    'Columbo' Star Peter Falk Dies

Peter Falk -- star of the TV show "Columbo" -- died last night ... TMZ has learned

Falk -- who suffered from Alzheimer's disease -- was 83.

A rep for the family tells TMZ, "Peter Falk, 83-year-old Academy Award nominee and star of television series, 'Columbo', died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011."

The rep continued, "Peter Falk is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage."

In addition to "Columbo," Falk starred in "Princess Bride," "Brigadoon" and "The Great Race."

Peter's wife, Shera and daughter Catherine were locked in a legal battle in 2009 over the creation of a conservatorship for Peter and who would control it. In the end, the judge appointed Shera conservator.

Bummer. Always liked him. I watched Columbo as a little kid. I had no idea what was happening with the stories, but I liked seeing the funny guy with the weird eyes.

        RIP Columbo

He was a kind of funny guy. He was for several years on the Dutch TV, end 70's begin 80's and the 'fun' part was he always came back after he did a lot of questions to do ( his final) another question, every episode he did it!!
No way he's coming back this time but thanks anyway for all those episodes I've been watching him on TV!!!!

          R.I.P. "Columbo"

In addition to Columbo, he was also great as the charming grandpa in The Princess Bride, and downright scary as the Castro-like dictator in a memorable episode of the Twilight Zone.

                          This is sad news.

You've got to love Columbo - no-one ever sees him coming.

I always liked him as Columbo, and also as the (cheek-pinching) grandfather in The Princess Bride, both of which I used to watch to death when I was little too.
