monday.

The al-Qaida leader was identified by name by a woman believed to be one of his wives – bin Laden had several – who was present at his Pakistan compound at the time of the U.S. raid. He also was visually identified by members of the U.S. raid squad, a senior intelligence official told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. Under ground rules set by the Pentagon, the intelligence official and two senior defense officials could not be identified by name.

The intelligence official also said quite a bit of unspecified material was collected by U.S. forces during the raid. Without describing the material, the official said it is being analyzed by a team of people at the CIA.

The officials said bin Laden was killed toward the end of the firefight, which took place overnight Monday in a building at a compound north of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. His body was put aboard the USS Carl Vinson and placed into the North Arabian Sea.

Traditional Islamic procedures for handling the remains were followed, the officials said, including washing the corpse, placing it in a white sheet. Preparations for at-sea burial began at 1:10 a.m. EDT Monday and were completed at 2 a.m. EDT, one official said.

The intelligence official said the DNA match, using DNA from several family members, provided virtual certainty that it was bin Laden's body.

Officials did not immediately say where or how the testing was done but the test explains why President Barack Obama was confident to announce the death to the world Sunday night. Obama provided no details on the identification process.

Dr. Bruce Budowle, a former senior scientist at the FBI, said DNA confirmation can be achieved quickly under the right circumstances.

Budowle, currently director of the Institute of Investigative Genetics at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, said using a sample of blood or a cheek swab, "you extract the DNA that day, get the PCR done in the same day, put it on the machine that night... and interpret it the following day." PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, technology allows scientists to rapidly copy a single stretch of DNA using cycles of heating and cooling. Then it's a matter of adding fluorescent dyes to compare specific spots on that chunk of DNA with the relative's sample.

If markers on standard, well-known regions match, they have a positive identification.

The U.S. is believed to have collected DNA samples from bin Laden family members in the years since the 9/11 attacks that triggered the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. It was unclear whether the U.S. also had fingerprints or some other means to identify the body on site.

Bin Laden was shot in the head during the firefight with members of an elite American counter-terrorism unit that launched a helicopter-borne raid on the al-Qaida leader's compound, U.S. officials said. Officials said the U.S. special forces who stormed the compound came face to face with their prey.

U.S. officials also said bin Laden was identified through "facial recognition," a reference to technology for mapping unique facial characteristics, but it was not clear exactly how the Navy SEAL troops performed the comparison.

The body was photographed before being buried at sea, although no images have been released by the Obama administration.

The U.S. official who disclosed the burial at sea said it was not possible to find a country willing to accept the remains. Pressed by reporters to say which countries had been contacted about taking the remains, the official said, "I'm not going into details of those conversations."

Obama said the remains had been handled in accordance with Islamic custom, which requires speedy burial.

An official at Monday's Pentagon briefing said the body, once aboard the USS Carl Vinson, was washed and placed in a white sheet. It was then placed in a "weighted bag," and a military officer read prepared "religious remarks," which were translated into Arabic by a "native speaker" who was not further identified.

The body was then placed on a "prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased's body eased into the sea," the official said.

Details on how the body was transported to the ship were not provided.

Positive identification of the remains is considered a critically important part of the U.S. operation, given the symbolic importance of bin Laden's leadership of the Islamic extremist movement that was based in Afghanistan until the U.S. invaded in October 2001.

When al-Qaida's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in June 2006, DNA tests were performed by the FBI to positively identify the remains. The U.S. military also performed an autopsy, in part to dispel allegations in the immediate aftermath of the airstrike that the terrorist leader had been beaten or shot by U.S. soldiers while in American custody.

It was not clear Monday whether the Obama administration intended to release its photos of bin Laden's body.

In July 2003, when U.S. forces killed Saddam Hussein's sons, Odai and Qusai, in a gunbattle in northern Iraq, the U.S. military released graphic after-death photographs in an effort to prove to Iraqis that they were dead. Two of the photos showed the first man, identified as Qusai, with bruises and blood spots around his eyes. That face was far more intact than the other, identified as Odai; the mouth was open with the teeth showing.

I mean, right! I hate to say "trust the government" to anyone. But if the gov'ts were to "fake" Bin Laden's death for some underlying political gain, why the fuck didn't they do it years ago? Like on 9/21/2001? Or when the Iraq War turned into a partisan/al Qaida of Iraq shitfest in 2003-2004? Or when the GOP was shitting itself in late 2006 to 2008?

Why now?

A Fox News affiliate declared that President Barack Obama was dead and then flashed along their news scroll that "Obama Bin Laden" had died.

While reporting the breaking news Sunday that Bin Laden had been killed in a mansion outside Islamabad, the Fox affiliate said, "President Obama is in fact dead. I'm sorry, Osama Bin Laden."

The affiliate then flashed along its news scroll that "Obama Bin Laden" had been killed instead of Osama, and reported that the killing happened a week ago.

Fox News is often under fire for reporting along party lines.

In February, the network switched Gallup Poll numbers to make it appear that a majority of Americans were for collective bargaining rights of government workers, a Republican cause, which was false. In fact, 61 percent of Americans were against it.

Funny Facebook comment I just saw...

Adrian Karamanis: So many of our Presidents in history have had nicknames associated with their time in office and other accomplishments. For instance, George Washington was known as "The Father of His Country" among others. Andrew Jackson was known as the "Hero of New Orleans" for his leadership against a British invasion force. Ronald Reagan was known as "The Great Communicator", and George W. Bush as "Dubya". On May 1st of 2011, our 44th President, Barrak Hussein Obama, loving became known as "The Nigga on the Trigga."

The detail to the operation were just pushes.

Bin Laden long left the fundie state.

I so value the Pious that is common knowledge. I myself may never live up to or even come close to a Pious. However, they are an endearment of mine.

Bin Laden left the pois camp, I think many years ago.

The reason the drug scale is relevant to me is due to many mentor that I enjoy their knowledge.

Pious does not partake of drugs. Pois does not use illegal activities to earn income.

I myself never consider Bin laden to be of the pious due to his lustful drive of power.

I consider Bin Laden to be a cult leader, in par of Jim Jones, Charles Manson (to name Christian). There are also quite a number of cults in Islam. Ben Laden was and will be a leader of one. One that is a deadly cult. He is not unique deadly cult leaders come.

The death of any human soul is a time of reflection. Joyousness should mottled, even for the vile. There has been a soul lost today, one that was mislead by sin when wishing for pious gratitude.

Back to why the scales are important. They are important for the same reason Libya is in a struggle, corruption.

The corruption to be fought is long standing weeds. Ben Laden claimed pious while sowing intoxicants. It was no different than Gadafi's social engineering governmental funds to his of claim pious.

It is common knowledge that I am not opposed to vice. I have never met any one that wants to be cheated of a blow job, or shorted on a kilo.

Neither do the pious wish for a man that uses corruption lead the way.

Does this mean that Bin Laden death will end the cult? No. It does not. For a drug cult is a hard thing to over come.

As Bin Laden died at sea, the loss to many will be as quick to heart as the f'loons of Jackson.

And as many know that sin will not be laid to rest.

As the pursuit to clear the board of the likes of Enron, and so many other sins, the loss of the cult leaders will haunt poor souls.

This is why reflection, not celebration is in order.

It is not necessarily the loss of that one human soul, but the many f'loons that so followed that soul and now have turmoil.

May God have mercy on Bin Laden followers and grant them the right and just way.

May God have mercy on us all.

Peace for all,
Blaze; Oolith; Julia

Thank you man. Great post and I couldn't agree more. When I said I liked seeing the people gathering chanting USA USA, it wasn't a diss on anyone elses country. Just made me feel good to be an American. When I see other countries celebrate big things I am happy for them too. On a smaller scale, even though I pull for one NFL team, when another wins the SuperBowl and I see all their home city erupt in happiness and celebration, I am happy for them. I'd do the same if one of my home teams ever won anything.

I think it's good & healthy to be proud of where you are from and celebrate it. Whether it's a nation, a state, a city, or a small town. I think the people ragging on that right now in this thread are the types that think every kid should get a trophy. They want us to be citizens of Earth and have some huge group hug. No one is better than any other. I hope they don't watch the Olympics. That's about as blatant as it gets competing one country against another in one aspect to see who is better at that given point in time.

USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

Leave it to the dimmest bulb in the box like jhale to turn something good into something overly political.

I do give Obama credit: for not stopping what he said he would, our operations in Afghanistan until that terrorist asshole was dead.

Obama, to his credit, is not taking direct credit for the operation but giving it to where it is due: our brave men and women (which includes all the support personnel besides the Seal Team to pull this mission off) who put their lives on the line once again. Also to our intel people who were the ones who put the noose around bin Laden's neck.

If he was tried in a court, he might well have been convicted. Or he might have given up some info that would have convicted some of his old family friends and business partners. I guess we'll never know, but I hope the next Navy SEAL raid is at Kennebunkport on Thanksgiving.

And every "war" since 1945 has had two things in common:

1) None of them had a goddamn thing to do with actual defense of the United States.

2) None of them were legal, under the Constitution.

As far as Congress funding this illegal shit, now that they no longer have the excuse of "the terraist who blew up the World Trade Center" to justify it, it's going to be a lot harder justifying this bullshit. Especially when attempting to rationalize cuts to social security, medicare, and other things that actually help Americans.

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-was-he-betrayed-of-course-pakistan-knew-bin-ladens-hiding-place-all-along-2278028.html

Robert Fisk: Was he betrayed? Of course. Pakistan knew Bin Laden's hiding place all along

A middle-aged nonentity, a political failure outstripped by history – by the millions of Arabs demanding freedom and democracy in the Middle East – died in Pakistan yesterday. And then the world went mad.

Fresh from providing us with a copy of his birth certificate, the American President turned up in the middle of the night to provide us with a live-time death certificate for Osama bin Laden, killed in a town named after a major in the army of the old British Empire. A single shot to the head, we were told. But the body's secret flight to Afghanistan, an equally secret burial at sea? The weird and creepy disposal of the body – no shrines, please – was almost as creepy as the man and his vicious organisation.

The Americans were drunk with joy. David Cameron thought it "a massive step forward". India described it as a "victorious milestone". "A resounding triumph," Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu boasted. But after 3,000 American dead on 9/11, countless more in the Middle East, up to half a million Muslims dead in Iraq and Afghanistan and 10 years trying to find Bin Laden, pray let us have no more "resounding triumphs". Revenge attacks? Perhaps they will come, by the little groupuscules in the West, who have no direct contact with al-Qa'ida. Be sure, someone is already dreaming up a "Brigade of the Martyr Osama bin Laden". Maybe in Afghanistan, among the Taliban.

But the mass revolutions in the Arab world over the past four months mean that al-Qa'ida was already politically dead. Bin Laden told the world – indeed, he told me personally – that he wanted to destroy the pro-Western regimes in the Arab world, the dictatorships of the Mubaraks and the Ben Alis. He wanted to create a new Islamic Caliphate. But these past few months, millions of Arab Muslims rose up and were prepared for their own martyrdom – not for Islam but for freedom and liberty and democracy. Bin Laden didn't get rid of the tyrants. The people did. And they didn't want a caliph.

I met the man three times and have only one question left unasked: what did he think as he watched those revolutions unfold this year – under the flags of nations rather than Islam, Christians and Muslims together, the kind of people his own al-Qa'ida men were happy to butcher?

In his own eyes, his achievement was the creation of al-Qa'ida, the institution which had no card-carrying membership. You just woke up in the morning, wanted to be in al-Qa'ida – and you were. He was the founder. But he was never a hands-on warrior. There was no computer in his cave, no phone calls to set bombs off. While the Arab dictators ruled uncontested with our support, they largely avoided condemning American policy; only Bin Laden said these things. Arabs never wanted to fly planes into tall buildings, but they did admire a man who said what they wanted to say. But now, increasingly, they can say these things. They don't need Bin Laden. He had become a nonentity.

But talking of caves, Bin Laden's demise does bring Pakistan into grim focus. For months, President Ali Zardari has been telling us that Bin Laden was living in a cave in Afghanistan. Now it turns out he was living in a mansion in Pakistan. Betrayed? Of course he was. By the Pakistan military or the Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence? Quite possibly both. Pakistan knew where he was.

Not only was Abbottabad the home of the country's military college – the town was founded by Major James Abbott of the British Army in 1853 – but it is headquarters of Pakistan's Northern Army Corps' 2nd Division. Scarcely a year ago, I sought an interview with another "most wanted man" – the leader of the group believed responsible for the Mumbai massacres. I found him in the Pakistani city of Lahore – guarded by uniformed Pakistani policemen holding machine guns.

Of course, there is one more obvious question unanswered: couldn't they have captured Bin Laden? Didn't the CIA or the Navy Seals or the US Special Forces or whatever American outfit killed him have the means to throw a net over the tiger? "Justice," Barack Obama called his death. In the old days, of course, "justice" meant due process, a court, a hearing, a defence, a trial. Like the sons of Saddam, Bin Laden was gunned down. Sure, he never wanted to be taken alive – and there were buckets of blood in the room in which he died.

But a court would have worried more people than Bin Laden. After all, he might have talked about his contacts with the CIA during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, or about his cosy meetings in Islamabad with Prince Turki, Saudi Arabia's head of intelligence. Just as Saddam – who was tried for the murder of a mere 153 people rather than thousands of gassed Kurds – was hanged before he had the chance to tell us about the gas components that came from America, his friendship with Donald Rumsfeld, the US military assistance he received when he invaded Iran in 1980.

Oddly, he was not the "most wanted man" for the international crimes against humanity of 11 September 2001. He gained his Wild West status by al-Qa'ida's earlier attacks on the US embassies in Africa and the attack on the US barracks in Dhahran. He was always waiting for Cruise missiles – so was I when I met him. He had waited for death before, in the caves of Tora Bora in 2001 when his bodyguards refused to let him stand and fight and forced him to walk over the mountains to Pakistan. Some of his time he would spend in Karachi – he was obsessed with Karachi; he even, weirdly, gave me photographs of pro-Bin Laden graffiti on the walls of the former Pakistani capital and praised the city's imams.

His relations with other Muslims were mysterious; when I met him in Afghanistan, he initially feared the Taliban, refusing to let me travel to Jalalabad at night from his training camp – he handed me over to his al-Qa'ida lieutenants to protect me on the journey next day. His followers hated all Shia Muslims as heretics and all dictators as infidels – though he was prepared to cooperate with Iraq's ex-Baathists against the country's American occupiers, and said so in an audiotape which the CIA typically ignored. He never praised Hamas and was scarcely worthy of their "holy warrior" definition yesterday which played – as usual – straight into Israel's hands.

In the years after 2001, I maintained a faint indirect communication with Bin Laden, once meeting one of his trusted al-Qa'ida associates at a secret location in Pakistan. I wrote out a list of 12 questions, the first of which was obvious: what kind of victory could he claim when his actions resulted in the US occupation of two Muslim countries? There was no reply for weeks. Then one weekend, waiting to give a lecture in Saint Louis in the US, I was told that Al Jazeera had produced a new audiotape from Bin Laden. And one by one – without mentioning me – he answered my 12 questions. And yes, he wanted the Americans to come to the Muslim world – so he could destroy them.

When Wall Street journalist Daniel Pearl was kidnapped, I wrote a long article in The Independent, pleading with Bin Laden to try to save his life. Pearl and his wife had looked after me when I was beaten on the Afghan border in 2001; he even gave me the contents of his contacts book. Much later, I was told that Bin Laden had read my report with sadness. But Pearl had already been murdered. Or so he said.

Yet Bin Laden's own obsessions blighted even his family. One wife left him, two more appeared to have been killed in Sunday's American attack. I met one of his sons, Omar, in Afghanistan with his father in 1994. He was a handsome little boy and I asked him if he was happy. He said "yes" in English. But last year, he published a book called Living Bin Laden and – recalling how his father killed his beloved dogs in a chemical warfare experiment – described him as an "evil man". In his book, he too remembered our meeting; and concluded that he should have told me that no, he was not a happy child.

By midday yesterday, I had three phone calls from Arabs, all certain that it was Bin Laden's double who was killed by the Americans – just as I know many Iraqis who still believe that Saddam's sons were not killed in 2003, nor Saddam really hanged. In due course, al-Qa'ida will tell us. Of course, if we are all wrong and it was a double, we're going to be treated to yet another videotape from the real Bin Laden – and President Barack Obama will lose the next election.

Newsmax/InsiderAdvantage Poll: Obama Approval Climbs, Bush Gets Credit, Too

Tuesday, 03 May 2011 02:41 PM

By Dan Weil
A new poll from Newsmax/InsiderAdvantage shows that President Barack Obama’s approval rating received a mild boost from the killing of Osama bin Laden. It also shows that Americans across the political spectrum believe President George W. Bush also deserves credit for the al-Qaida leader’s capture.

And most Americans are far from convinced the war on terrorism is nearing an end: Some 67.6 percent of respondents are concerned about retaliation. They cut across party affiliation, age, gender, and ethnicity.

Both parties have been generous in sharing the credit on bin Laden, says Matt Towery, CEO of InsiderAdvantage. Republican leaders congratulated Obama after the news emerged. And the Newsmax/InsiderAdvantage survey — one of the first conducted since the news broke — shows a plurality of Democrats give Bush credit too.

“Obama was smart to say he didn’t do it alone, and the same for Republicans. You would have to be blind not to give Obama some credit,” Towery said.

As for Obama’s approval rating, the poll shows it at 47.7 percent, equal to his disapproval rating. That’s an improvement from the days before the attack, when Obama’s disapproval rating exceeded his approval rating by 2 to 6 percentage points, Towery says.

Towery added that the poll shows that over 20 percent of Democrats who responded, still either disapproved or somewhat disapproved of Obama’s job performance.

“This presents a real challenge to Obama’s re-election bid,” said Towery. “This is the liberal and anti-hawk segments of his party, who feel that Obama has betrayed them in his policies and his military attack on bin Laden. When 20% of your own party holds this opinion, it presents an erosion of your base support—the very support that got you elected in the first place.”

His approval rating will probably rise further — into the low 50s — over the next few weeks, Towery says. “It will take some time to digest,” he explains. “As people hear how he put it together, I expect him to improve further.”

But the gain won’t be strong, because Obama is “a more polarizing president than most we’ve had,” Towery says. Indeed, there’s a large number of Democrats who disapprove of Obama — 14.8 percent in the Newsmax/InsiderAdvantage poll. “Those are probably liberals upset at Obama for engaging with the military and not putting in place the policies they wanted.”

It’s mostly moderates whom Obama is pulling in to boost his rating. “The secret to Obama winning was independent voters who went for Bush and then jumped over for him,” Towery notes. “I think that as the race gets closer, polls will get more polarized, and independent voters will decide whether he gets elected again.”

Obama would probably look better in a poll asking about re-election at this point, because Republican candidates are unknown, he says.

As for Bush, 65 percent of respondents say he contributed to bin Laden’s death, including 61.3 percent of independents and 47.7 percent of Democrats (45.8 percent of Democrats say he didn’t contribute). So clearly most Americans remember that the hunt for bin Laden began in the Bush administration.

I know what you mean Sesh, but I'd say 7/7 was pretty horrific. That's 'lots' of people to me.
