On my way home tonight, I was bored and started looking up Amazon, Best Buy, J&R Music, etc., but the only site that seems to list the upcoming album is Walmart.

Is it too early for the album to show up elsewhere, or am I screwed (because thanks to our City Council, THERE IS NO WALMART IN ALL OF NEW YORK CITY)?

There's a K-mart in Manhattan - weird that there's no walmart.

Yes, that one K-Mart is in the East Village, of all places. The City Council makes it SO difficult for companies to come here. I'd go into a big rant about them, but this isn't the place for it.

Hell, if it were a Walmart exclusive, they would have been trumpeting it to the skies already.

Remember AC/DC? Garth Brooks? As soon as the ink was dry on whatever contracts they signed, Walmart was making all kinds of big announcements.

I am sure they would have LOVED to have an exclusive deal, but I don't see it happening, as Walmart has kept their yap shut.

Well this one was within walking distance of Madison Square Garden, where we were for the Westminster dog show. It was a DIVE.

Yeah, I saw that the other day. Looks like one of those gray market imports. Probably legal in Brazil where the broadcast originated from, but they'll probably have someone try to kill distribution in the US. Whether it's WB or Van Halen themselves, or both. (Or Interscope, if they happened to buy the back catalog, like they did with the Stones, Elton John, and others that they signed.)

There's not even a listing for the album (alone) on Amazon. As I said, the only place online I've been able to find it is Walmart, which made me wonder if it's a Walmart-only deal, or if Walmart is just the first to list it.

That thing is a steaming pile of dung. Horrible quality and if it's the same one that was released about a year ago (and I believe it is only a new title) the picture had a "frame" around it, so the video picture is actually about 2/3 the size of the screen with this annoying red border and a VH logo on it.

The largest issue facing Van Halen fans wishing to purchase the album upon it's release at Walmart is the idea that the entire deal is predicated upon the notion that this guy will be able to find the Fed-Ex package containing it, let alone remember where his fucking box-cutter is on that fateful day.

Is Target doing that shit now too?

I never even considered WalFart for music after they censored the cover of Nirvana's album way back in the 1990's, and made them change the song "Rape Me" to something really stupid like "Wake Me" or whatever.

Ironically the song was more about corporations fucking around with music than it was the actual sexual violation of women.

Crap, I'm completely confused by the choices Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/19717769) is offering. You have three options:

1. $11.88 - CD alone
2. $13.88 - CD/DVD
3. $19.88 - CD/T Shirt

Does this mean that option #3. gives you the CD alone, plus a shirt? Or does this mean you get the CD, the shirt AND the DVD? :019:

Can they edit the disc and not put a sticker on it legally?

What is that? The Tipper's revenge Act?

They don't put a sticker on it. They just remove the PARENTAL ADVISEMENT from the cover art. It's pretty stupid. These are "family friendly" stores. Which is funny considering the clientel they attract.

I have a Target 5 minutes away. If that fails, Best Buy is up the road a little ways.

Does anyone find it interesting that the vinyl version is 2 LPs? For 13 tunes.

Not really - I find it good, though, that it could possibly be two albums of 35mins or so each. That would be like two old CVH albums.

It could just be to allow for more spaces between the grooves, so to speak. It's common with contemporary vinyl releases to be doubles, especially when CDs can be 70 min+. All the CVH albums were made before CD (or in the case of 1984, wasn't released initially on CD, so recorded / mastered with the limitations of vinyl in mind - anything over 35 mins, and the grooves have to be cut closer, and something gets lost sonically).

Could depend on length of the tunes on the album, though - 'Tattoo' is the single, and sometimes you'd say the single is usually one of the shorter tracks on any album by any band for radio-play purposes - but it's nearly 5 mins long. Those first six albums were all around 33-36 mins (Van Halen I the longest ... at a mere 35:13 mins, but again, that was common in pre-CD days).

The only longer songs than 'Tattoo' they recorded in the 6-pack are: 'Cradle Will Rock', 'Fools', and 'Mean Street'. Maybe it will be an album of longer cuts. MWM and CGTSNM are both longer, too - so maybe the trend is towards slightly longer tunes now.

Great post Scraps. I was thinking the same way about this being like 2 of the six-pack with regard to length.
I also understand the fidelity issue, I'm not sure how the fidelity is saved if there's any digital anything in the processing especially with distorted guitar since the warmth of the tone is killed digitally.
There used to be verbal jousts on this site about mp3 versus flac, so I'm sure many people here know the difference.
I haven't bought vinyl in years, but I'm guessing the resurgence in its popularity's got something to do with fidelity.

I've certainly bought the occasional vinyl album in recent years - the packaging is just so much better, and the size of the thing as you hold it in your hands, just reminds me of all those countless hours spent looking at album sleeves, record labels, the etchings in the run-off grooves (!!) for clues to why this thing I was listening to - whatever it was - was like a magic charm.

But my turntable and hi-fi set-up is probably not the best, and the belt has just gone on the deck. I got it very cheap, though, from an online store in the UK that reconditions old hi-fi equipment (probably a guy in his basement), but it had clearly been sitting in somebody's garage for a while!! Signs of rust. But, the sound still damn well leaps out at you on the vinyl.

I don't know the how or why of it - you'd probably need to be a physicist or something to explain to me why it sounds better. But it just does.

The retail companies don't edit anything... the record label and bands have to agree to put out alternate versions of the original material before it even hits a shelf.

As creative as anyone wants to be... the FCC laws are what drives record companies and artists to produce "radio friendly" versions of their material. Most large corporations do have values that keeps them out of hot water with customers... But neither Walmart or Target force this stuff... the marketing people at the labels do. They want to sell to everyone... so they package things the retailers find palatable.

If Walmart was as bad as some of you make it to be... why is it I can walk in there and buy any season of Deadwood in all it's over-cussed, murdering with ho's and blow jobs that would make any cocksucker blush..?

Not really, bro.....

CD's capture a snapshot, for lack of a better word, of the music at a rate of 44,100 snapshots a minute......it's done to a precision rate of 16 bits. So you only have so much space to capture the sound....it's not infinite. What can't be fit into those spaces is cut, clipped, compressed, or ignored altogether.

Analog sound is the way we hear things, so it's a natural sound for humans......records have a groove cut into them that mimics the actual waveform that we hear.

The difference would be storing your personal belongs in a weather tight climate controlled building as opposed to a shed that has a leaky roof and holes in the walls.......it'll get the job done but you'll lose some of your belongings in the process.

Well, I guess I'll be purchasing this thing in at least 3 formats: The t-shirt package, the CD/DVD and naturally, the vinyl edition. What the hell, I haven't bought an album of new material in a few of years, since all I tend to get these days are archived boxed sets and reissues of albums I bought 10, 20 or 30 years ago anyway.

In theory we should not be able to distinguish any distortions/etc in a recording done at 44kHz/16bits.

First let me delve into your statement regarding samplerate/precision

44,100 snapshots per SECOND.

Times 16 bits. What exactly is the "Bit depth" anyhow? You know this but many do not. It's basically the number values each sample can have. 1 sample is 1/44100th of a second; infinitesimal. That sample could have 65,536 possible values in total, but inreality it's gotta account for phase, so 32,767 either way.

Sounds like a lot, it is a lot... then there's 24-bit precision. It's safe to say that whatever the exact level/value for any particular sample will be recorded EXACTLY.

With that having been said, let's just go ahead and say that the recording should be fucking PERFECT. 44,100hz samplerate translates to an effective frequency range of 0-22,050 hz and for the sake of argument let's just say that encompasses the entire audible range of the human ear and then some.

NOW digest this motherfuckers!

http://www.roger-russell.com/truth/truth.htm#cd

In a nutshell, most cd players have shit for dac's and shit for filtering and the resulting audio image is shit. Anyone smart enough to possess a high-quality cd player with high resolution filtering SHOULD get much better imaging from the same source material..

But since we don't always own $8,000 digital-analog converters/filters, it's easier to buy turntables and enjoy analogue audio with all the nuances.

Thats anothing thing.. how many of us own peice of shit amplifiers/home theater systems? Most of these can barely handle the transients let alone sustained power required to listen to van halen at it's proper ear-bleeding level...

Getting rambly now, better stop. Check out the article and the rest of his site; extremely cool stuff and interesting stories from an engineer of a legendary audio and speaker manufacturer.

Bought the exclusive Kiwi version of Tattoo a day before the official release. Pre-ordered the Walmart CD + Shirt deal. Will most likely pick up the Deluxe edition CD + DVD locally when it's available...

My biggest dilemma is tour tickets... tough call... New set of golf clubs or a two hour show of Van Halen w/ Diamond Dave. Both offer an element of mixed fun and frustration. This is exactly why I'm going to Best Buy to pick up my copy instead of Walmart. As far as their movies and video games go, there's all the sex, violence, and profanity you could possibly want. However, for whatever reason, Walmart has a long infamous history of practicing censorship when it comes to their CD's. Not even Target, their main competitor, does that. They sell them 'as is' (pun intended).
Walmart has a nifty little deal that comes with a T-shirt, but it would piss me off to bring it home and discover I have a nice shirt, but a 'kiddie' version of ADKOT. Something tells me there's a shirt waiting to be bought that kicks that shirts ass anyways.....at the show.:thumb:

It may cost 2 or 3 more clams to purchase it at Best Buy, but why roll the fuckin' dice?
Or as Walmart would put it, roll the f****n' dice?

I'll more than likely split the difference, getting the shirt version (without the DVD) at Walmart, then popping over to Target or Best Buy for the CD/DVD edition. I've already promised the one from Walmart to a coworker anyway.

To the best of my knowledge, there ISN'T one. You have to purchase the CD/DVD and t shirt/CD only separately: WALMART SITE (http://http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=van+halen&ic=16_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=4104)

And the ad contained in this weekend's paper makes no mention of a CD/DVD/Shirt all in one package.

As a vinyl lover, I thank you for the interesting info.

I've ordered my double LP red vinyl set already...

Alright, as most of us know... ADKOT is being released on vinyl. I have the entire six pack and most of the singles on vinyl. Thanks, eBay!

Where can I buy a high quality turntable? It looks like records are making a comeback and I need to adjust my home entertainment system accordingly.

Any recommendations?

Good topic ! I would like to hear various reviews myself.
I think if you are going all out analog again, gotta get a tube amp too :)

Grate idea. I'm tempted to ditch my iPod... sounds too phony.

Even lossless format lacks the warmth and tone of a good old fashioned LP.

Here's a site with a shit load of turntable reviews on it. The site is aimed at DJ's, so presumably there would be some quality turntables mentioned here.

You can find good turntables at most big electronics outfits like Best Buy, etc...

If you go with the older analog turntables... make sure your receiver has a true analog phono input. Today though most of the newer models offer both analog & USB outputs. I've never used one with USB output so I have no idea if there's any signal effect in the digital conversion...

I have an old late 70's Pioneer model and a mid-80's Technica... both are old school belt driven. With those the quality of the stylus was key.

I was just researching this today, here's the best link I found:
http://www.switched.com/2010/10/25/the-best-turntables-under-400-vinyl/

Whether you take one of their recommendations or not, I found this section extremely helpful. If you have a stereo store in your area, it's probably worth stopping in too:

"If you've spent more than a couple seconds cruising online for an opinion on a solid turntable, you are undoubtedly overwhelmed by the incredible array of options -- despite the supposed demise of vinyl three decades ago! (The correct term, by the way, if you want to fit in, is "turntable" and not "record player." Those are for kids.) The fact that vinyl didn't go extinct is a good thing, of course, as we ourselves love records and turntables. The complexity in buying then comes from the fact that turntables, despite being seemingly simple mechanical devices, are comprised of a handful of discrete mechanisms and components that are incredibly varied as you go from brand to brand and price range to price range. So, when you're in the market for a turntable, the sophisticated buyer will want to consider the elements that make up the whole. To name a few, there are the following: the drive system (belted or direct drive); the tonearm (straight or curved, hollow or solid); the cartridge type (ceramic, moving magnet, or moving coil); the platter (wood, metal, glass); and the plinth (i.e., the base of the player, made of metal, plastic, wood fiber or glass). And then there are the assorted electronics that go into it. Still with us?

We couldn't possibly say that any one combination of the above options is "best," but there are a few guidelines we can offer. The heavier a turntable base and platter are, the more stable and less likely they are to be affected by vibrations from a turntable's own mechanisms (or from you, as you clodhop around the house). DJs and amateur turntablists who want to get their wicki-wicki on will want a direct-drive motor, a high-powered motor connected directly to the platter. The rest of us, though, will prefer a belt-driven assembly, which helps to keep the motor from vibrating the platter (and record). Moving magnet and moving coil cartridges are always better than ceramic ones, and usually are replaceable and upgradable (but can also be extremely expensive). There are enough proponents of both straight and curved tonearms, meanwhile, that we won't argue one is better than the other. Ideally, though, you'll find one that you can balance by adjusting its counterweight. Finally, if you have a stereo receiver with a dedicated phono input, you won't need a turntable with a built-in preamp. If you don't, though, you'll want one that does. Otherwise, you'll have to shell out for a separate preamp, and add to your stack of home audio equipment."

It's awesome and simple. Vinyl is much better than CD's and mp3's. (Not trying to sound like LOU)

You can buy ADKOT in vinyl from here
