Fake security software catches out Apple owners

A fake security program for Apple computers called MACDefender has racked up a significant number of victims.

Hundreds of people who installed the software have turned to Apple's forums for help to remove it.

The program's tactic of peppering screens with pornographic pictures has made many keen to get rid of it.

MACDefender seems to have been successful because of the work its creators did to make it appear high up in search results.

The number of people seeking help was uncovered by ZDNet journalist Ed Bott. In a blog post, he wrote about finding more than 200 separate discussions on Apple's official forums about MACDefender.

The volume of reports about the problem was "exceptional" in his experience, he said.

The fake Mac anti-virus software, which goes by the name of both MACDefender and Mac Security, began circulating in early May and has steadily racked up victims.

Such programs, often called scareware, urge people to install software that then pretends to scan a machine for security problems. It then fabricates a list of threats it has found and asks for cash before it will fix these non-existent problems.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said the scareware's creators had turned to search engines to get the program in front of potential victims by linking it with innocuous phrases such as "Mother's Day".

"You search for something on Google Images, and when you click on an image you are taken to a webpage which serves up the attack - regardless of whether you are running Mac OS X or Windows," he said.

One trick the software uses to make people cough up cash quicker was to fire up the browser of unattended machines and call up one of several different pornographic websites.

Mr Cluley said the vast majority of malware that Sophos and other security firms see is aimed at Windows users. About 100,000 novel malicious programs for Windows are detected every day, he said.

"Although there is much less malware in existence for Mac OS X than there is for Windows, that's no reason to put your head in the sand and think that there are no Mac threats out there," he said.

One reason OSX is more secure is it won't download anything without the proper user password. If the user is dumb enough to download unknown software from a unknown source then their stupidity get's the best of them.

Exactly... Windows is still light years ahead of Mac when it comes to getting a virus... this particular example for Mac has to be user installed, and, well - that's just retarded. I was reading about this on some tech site, and it's funny how windows users are frothing at the mouth with excitement about this. It's like 1 for Mac, 1,000,000,000+ for windows...

Aside from taking place at work, what's the downside to this?

Well, what if it's not good porn?

The sick fucks who write malware problems probably wouldn't be above throwing in some goatfucking or pedo shit.

The ONLY reason Mac was secure was because of the low number of users.

Since because of all these new gadgets, Apple is gaining a significant portion of the market, guess what?

Yep. You're gonna get your viruses & malware just like all the Windows retards.

And just for your information, most Windows malware is also user installed. Mainly from downloading those "cool" messenger emoticons packages & the like.

Because if you don't message in pink glitter with fluffy kittens, you're not getting laid.

Not looking to get into a Mac vs PC pissing match, but the number of users wasn't the ONLY reason. Not by a long shot. I'd start somewhere along the lines of Windows swiss-cheese-like OS and work up from there.

Of course I understand that hacker shitbags want to cause the most damage with the least amount of work - so they target windows....

Actually, OSX is built on Darwin BSD, a Unix derivative similar to Linux, and so it is a far more secure system at its core than Windows. Though it is true that the assholes who write virii, malware, and that sort of shit do aim for the largest market share, which has been Windows, and Mac is increasing their percentage of the share.

And of course, with this particular malware, the security of the OS is irrelevant since it IS user installed.

What I'd really like to see is some do-gooder hacker group like "Anonymous" take these assclowns down. I've always suspected that a lot of these evil programs are written by the anti-virus software industry because it keeps them employed. Hey, it works for the military industrial complex, right?

I'm not saying that Macs aren't more secure. In fact, it doesn't even matter in the least. Get this into your thick skulls: they'll hack it.

You can boast about your security & live in your impregnable dream island, but if someone wants in, he will.

So yeah. If Mac gets the majority of the market, THAT will become the target... and the number of malware/viruses in Windows will decrease dramatically.

Cheers! :bottle:

Yeah, no shit... I don't think anyone claimed to be living on secure impregnable dream island.

I agree with FORD, I believe the security companies have a hand in keeping themselves in business.
